19 Feb 04 - 10:01 AM (#1119124) Subject: Hamish H CD & Thug Oirinn Oro From: Abby Sale I just got a whole stack of new CDs from Camsco Records, including the wonderful Hamish Henderson Tribute CD. There's a review at: http://www.folkmusic.net/htmfiles/webrevs/cdtrax244.htm Many of his best pieces well-done by them that knew him & one or two I've not heard sung before. One of the best poems, "The Flyting o' Life and Death" I've only heard by me reciting it and it's a pleasure to hear Alison McMorland sing it. (I hadn't come across her before.) There's a Hamish tune for it in Arthur Argo's 'Hamish Songbook' but I think that's somewhat different. Maybe someone can advise one thing - there's the Gaelic song, "Thug Oirinn Oro" on the CD. I've never known of Hamish writing whole songs in Gaelic and it's not in his 'song book.' This one, spelt differently, was one of source/folk singer, Dolina MacLennan (of Lewis)'s favorites. I always thought she got it from home...she never said it was modern. Anyone know if this song is actually is Hamish's? Or have a translation of it? It's fine to hear Hamish, himself singing again... Great record. |
