Just had a flashback to childhood as well

Pancake Tuesday's a very happy day
If you don't give us a holiday we'll all run away
Where will you run to?
Down Folly Lane.
I'll tell the teacher and you'll get the cane!

Folly Lane is a road that runs between Swinton and Eccles. It was once a very important highway when it was used by all the people in the Swinton area to get to Church in Eccles. that makes this localised but is anyone aware of any other localisations or chants of a sililar nature?

Cheers

What is Pancake Tuesday? Another version of Mardi Gras?

another one I remember is:

Shrove Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday
Jack's father to plough
He tried to make pancakes
But he didn't know how
He burned them and spoiled them
And made them so black
He stuck them on the table
And he said "Jack, eat that!"

I think there was more, but it was a long time ago and I find I am increasingly suffering from degenerative recollection impairment, otherwise known as aging.

Yep - Pancake Tuesday is our equivalent of Mardi Gras. Except that in Mardi Gras you get weeks of celebrating, music, drink and food. We get to eat greasy fried batter with sugar and lemon juice;-)

Shucks - so did I. The head cook was flying back from San Diego at the time, but I never thought of it. I'll have to shake her out of jetlag tonight to cope.

I had the chance - I remembered it - could have gone down to the local parish and had some - but my digestive system decided the yesterday I do nothing except sleep and sit on the porcelain throne.

I meant "Oh, man". Not "Oh, mah). Maybe my brain isn't working properly because I didn't have pancakes yesterday.

I didn't get any either. If I don't get them tonight Mrs. Johnny will know about it. Look out for the headline in tomorrow's 'Sun' - "Lincolnshire Pancake Rage Outbreak".

Gee, Carol, I thought it was just reflective of a newly adopted southern accent and you were saying, "Oh, my."

Not this year you can't - dates for Lent (which starts on Shrove Tuesday/Pancake Day/Mardi Gras) and Easter happen to coincide this year between the Western and the Eastern Churches. That's quite unusual. Here is a calendar of these feasts for the next few years.

Here in Detroit, we don't make much of a fuss about pancakes. The real treat is a tasty Polish delicacy call a Paczki.http://www.freep.com/news/metro/paczki24_20040224.htm

Hope the clicky works.

Take control! You may eat pancakes any day of the year. You may also put blueberries or sweet corn in them. Delicious! Don't wait for permission or tradition.

If you want pancakes, go to Pamela's in Pittsburgh. There's three of them, one on Walnut Street in Shadyside, one on Forbes Avenue in Squirrel Hill, and one on Forbes Avenue in Oakland. They've got the best pancakes anywhere. I believe they will serve them with strawberries and whipped cream. But I prefer the traditional maple syrup. (Lemon juice?)

shrove tuesday buns are yummy!
they have marzipan in the middle
and are served in a bowl of whipped cream...
maybe with some warm cream in the bottom..
i might have to fish out the recipe!

Don't be silly, you can't possibly eat pancakes except on Pancake Day! Next you'll be telling me you can eat hot cross buns when it isn't Good Friday! And anyway pancakes can only be eaten with lemon juice and sugar - trust me I know these things :0)

One I remember from my childhood in Belfast in the 50s was:
Pancake Tuesday is a holiday.
If we don't get off, we'll all run away.
Where shall we run?
Down the wee lane.
Who should we meet, but the teacher with the cane.
What shall we do?
We'll chop her up in two & leave her at the hospital at half past two! (? not totally clear in the memory department on the last half of the last line!)

-snip-

Since I had never heard of Pancake Tuesday before, I looked up information about it on Google, and found this interesting wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrove_Tuesday

Here's a couple of excerpts from that page:

"The reason that pancakes are associated with the day preceding Lent is that the 40 days of Lent form a period of liturgical fasting, during which only the plainest foodstuffs may be eaten. Therefore, rich ingredients such as eggs, milk, and sugar are disposed of immediately prior to the commencement of the fast. Pancakes and doughnuts were therefore an efficient way of using up these perishable goods, besides providing a minor celebratory feast prior to the fast itself."

-snip-

Pancake Races:
..."The most famous pancake race, at Olney in Buckinghamshire, has been held since 1445. The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line tossing the pancakes as they go. As the pancakes are thin, some skill is required to toss them successfully while running. The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times.

The tradition is said to have originated when a housewife from Olney was so busy making pancakes, that she forgot the time until she heard the church bells ringing for the service. She raced out of the house to church while still carrying her frying pan and pancake."

My thanks to GUEST,Chris McCann for writing the post that led to my learning something about Pancake Day. But I actually prefer waffles to pancakes. Is Waffle Day celebrated anywhere?

:o)
