05 Mar 04 - 07:26 AM (#1129687) Subject: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Sandra in Sydney Well, OzCatters it's almost that time of the year again. Time to gather songs, instruments, family, friends, woolly clothes, camping gear & head for our nation's capital in autumn, which as we all know can get bloody cold, even freezing some nights. But the days are normally warm & the music is great, too. So who will be there - the Sydney push will include me, JennyO, JennieG, freda underhill, Bob Bolton, Callie2, Chicky, Chris Maltby And we can meet up with Hrothgar, Joybell & her True Love, Canberra Chris, & all the rest. Last year Bob made badges & I'm sure he can throw toghther a few more for those who don't have them. Some of us even have Mudcat t-shirts to wear, too! So add yourself to the list, then all we gotta sort out is WHERE & WHEN. Any overseas Catters planning to join us? bye for now sandra |

14 Mar 04 - 05:32 PM (#1136367) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Canberra Chris Yes, I'll be there of course. Sorry, been off air a bit, lead up to Easter just happens to be the nightmare work season for me. I've got Bob's badge somewhere, now where did I ... Shiny Bums didn't get up for the National this year, despite a great proposal, that included linking up with Victorian shiny bums Enda Kenny, Bruce Watson et al for a 'Chili Con Carnage' concert to include a re-write of 'South of the Border, on flexi-time pay', in a finale backed by the brass section of the Great Southern Band. Oh, and the creation of the Tiny Shiny Bums in the Kids Tent. Oh well, maybe its time for a National Folk Festival Fringe to emerge. How about the Phoenix Festival, for acts to rise again (appropriate for Easter) from the ashes of the unfathomable single brain NFF selection process. Meanwhile maybe real life is taking over where staged events leave off. This weekend was the 30th Wedding Anniversary of Shiny Bums Pat and Arminel Ryan, who returned with assembled company to the bush hut in the Brindabella hills where they had their original wedding reception. It was actually meant for last year, but plans were interrupted by the 2003 firestorm. Miraculously the hut itself survived, though everything burnt up to its walls. We had bush dancing and an impromptu concert round the campfire. The plaque ironically also survived "The pine trees that beautify this picnic spot were planted by ..." Chris |

14 Mar 04 - 09:38 PM (#1136528) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: JennyO We could call it the "Mary Ellen Carter" festival cos we are rising again. Enda could sing it to kick the thing off. Honestly I don't know what goes on in the minds of those people. Your collaboration would have been a huge hit, but they don't seem to see that - too busy being politically correct and whatever else determines their thinking. Have they never seen one of your concerts with the audiences packed to the rafters? Nah, probably couldn't get in. See ya there, Chris. |
15 Mar 04 - 07:04 AM (#1136811) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Sandra in Sydney maybe we could have a Salon de Refuses ('scuse my deplorable French, but it's almost 4 decades since I studied French) The Bums, the 40's, Enda, Bruce, the mob from Traynors, the NTites, the WAites, the unaccompanied singers ... & not forgetting all the acts from Victoria, the Featured State! One of my interstate friends will not be there for 2 reasons - lack of interest in many of the booked acts & his claim to be too old for camping in the Canberra climate! But as I said to him, I'll have fun with friends even if I don't go to concerts/wrkshops all day & night long. see ya there sandra |
15 Mar 04 - 06:00 PM (#1137441) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Joybell I got a refusal. Can I join the club Sandra? True-love did get in but not with me. We got in last year so I'm not really complaining. Now that we are out of sinc we probably won't get in again for a few years at least. I offered a theme concert called, "Victorian in Time and Place". Songs from the 19th century as sung in Victoria. Hoped it might have a good chance for Victoria's year. Anyway I'll be there and am looking forward to the whole thing. Joy |
15 Mar 04 - 11:40 PM (#1137662) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: GUEST Someone wanted a report on Port Fairy - but I can't give that. I was at the Blue Mountains festival last weekend and Eliza Carthy and her lads were there with plenty more. It was a taste of Canberra weather too - nice scotch mist - jumpers and (shock) long trousers desirable... I saw Eliza once (she was only there on Sunday for 2 gigs), The Fagans 3 times and Kate Fagan (with help from James) once. Lots of good mountains people and a bit more blues this year. Lynne and Greg Hudson are doing 3 house concerts at Lawson to catch some of the big names drifting past this year - Jez Lowe, James Keelahan and Martin W-R (I don't have the leaflet handy but I can supply details). All supported by the Blue Mts Union Choir. All I have to do is get council elections out of the way and then I can think about the National... |

I know there is actually an opening concert that night, but I'd still prefer the pub - plenty of time later to catch up on all the action of the festival. So who else can be there on the Thursday night? Jenny |
19 Mar 04 - 07:13 AM (#1140781) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: JennieG I can be there on Thursday night, it was fun last year. I seem to remember a rousing rendition of "Oh Sir Roger do not touch me" much to the amusement of the local drinkers! I don't think that will be on the menu at Sunday's hymn session. Cheers JennieG |

From: rich-joy sorry Sandra, but Stewie's free-of-charge production (also drawing on a dozen "no-charge" performers from the NT, WA, SA and Qld : no mean feat in itself!), was one of those that didn't get a guernsey from Mr McDonald ... Too bad, coz that Paul Stewart KNOWS STUFF and his many earlier Festival "workshops" (or "themed presentations" as he now calls them) are famous Oz-wide, in the pre-Canberra Folk Scene ... 13 Apr 04 - 05:03 AM (#1160554) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Sandra in Sydney some of us are back! I have 8 new CDs & met almost as many Mudcatters (including Bob Zentz, whose CD I had bought before I was told he was a Mudcatter) Lots of great singing, good company, great musical offerings, all accompanied by a tiny sniffle, fortunately not the famous Canberra throat, so I could still sing along in all the singing sessions. Some well-known unaccomanied singers (not Mudcatters, I hasten to add) were very much the worse for wear after early mornings singing & drinking Guinness. We had a great Shanty session with Danny Spooner, a very enthusiastic hymn singing session, under the inspired direction of Hrothgar, & singing sessions every night up to at least 2am. Us water drinkers woke up feeling very well even after a few hours sleep, tho a certain Mudcatter tried to choke on Drambuie, causing consternation among the assembled singing session. That'll larn you to buy & offer around fiery liquor, stick to the usual pink stuff as lemon, lime & bitters doesn't catch in your throat! Hurry up next festival sandra |

13 Apr 04 - 09:28 AM (#1160710) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: Sandra in Sydney MCFat & Bob - I think it's ScuttleBob. I remember him saying he tacks Bob on the name of a group he in (or was in), so I just spent minutes searching all around Mudcat & google, then I tried the list of members that appears when I try to send a PM. As he doesn't often access Mudcat due to travelling, (tho might soon as he is heading for NZ next week), best way of contacting him would be email. Search the forum under his real name & one of the threads near the top of the list gives his email address, or better still do a google search & get his web address. sandra |
13 Apr 04 - 10:27 AM (#1160772) Subject: RE: Ozcatters meet @ the National @ Easter? From: JennyO My only complaint is that most of the Drambuie was gone by the time I got there and I only got a taste. Bob Zentz and Rick Lee were lovely fellas - we got a lot of their CD's. Bob told me he had posted under the name of Scuttlebob, but he may not have actually been a member. I intend to do a search. Met Joybell for the first time - there she was up on stage with her big Mudcat badge on for all to see. The weather was particularly good for Canberra at this time of year - mostly warm days and cool to cold nights, but not really freezing like it has been sometimes. There was a little bit of rain one day, but not enough to be too worried about. We had a good camping spot just across the road from the session bar - there was always music to go to sleep by, even if it was 4 in the morning, which it was most times for me. New discoveries for me performance-wise, apart from the aforementioned Bob and Rick, were The Spooky Mens Chorus and Bob Brozman. Jennie G is still there and will be for a few more days - half her luck! Now it's back to real life and dealing with the idiots who installed a reconditioned alternator in my car a few weeks ago, and forgot to bolt it in properly *&^%#+X>*#@+*!!!!! |
