15 Feb 04 - 03:58 PM (#1116494) Subject: BS: comet approaching From: open mike Spaceweather News for Feb. 15, 2004 Comet C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) is approaching Earth and brightening every day. It's not yet a naked-eye object, but the 7th-magnitude fuzzball is easy to see through backyard telescopes. The comet lies not far from brilliant Venus in the western sky after sunset. For the next three months, the comet will continue to brighten as it nears Earth. May 19th is the date of closest approach (0.27 AU). At that time C/2002 T7 might glow brighter than a 1st magnitude star--easily seen with the unaided eye. (Note: there is considerable uncertainty about how bright this object will become.) In May you'll have to be in the southern hemisphere to see it easily. Now is the best time for northern hemisphere observers to look, before the comet plunges south. 15 Feb 04 - 08:58 PM (#1116642) Subject: RE: BS: comet approaching From: Teresa This reminds me of a short short story by Isaac Asimov, about a meteor or comet approach. I'll paraphrase; don't have a copy of it.... As the object approaches Earth and it becomes certain it will strike, people begin saying goodbye. Mothers say farewell to their sons. Bosses say so long to their employees. Everyone waits, but nothing happens. So it is all much adieu about nothing. Before I beat a hasty retreat ... thanks, open mike. I'd be curious to know what people see up there. :) Teresa |

16 Feb 04 - 12:26 PM (#1117065) Subject: RE: BS: comet approaching From: Bee-dubya-ell Well, I don't think it's the least bit fair that it will only be visible from the Southern Hemisphere when it finally gets bright enough to see without a telescope. We Northern Hemispherites demand equal treatment! If you Ozzies will let us see the comet for a few days, we'll loan you The Big Dipper for a week in return. |

17 Feb 04 - 12:46 AM (#1117475) Subject: RE: BS: comet approaching From: LadyJean I was walking home carrying an impressively heavy box of computer paper, when I saw Halle Bopp in the sky. It was awesome. It inspired genuine awe. I stood with that heavy box and stared, and understood why people might believe something like that was divine. The suicides in California that followed the comet's appearance were tragic and dumb. But that thing was truly impressive. Perhaps there was something of the divine in it. |

But no, they paid little attention, and now Doom Will Be Upon Them and everyone else except me and those who plead with me for salvation from the cometS that are coming. |
