15 Feb 04 - 08:23 AM (#1116297) Subject: Tech: Help - is this nasty email spam? From: JennyO I just got this nasty little email in my inbox. There was no attachment, and my antivirus didn't find anything. I typed in the links rather than click on them and got "page not found" but I did find a "federalpolice.com" which I suspect is not what it seems. I've googled around and checked hoax sites like snopes but I can't find anything that quite describes what I got. Has anyone else had emails like this, and does anyone know anything more about them? Hello... It has come to my attention that you are being under the police investigation. Is that true? Have you really commited such crimes? Please read the following article located at: http://federalpolice.com:article872@1075686747 or at: http://0100.035.0255.0133 Sincerely, Your old friend |

From: freda underhill Hi jenny I went to the site via the link: federalpolice.com:article872@1075686747 it went to http://federalpolice.com/ in the top right hand corner it had a link saying: To inquire about this domain, click here then there's an ad for the site, its for sale: MostWantedDomains.com This domain is for sale . Domain Purchase Inquiry Please submit the following form if you are interested in this domain name. A Worldwide Media Inc Company. All Rights Reserved. HAVE YOU REACHED OUR SITE FROM AN UNWANTED EMAIL ADVERTISEMENT? As purchasers of many previously owned websites and domain names, there have been instances where we have found a newly acquired domain name has used "spam" to advertise the old site. Mostly this was done by either the previous owner or someone simply trying to cause havoc on our new domain name. Please understand this is not us. We do not, nor ever will participate in this illegal activity. Both our company, as well as you the recipient of these unwanted advertisements, are the victims of this unethical practice. We take anyone using our company name or falsely representing a domain name we own very seriously. Even though we are not responsible for distributing these messages in any way, it is appreciated that anyone receiving a message linking to our site through an email advertisement reports it to us. Doing so not only makes us aware of what domains are being used in these emails, but also helps in our attempt to find out who IS responsible for this illegal activity enabling us to prosecute them. If you have received a "spam" message which links directly to our website, please click the "Next" link below and follow the instructions to submit it to us. PLEASE only submit email advertisements which you have found to link directly to our website as these are the only ones we can investigate. Submitting false pieces of "spam" which do not link to our site only adds to the problem, and exhausts our time which could be used to find the senders of the "spam". I've put all this in only to show you that while its linked to a lot of police sites, its not a real site, but a fake one for sale. so rest easy! fred |

It's not the Aussie Federal Police - they are at a .au address. And they is no need to worry about any other country for you and me. They are lying there heads off, IMO - they or an associate fairly clearly sent it to get you to look at the site, then get harvested. Doesn't matter if you click or retype the addres, they get you when you visit the site. Robin |

15 Feb 04 - 11:46 AM (#1116375) Subject: RE: Tech: Help - is this nasty email spam? From: Mr Red I have long suspected that viruses are harvesting e-mail names. Junk mail are obviously trying all sorts of ploys like returned mail that is in an attachment. As a domain owner I once got a returned mail from postmaster at cresby.com. Now why would I be e-mailing myself about an email (unspecified) that I couldn't deliver? But if it was not the fact that the pesky atachment was missing I would have fell for it. Norton had removed it, but Norton is notso clever as to tell you where the virus came from once it has quarranteened it. An oversight. The New Scientist has an article on how they can spot junk mail, just by checking if the purported sender is the same location as the source. So simple isn't it? In fact there will be a bit of software on all servers needed to make it happen but those that don't do it will be the focus of a lot of attention and policing I suspect. It will take time and effort though. It may take money - ours! |

15 Feb 04 - 01:11 PM (#1116413) Subject: RE: Tech: Help - is this nasty email spam? From: Peace Let's look at it as an exercise in grammar. If any Canadian cops wrote the message, they should sue their respective school boards for teaching them bugger all about the English language. "It has come to my attention that you are being under the police investigation." Rewrite as: It has come to my attention that you are under police investigation. "Is that true? Have you really commited such crimes?" Rewrite as: Is this true? Have you really committed such crimes? Jaysus, it would so please me if people who send this kinda s#it would learn some simple rules. |

16 Feb 04 - 08:01 AM (#1116887) Subject: RE: Tech: Help - is this nasty email spam? From: JennyO I think I was just born guilty like you Sandra. Of course its all my fault - everything that goes wrong, including the weather. Of course freda, Sandra is right about your shiny new email address. Just you wait! Actually, although I am getting some spam now, it is still nothing compared to the amount received by some other people I know, so I suspect I still have some way to go. From: GUEST,Mart > Please read the following article located at: > > http://federalpolice.com:article872@1075686747 The '@' is the suspicious part. There are many ways of representing web server addresses. The actual site you are going to is '1075686747', and *not* federalpolice.com (even if the address bar says 'http:/federalpolice.com' when you get there). This is a common trick. Once you're there it runs a bunch of java which I didn't examine too closely, but I expect that it's *baaad*. |
|
17 Feb 04 - 01:36 PM (#1117853) Subject: RE: Tech: Help - is this nasty email spam? From: GUEST,Mart I examined the java a little more. It does have a (mild) virus (trojan, whatever) in it, JAVA_BYTEVER.A, which exploits a flaw in the java VM on internet explorer and could potentially allow any code to be run but probably just changes a few explorer settings (like home page and search page). If your java VM is 3810 or later then the flaw is fixed and the code does nothing (run JView in a command window to get the version. It'll be something like 5.00.3810). A current virus checker should pick it up anyway. |
