Obit: Jack Shimer

Jack Shimer, long time CDS member and Pinewoods camp attendee, died Sunday, February 22, a few days after suffering a stroke. He was 90.

Jack and his wife, Joan Carr Shimer, moved recently to White River Junction, N.H. from their long-time home in Randolph, N.H. Jack was a geologist but his real interest was dancing. He was able to dance seven nights a week in Boston in 1941 to callers like Ralph Page who was then in his heyday. Joan was Pinewoods Camp Director and CDS Director for many years.

The last time Marnie and I visited them (January 24-25) Jack was still very sharp. He and I spent a few hours that Saturday looking at Internet sites featuring Hubble Telescope photographs and Mars Rover photographs – something he was very interested in.

Joan has been overwhelmed with phone calls. She would appreciate it if friends who want to contact her would write rather than call.

Is this the Jack who was married to Genevieve Vaughn-Jackson in earlier years? Genevieve was also a fine dance teacher in CDSS, and died some years ago.

(Thot I answered this last night, but must have exited instead of submitting...)

Yes, kytrad, that's the same Jack Shimer. He and Joan wintered here in Tucson a few years a while back. It was a pleasure to meet and dance with them both.

Kytrad,

Yes, Jack and Genny Shimer were married from 1947 until her death in 1990. As you say, Genny was a wonderful teacher and dancer. She and May Gadd ("Gay") and others taught dance at Duane Hall in NYC, at Pinewoods Camp and throughout the country.

Jack and Joan were married in November 1996. It was a joy for me to know Jack during both of these relationships.
