Paul Mills/Ron Hynes - Congratulations

With all the justifibly joyous celebrating of Rick's new CD, we have overlooked a very important happening for a wonderful man. Lately in these precincts, we have celebrated and thanked Paul Mills for all he did to bring our buddy Rick Fieldings CD to fruition. But while he was doing this, a CD that he produced for Ron Hynes was vying for the venerable East Coast Music Award. For those that don't know what this is, it is an important Canadian award like the Grammy's in the States. And I am proud to announce that the Paul Mills produced/Ron Hynes CD "Get Back Change" won the FACTOR Album of the Year, and the Country Recording of the Year. Can you imagine keeping your concentration on Rick's event with this going on? One more important factoid for you. If you watched the video clip, and when you see the pictures that will soon be posted of the event, in the background you will see a woman with a wonderful smile working away at the computer. That is Linda, who is the Office Manager for Borealis. She got in at about 6:00 AM on Monday from the awards and stayed through the Fielding event to process the orders. What a crew, eh? No wonder Borealis wins these things.

Paul ...... my friend .... congratulations on the awards. Doesn't surprise me in the least. I am proud of you, for you, and to know you.

All the best,

Mick

Congratulations are certainly due. Wonderful Grand Album.

Just a slight clarification--the Canadian equivalent of the Grammies is the Junos (an award named after a bureaucrat, but for a very good reason--Pierre Juneau was responsible for the mandating that Canadian radio stations play 30% Canadian content, which led directly to the creation and development of a thriving homegrown Canadian music industry). The ECMA's are a regional showcase and awards ceremony, and celebrating as they do the best part of the country, are well known to be the best PARTY in the country. Which obviously Paul Mills was not at, being busy organizing Rick's bash and whatever. Double kudos to Paul for this huge sacrifice.

Big Mick,

The ECMA awards are not at all the Canadian equivalent of the Grammies. It's the Junos that are the Canadian version of the Grammies. The ECMAs are only for the provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick and Newfoundland. Taken together, those four provinces have a population about half the size of Toronto.

The ECMAs are more accurately compared to the WAMMIES is DC or the BAMMIES in Northern California.

Thanks for the corrections. But the point is no less poigniant. Paul is a wonderful Producer, and I wanted to thank him for his sacrifice on behalf of Rick, and congratulate him on the win.

Well, the Junos tend to reward more commercial artists and songs, very much the Canadian equivelant of the Grammy's. The East Coast is much more rooted in traditional music than the Junos. I am far more interested in their awards than the Junos.

Congratulations to Paul & Ron.

Award shows in general are mostly crap, and the Junos ranks high on that pile along with the Grammys. It is all about pandering to the recording industry executives, and trying to drum up support for the garbage that they produce. The ECMA's started out more as peer recognition, although they have gone somewhat downhill in recent years.
It is true that our population is small compared to Toronto but on a per capita basis our music rates as good or better than anything produced there.
Many artists value their ECMA higher than a Juno and I offer my congratulations to Paul and Ron!

Hi all...

Just discovered this thread and have to thank Mick for starting it! Yes, it was a thrill to win these ECMAs because, as stated by Obie, they tend to carry a bit more weight for us in the roots music nich especially when it comes to east coast artists. Even still, the major label boys tend to bring out their forces in the voting of these awards and the fact that Ron on a smallish independant label like Borealis won the big one is no small feat.

For this to happen the day before the Rick release was out of this world! What a magical couple of days in this wee folkie's life!!

Cheers,

Paul

Hello Folks,

I have to say a word or a couple thousand on this subject. In addition to his well deserved awards with Ron and preperation for Rick's release, I was in Paul's hair for the seven days leading up to it. I had a small bit of success on the East coast ten years ago. Potential to do more was there but my lack of industry experience and failure to follow my gut feelings lead to a bit of a disaster with my follow up project. I accept responsibility for that failure. In the process my self confidence was shattered and I walked away from something that was very important part of who I am.

I have been a a fan of Paul's work since I first heard Stan Rogers. I was very fortunate to have some of my material sent to Paul and was thrilled when he said he would like to work with me. Things progressed when we met and performed together at Stanfest a few years back. He made me feel comforatable from the instant I met him.

We'd talked about doing this CD since 1998. We finaly got together in 2001 for three and a half days and managed bedtracks for 8 tunes. That experience sold me on Paul's ability to get the very best out of every aspect of a song. The message, lyrics, melody, arrangment and performance. During the recent seven days we managed to complete all 15 tracks for the final product. I'd be ashamed to tell you how much actual studio time my previous projects amounted to. I am thrilled with this one to say the least.

Paul's contirbution goes far beyond what many envision a producer may be. His tremendous musicianship and the wonderful musicians he selected to be part of this project became an intrical part of the process. He allows all those involved to participate openly and he has a gift with his ability to channel all their input into the best possible result.

Hand in hand with his professional ability is the fantastic envrionment he and his beautiful wife Bev provide. They are a team in every sense of the word and are two of the finest people I've met. I had the greatest time with them. One only has to witness them openly show their love for their children and how it's returned to know they are salt of the earth people. I will treasure the time I spent with then forever.

I'm not finished, sorry! During the evenings we talked, picked some tunes and Paul shared some of the music he has written. When this Curly Boy guy releases it with him your gonna see just how far his talent extends. I'm still walking around singing one of them.

Paul introduced me to Rick's music, Jed Marum and many others during this project. I admire him, Bev and all of you here at Mudcat for the overwhelming love you've shown for Rick and I have faith it will provide peace in such a difficult situation. The love as displayed here is the foundation on which our prayers for Rick and his family may be answered.

Thank you Paul! Regards to Bev eh!
Thanks for being here Mudcat.

Jim

Yikes, this is embarassing!

Thanks, Jim. By the way, folks, stay tuned for songsmith's (Jim's) CD. It's fabulaous! Jim's a great songwriter from Nova Scotia and it was a pleasure working with him. We'll let you know when it's out.

Programming note - looks like Peter T and I will be co-hosting Acoustic Workshop tonight. While I'm at the station I'll see what's happening with the archive of last week's extraveganza.

Cheers,

Paul

Folks, can you see the common thread running through all the comments about Paul and Bev? First rate folks.

And two of my favorite folkies co-hosting "Acoustic Workshop"? Damn, but I have a gig tonight. Good luck, guys. Wish I could be there with you.

All the best,

Mick

And the worst part of not being there was that Paul missed seeing the other Paul (our new "beloved" Prime Minister!) who was at the Awards. I am sure that he was broken up about that.

Peter T.

Mick, yer not missing anything. CIUT appears to be back to normal. (In other words, they're having 'technical difficulties' and aren't netcasting.) I'm even more awestruck now that everything went right last week!

I've been a fan of Ron's music for some time. It's great to hear that the album has had such success. I wish the popularity of the great NE Canadian acts would trickle down over the border. I would have to travel at least 500 miles to see bands in this category.
There's an idea... a NE Canadian show touring the US!

Ron is a giant,in my opinion, with such a great body of work going back a quarter of a century that even most Canadians aren't aware of,I'm afraid.....no one writes a "dark" song,or sings it more effectively.......it appears that about two-thirds of "Get back Change" was released about eighteen months ago as an all-acoustic effort[done in a studio in Borden,P.E.I.      ...... they apparently re-mixed in Toronto, added some new songs and instrumentation....the first version is great on it's own ...hats off to Paul Mills and Borealis;best thing to happen in Canadian music for a long,long,time.....

Actually, Bernie, Ron's CD "Get Back Change" included a few of the songs on the PEI album, but they are all new recordings of these songs.

Good to hear from Wendy Grossman. Yes, I produced an LP (yes, vinyl) with her back in about 1980. It was a good 'un too!

As I said earlier, it was indeed an honour to work with Ron Hynes who is, in my opinion, one of the best singer-songwriters Canada has ever produced. For those who would like to get a copy of the recording, the best route would be to go to the Borealis Records' website at www.borealisrecords.com" They have secure online ordering.
