Sessions in NW Germany?

I am going to be studying in Bochum in north west Germany for a few months in April-July and was wondering if anyone knows of any music/sessions happening in that area? Nearby towns are Dusseldorf, Essen, Herne. I don't mind what kind of music, just anything that I can join in with (though I'm more of a tune player rather than a singer, but singing sessions are welcome too), as I will get withdrawal symptoms if I go for months without playing music regularly!

Cheers

Charley

Ask Letty, she lived in Bochum (IIRC) before she went to Cork...

Check out the local Irish Pubs and ask the locals when and where the next sessions are. I can't tell you too much, as I haven't gigged the IP scene in years. There used to be a couple in Bochum though. I think there was a Paddy Murphy's and a Buck Mulligan's. If you come down to Köln (about an hour's ride to the south) you can PM me. Have a good time.

Hi,

there's a session in Krefeld at the "Limerick's", also sessions in and around Bochum (just have a look at the "Coolibri" Magazine, you'll get it for free in nearly every pub), there is also a session at Hamm (can't remember when) and feel free to join us in the Steinenhaus in Solingen.

For more information about the Irish Folk Scene in Germany in that area you are invited to have a look at my website CantaLibre. If you post your question in the forum there will be a lot of answers with hints and announcements.

Kind regards

Sabine

....sorry, I forgot Wuppertal. Every second Saturday there is a session at "An Domhan"(not sure whether the spelling is right...)

I've been to Bochum many times and also needed the music (and common tongue) to survive. It's a pretty decent city for music. I can think of a few places where there might be sessions. There is definitely one at the Guinness Treff in Langendreer (suburb within Bochum)at least once a month on Sunday night (ask for Chris). Also try the the one Irish pub right in town near the Sudring (it used to be called Danny O'Brien's). There's another pub in the Daulhausen section of Bochum called the Irish Cottage...ask for Sven. There's a great pub in town called O'Neils. Jimmy behind the bar can tell you where more sessions are held. Jimmy's a character.
Essen, Dortmund, and especially Dusseldorf have a lot of Irish Pubs...again, ask Jimmy for advice.
Good luck.

Let's put it straight: "ttp is not a registered protocol."
Correct URL is http://www.cantalibre.de.
Too hasty, Andy, eh? One more fault and I'll write a poem again!

Wilfried, that must be a bug in the mudcat software!
It can't be my fault. Never!

Missed this one. Yes, I lived in Bochum for a couple of years, but I've never managed to find an open Irish session (maybe I wasn't looking hard enough), just concert-type sessions.
Sabine gave you some good tips, I've little to add.

If you're studying at the Ruhr-Universitat, you might want to check out the open mike nights and blues sessions in the Kulturkafe on campus: they happen at least once a month.
The Irish pub in Hattingen (Untermarkt) sometimes has Irish music. It's a pretty pub too, in a historical building. You can take an S-Bahn from Bochum straight to Hattingen.

Do check out Old Songs, New Songs (Bochumer Strasse): a terrific cd shop for folk and other 'unusual' music. They probably know about sessions too.

Liebe Gruesse,

Letty

Thanks for all corrections concerning CantaLibre *lol*
Think a lot of guests surfed in *ggg*

Letty, I think the session at Hattingen is down. I started to play there years ago and because I had to drive one hour I did my best to set up our own session here in Solingen.
I will ask some musicians next week if it's still in that tiny little old house but I think no. Somebody told me....not quite sure at the moment.
I will let you know if there's a session or not.

Freundliche Gruesse zurueck

Regards

Sabine
