Tech: Mac: cleaning up a furry old track

How do I clean up furry noises on an old John McCormack track on a CD, so I can hear it properly? Or can I?

(Using a Mac, with OS X - Panther - by the way.)

Does it sound furry in a CD player other than the computer's? If it is an old disc, a wash in soap and warm water might help. If it is a computer-only track not suited for playing on a CD player, you can clean the sound up digitally if the problem is int he file itself. There is one application called SoundSoap that does this for certain kinds of hum, crackle, and pop. Gneral bandpass filters can be applied with SoundStudio.

If the problem is with the physical medium and washing doesn't help, it may be tiny scratches in the CD surface. Dunno what to suggest for that.

or do you mean the track was PUT on the CD all "furry" ? In which case you are talking ripping the track and running the resulting file through filters to remove the hiss etc...

I think the fur came with the original recording. John McCormack sang his stuff mostly into ancient horn microphones, I think.

There are software programs that let you removed pop and hiss from recordings. I haven't used any yet, but I sure hope they work, when I get to that point in my organization of my Dad's old recordings!
