MarketRasenFolkClub has fallen through

Subject: MarketRasenFolkClub has fallen through
From: Rasener

I am very sorry to say that after negotiations with the Market Rasen Town Cricket and Association Football Club, I am unable to agree their charges. It is unfair to discuss the pro's and cons on an open forum such as this, so if you don't mind, I will not be revealing what went on.
So unfortunately the sessions in March will have to be cancelled as I don't think I can find a suitable venue in time.
I can only offer my profuse apologies and I hasten to say that there is nobody more upset about this than me.
I am not prepared to pay what they want, especially when all of you nice folkies have been so kind to me in offering your services and help.
I am doing this now, because I am very aware that the quicker you know about this, the better the possibilty of you picking up gigs for yourself elsewhere.
For all those lovely people who have offered their services, I will be getting in touch with you seperately.
It is too late tonight to talk with any of you, so I thought at least posting on here was better than nothing.
I will be looking further to see if I can find suitable accomodation and if I can, I will get back to you all and see what you think.
I will understand if you tell me to get lost.
A very dissapointed Les :-(

Bugger! Sorry pal. You can but do your best. Sometimes the powers that be cannot see the whole vision. Keep trying - you will get somewhere soon. Honest:-)

By and large I (when involved with clubs) have taken the view that if a landlord does not want the extra beer sales, and will not let us play free, I will go elsewhere.

Don't worry Les. These things happen. The club will with your enthusiasm, find a home soon. Cara's open-ended offer stands. Keep us posted and good luck.

David it does my heart good to hear you say that.

Richard that is basically what it boils down to and I agree. Unfortunately In doing that I have in fact let a lot of very good people down. That concerns me, but if everybody has David's attitude, then I will continue to find somebody as you say who will let people play free.

Sometimes you have to stick to your principles, and hope that you have done the right thing.

Sorry to hear it aint happening mate - Its a bit outside my patch for freebies but its always a shame when some one tries to get something started and gets stitched by the buggers who only see the bottom of the accounts page. Best of luck finding another venue.

Amen to that. But perhaps we should be positive and always stick to our principles? This may not always make us popular but if the people you feel you may have let down ARE good people - they should really understand.

Good luck

Bad news Les, it all seemed to be going so sweetly. Unfortunately this kind of thing does sometimes happen when you're dealing with people whose only God is money. Seems these guys are blinkered to the fact that a Folk-Club can fill a room with punters (and boost bar-takings, not to mention giving the place that elusive commodity so often lacking - ATMOSPHERE) on nights when it would otherwise be pretty well empty - I know of at least one other VERY successful club with a similar (although not identical) problem, i.e. with its roots in the tunnel-vision that afflicts the landlord of the premises they use.

Don't be downhearted, if you can find another venue I'm still enthusiastic and I'll be happy to support your venture.

Very best wishes fella.
JB

Cheers Johnny.
Your post is so so so close to the mark. That just about encapsulates what went on last night. They in actual fact moved the goalposts financially and I think that they thought they had me over a barrel, having already set everything up. I think they were very surprised when I got up and said stick your club up your jacksie. My only concern, was letting all you ggod folk down.
They saw the possibilty of making more money (greedy little *********************************************************). Sorry that part was a bit crude LOL.
I am going to look further, but I am not sure if I am going to find anything as suitable as my Ex Club.
Anyway its
hey ho, and off we go,
meat and drink and money have I none,
to find a suitable Fo-olk Clu-u-ub,
hey ho, and off we go.
Les

You have my respect Les, for your obvious resilience and strength of principle. Don't worry about 'letting (us) good folk down', it was you who was let down by those 'gentlemen' (I use the term very loosely!).

"And you to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
With smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
And like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again!"

Good luck mate.

Same as all the above. There ARE places out there who are happy to let folkies play for nothing, indeed, sandwiches are often given to the sessioneers, as a small incentive. After all, though drivers nowadays don't drink as often, I don't recall ever having been to a folk event on licensed premises that didn't have the landlord selling plenty of wallop.
My offer to sing etc stands. Good luck with your search.

Thanks everybody, and I hope to be back cross fingers soon.

Oh by the way Johnny, I have just spoken with Titch Rivett and like the rest of you will be supporting me if I get going again.

Likewise Bloke in the Corner, I will be sending MI5 out to find you once I get it going :-)
