Subject: Windsor/Detroit Area Open Mic
From: Clinton Hammond

I know there are some few of us who ghost Mudcat (Some more often that others) so I wanna post this here to catch their eyes....

I'm now hosting an Open Mic @ The Kildare House , every monday evening from 8:30-12:30 (We'll go later if it's hoppin'!)

There are prizes to be won every week... 1st prize is a 50 buck gift certificate to Riverside Music (4769 Wyandotte East, Windsor)

2nd prize is a 20 buck gift certificate to The Kildare House

Winners determined by audience applause

At the end of the year (Dec 27th) all 1st and 2nd prize winners from the year will have their names in a draw to win 500 bucks!

So, bring a guitar... Bring a saxophone... Bring a kazoo... Bring 3 people to sing with you!
Play Folk... Play Blues...   Play Classic or Contemporary Rock... Play Originals! It's all good!

So Kildare House is located in "Walkerville" which is a neighborhood of Windsor, Ontario?

Hey, I'm pretty sure it's in the Milky Way Galaxy but before I warp in I'd like some reassurance.

What's the "inspection time" now for those trying to pass over the border, with or without musical instruments?

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Clinton, the wife and I are in the sunny south for the next month or so, but I'll sure try to make it down sometime in April. Sounds like a good time.

Charley,

It obviously varies from time to time, but for the most part there are very few delays at the border any more — especially coming into Canada. More likely to encounter a bit of bother going back to the U.S., tho' that hasn't been much of a problem lately either. On a Monday night I would be amazed if it takes more than 10 minutes coming in (and maybe only a couple of minutes). Going home, maybe 15 or 20 unless they're on really high alert.

As for bringing instruments, there should be no problem if you're not coming in to play for money. If you're just coming in to meet friends for some music, I doubt they would say much more than "have a good time." Just be sure you can name a couple of the friends and know the address of where you're going.

Cheers,

david

Obviously the next two weeks are tough on an Irish musician but anytime after that I am up for a mass descent of Mudcatters on the Kildare House. Even if we don't sing, we can heckle that red headed fella. We should all show up with our instruments, and then leave the lad hanging.............hahahahahaha. Clint, you sure you want to do this? DDW, Charley, give us some dates. It is about a 2 1/2 hour drive for me, but one I will be glad to make to sing with you all.

Mick

Since I only promised to not bring people who squawk or go gereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee on Sundays, I guess I'll tell them all about it. I know how much Clinton loves the sound of the great highland bagpipe.

What I would say crossing the border for my reason for going to Canada will not carry the same weight as my usual reason, particularly if anywhere near Mick, but, I too may be convinced to make an extra journey.

Monday should not be bad - Wednesdays, remarkably enough, are getting tough. No idea why.

On Crossing The Border...

Do NOT tell them you're coming over to play in public... tell them you are going to a chums house... for a few cocktails, and maybe a late dinner... If they think you're coming over to play in public, they'll want you to show a 'work' permit...

I can be PMed for my addy, and phone number to add creedence to your tale...

"We should all show up with our instruments, and then leave the lad hanging"

If you bring gear all this way and don't play, I might have to kick your ass BM! LOL

Mick — if you and Pete show up around the same time you'll have the Canadian border authorities on high alert; they'll think the Fenians are back for a second go....

I'll probably be going this Monday (March 8). I live just a few miles from Clinton and I'm sorta used to him, so I'm not scared any more.....

Hey Clinton,

What are the ground rules? Number of songs, length of time, lottery for who plays, etc.?

I sorta figured a bald-headed blues player might break up the march of red-headed Celtic players.....

cheers,

david

Subject: RE: Windsor/Detroit Area Open Mic

Ground rules?

I'll be taking down names of folks who want to play as they arrive, and putting them up in that order... I guess... I suppose trying to keep the 'gear heavy' folks till last might be a good idea...

Length of time/Number of songs? Well, if it's just you and me, I'll leave ya up there all night if I can! LOL I'm gonna try to get a feel for it as it happens...

Celtic Players? You might find that most people coming out do more originals and classic rock than anything else... That's sorta typical for Open Mics around here....

That's why I sent email to the Windsor Folk club to let them know... not that I've heard anything back from them... But it'd be nice to have some talent through to break up the Beatles and Cat Stevens covers... (yawn!)

Clinton,

I'm gonna drop in at another open mic tonight at The Mill. Quite a few of the WFS people have been there the past few weeks, so I'll let them know about this. As for the WFS people not getting back to you — we haven't had any kind of get-together when we could spread the word. I'll make a point of bringing it up at the next executive meeting and/or the coffee house this coming Friday.

Cheers,

OK, folks. Maybe I'm showing myself to be an utter fool for doing this, but I'm gonna shoot myself in the foot and tell you something. This open mic is the only one I've ever heard of that offers prizes every week and I'm happy as hell to have won two of them.

Well, I won one. The other I got because nobody else showed up. I half-jokingly told Clinton I was gonna ride this gravy train to a new 12-string I want, and if you other jokers don't come out to make things interesting, I'll continue to do just that. I've got $100 toward it so far and I'm sure as hell not too proud to keep on.

The long and short of it is — Clinton is running an open mic and I'd go out to support him, even if there weren't any prizes involved. But since there are, I think I'd be a fool not to go every time I can. The worst that can happen is that I get to do a few tunes and hear music and performers I've never heard before. The best of it is that I get to do a few tunes and hear music and performers I've never heard before and win a prize to boot.

Can't beat that!

Hope to see some more faces Monday night.

cheers,

david

Darn! This post appeared while I was visiting family in the Chicago & Detroit areas & had limited net access; if I'd known about it I'd have made a point of getting over to have a go & meet Clinton & any other 'catters.

Ah well... will bookmark this thread & hope it's still running the next time I get back to the states.

Clinton, I'm *amazed* that an open mic is offering that kind of money -- & every week, no less! How can they afford to do it? (Especially if the crowds remain small!)

When I lived in the Detroit area (not far from you, Cool Beans -- in Southfield), I belonged to the Paint Creek Folklore Society. I bet a fair number of Paint Creekers would be interested in this -- I'll send this info along to their newsletter editor, shall I?

Cheers,

YY

We had 3 goofy young guys clustered around one guitar and one mic a few weeks back...   Forgetting lyrics, cracking each other up, and just generally having WAY too much fun...

I had ta give 'em first place!

LOL

"How can they afford to do it?"

Afford to? It's 170 bucks every Monday... belive me, if it was scraping the profit margin, it'd be GONE in a flash! The Kildare has entertainment (paid for) every Thursday to Monday... And now that summer has landed, their business is only gonna get busier!

As it stands, I'll probably be able to make it next Monday night (Apr. 26) as well. I'm disappointed you can't make it this week, but I realize it was pretty short notice. I was out of town for a couple of weeks and had way too much landscaping and not enough music. I'm looking forward to tonight.

And so another of Lane's Looney Rambles comes to an end. These things started with an 11 roundtrip drive for a 3 hour visit to Rick some years ago. They were taken to the next level with the advent of the "drive 13 hours each way" through the dead of the night to get to the FSGW Getaway and then operate on 6 hours sleep through the weekend. Last night I left home shortly after 7:00 PM and drove 3 hours to Windsor to attend the singalong with Clinton, maire-ann, Devilmaster, Cool Beans, and ddw. Heard some mighty singing and playing at the Kildare House, sat and had the odd jar with Clinton, Devilmaster and some of the regulars, left shortly after 2:00 AM and drove home (which took 3 1/2 hours) and got home in time to get my daughter off to school.

If you can, get to one of Clinton's performances or his open mike. In either case, you will be glad you did. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, with this wonderful bunch.

I don't want to whine, but I will anyway. Did anybody else think that the card-players were beyond rude? I expect people will carry on conversations while I sing. It's a bar, afterall. But I thought YELLING was too much. I really wanted to just stop in the middle of the song, and smack 'em. There, I feel better.

I couldn't agree more, but believe it or not they were well-behaved last night, compared with how they've been other nights. They've been a pain in the ass for as long as I've been going there and it never seems to occur to them — particularly the jerk with the muscle shirt and shaved head, who makes about 80 percent of the noise — that it might be better if they played in another room.

Clinton throws what barbs he can, but they seem impervious to all of them and, short of asking the management to intervene, I don't know what can be done. Maybe Marty's suggestion is best — get there early and take all the seats....

cheers,

david

Oh. I didn't know that. The only other time I was there, the big guy wasn't. It was just the two young guys, and the were very nice when they were by themselves.

Hmmm.

It's "Vin" who is the problem, and the other two (who stayed after he left) are chums of mine, who I will be having a talk with... To tell 'em that if they do bring him out, to please take him to a different room... preferably in a different bar... in a different time zone....

Pics should be coming soon... later tonight, or more likely tomorrow...

Thanks for ALL who came out! It was a blast and a half!

So... don't keep us in suspense... did our Catters waltz off with 1st & 2nd place? (And if so, which ones?)

The two prizes, as a reminder, were a fifty dollar gift certificate to Riverside Music in Windsor, and a 20 dollar gift certificate to the Kildare House.

Although all were good, the two winners were, a local guy who is a good picker and who really sounds like Chris Deburgh. (yes the lady in red singer), and the other winner was Mudcat's own Big Mick Lane.

FYI.. The Big guy, and his little toadie, who were making all the noise have been told that if they are gonna come out, they are to sit in another room... preferable in another pub...

They shant be an issue any more!

Also as DDW was the only one to come out last week, he won again... and in discussion with the owners, the more often you win, the more often your name goes into the ballet-box for the 500 bucks at the end of they year... so come on out folks... make David at least WORK for his new 12 string!

LOL

One of these days, when I dig out from under, I might put in a return appearance meself. Sounds like I'll actually be able to hear all of you this time, which would be a treat.

"actually be able to hear all of you"

Well, it is first and foremost a pub, so most people are there to talk, drink, play cards, throw darts... And when we're lucky, some even come for the music...

Those are the BEST nights!

Cool B — actually this week wasn't too bad. There were two tables of card players in the room, but for the most part they were attentive (or at least quiet). And once I got thru there were some good musicians there, too.

Love to see you back. Anybody who can give me the first line of a Pink Anderson tune is all right with me.....

cheers,

david

Alright... now I've left you folks alone with this for too long...

Just look at what you've done by NOT coming out... Last week DDW showed up with the brand new (for him) 12 String he got with Gift certificates won at MY Open Mic! And to thing YOU coulda had a piece of that action...

It is a sweet piece of axe... and I tend to not like 12 strings much...

So come on out folks! Casue we're having fun without ya's... but it'd be better if you were there too!

:-)

Well, thanks folks! Those of you who cam e out at least...

Unfortunately, the Kildare House has pulled the plug on the Open Mic, due to lack of audience interest coupled with a loss of sponsorship.... (The Kildare House has also temporarily cancelled it's Thursday and Sunday entertainment... Tough times all round eh)

So, well, all good things eh...

To everyone who came out at any time, ta very much!

With any luck when things pick up around the K House again, we'll take another stab at the open mic thing

See ya's down the road

Very sorry to hear it. I was really looking forward to attending (and singing!) when I came "home" for the holidays. And maybe meeting some Michigan/Ontario Mudcatters to boot. Ah, well... If they have anything going in late Dec/early Jan, please do let me know!

This really disappoints me. I made over once, and was going to stop the Monday after Rick's Memorial, but the friggin' heart attack got in the way. Clinton ran a great night, and I was very much looking forward to stopping in again.

Clinton, keep me posted if this starts again, I want to get over and do a little more music.

All the best,

Mick

Very kind of you Clinton. Sounds good – I'll stay in touch. If I'm lucky, maybe Big Mick & a few other Mudcatters will be able to get there as well (fingers crossed for luck...)

Sorry to hear that, Clinton. I don't think I've been to any open mics all summer-- hardly even picked up the guitar it seems.

YY and all, check in to CH's website for info on his gigs. He's pretty good about keeping it up to date. Just let us know if you're going to be in the area, and we can find a place to get together.

I've just reached the end of my stint in Detroit (2.5 weeks). Took in some music with DDW (thanks for everything and then some, David!) but didn't make Kildare House - sorry Clinton. I wanted to come over this last Monday and see people, but travelling that far on a school night (especially given the workload I've had, and having to be in at 8am) kind of ruled it out. Ho hum. Real shame that entertainment there is winding down - last time I was there (a couple of years back now :-) Clinton did a seriously good gig.

Don't know when I'll next be over (the reason for coming across was for project handover and closedown, so I won't be back to Ford soon), but rest assured I'll give you a shout when I next get over that way.

Graham.

PS. Congratulations, Clinton - hope life treats you both well!
