Hi guys

Does anyone have the tune for the slow march the "old grenadier"? I know Brass Monkey recorded it but I cant just work it out.

Any help will be gratefully recieved.

Also does anyone know if there is a resource for these old military tunes which were often country dances?

I was looking for the music for this a few years ago. I tried calling the Army Music School at Kneller Hall but they suggested I try the Grenadiers themselves. I finally spoke to a very helpful lady in their music library (yes, they have a music library) and asked about the Grenadier's slow march. 'You mean Scipio?' She asked me. I know 'Scipio' because my father-in-law did his National Service in the Grenadiers. 'No', I said, 'it's not that one.' 'So how does it go'? So I hummed it down the phone. 'Oh, you mean "Grenadier's Return".

So that's it. The names is 'Grenadier's Return' and if you don't believe me take it up with the Grenadiers. I think they're all in Afghanistan at the moment though so you might have to wait.

A few years earlier my wife was looking for a regimental cravat for her dad. She phoned up and ended up speaking to an impossibly posh officer who said he'd send her one. She asked how much. 'Oh, nonsense', he replied, 'chap needs a cravat, chap needs a cravat'.

Grenadiers. Can't beat 'em.

Friend of mine who was a colour-sergeant in the Coldstream thinks you can!

And here is a man playing the march on a Jeffries anglo ~~

Nice one Michael!

I'm reminded of another story. My wife took my brother's step-daughter from Belgium to Windsor for the day some years ago. They were changing the guard at the Castle. The Welsh Guards were on public duties at the time. My wife was explaining how you could tell the difference between the various Guards' regiments by the spacing of their buttons, the various insignia (leeks for the taffs, little bombs for the grenadiers) and so on.

They didn't notice that the big taff colour sergeant had been listening to them until he turned around and said to the missus: 'You know a lot about soldiers...'

I'd always suspected as much.

BTW ~~ bit of drift, & following Chris's tale of his wife. I asked this friend, the ex-colour-sergeant, why it was that the Grenadiers wore white bearskin-plumes but red bands on their parade-caps, while the Coldstream wore red plumes but white bands. He said, good question, lot of people had asked that...

Does your wife know, Chris?

Hi Michael.

I'll ask. If the missus doesn't know her dad might. Did your mate not know?

Chris

Not only are the plumes different colours, they wear them on different sides of their bearskins.
