It may have the old England version, but just change England to Ireland(or Iceland if you prefer!). |
05 Mar 04 - 07:20 PM (#1130122) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling home to Ireland , Help Skarpi Ic From: Malcolm Douglas It's a different song; a fairly modern one, I take it, written in a sort of Clancey Brothers style. I'm fairly sure I've come across a completely illegal mp3 on some Canadian website quite recently. |

06 Mar 04 - 07:21 PM (#1130592) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rolling home to Ireland , Help Skarpi Ic From: Malcolm Douglas I've already said that the song Skarpi is looking for is NOT a variant of Rolling Home to Dear Old England. Of course the "Irish Rovers" may have recorded one of those as well for all I know, but their Rolling Home to Ireland is a completely different song. I don't make such comments idly, but mainly to avoid people wasting their time and everybody else's by making helpful suggestions which have nothing at all to do with the question asked. You can hear audio of the "Irish Rovers" song at Harry S. Anchan's Favourite Scottish and Irish Songs It is easily found via Google. I can't say that I much care for it, but I'm sure that it goes down very well with the "singalong" kind of audience. |

The other words I posted, by Makem, did not match any of the "Rolling Home" ones in the DT. Thanks for the link to the Irish Rovers' one. |

One of the locals listened for a second, turned to me and said "They're singing Kevin Barry - in GERMAN! Fair play!". Regards |

10 Feb 14 - 04:24 PM (#3600173) Subject: Lyr Add: ROLLING HOME TO IRELAND (Irish Rovers) From: skarpi Here it is ..the lyric .. ROLLING HOME TO IRELAND As sung by The Irish Rovers I come from Paddy's land I'm a rake and ramblin' man Since I was young, I've had the urge to roam So don't you weep for me When I'm sailing on the sea For you won't see me till I come rolling home Rolling home to Ireland, rolling home across the sea Back to me own con-ter-ree (country) Two thousand miles behind us and a thousand more to go So fill the sails and blow winds blow! We sailed away from Cork We were headed for New York I'd always dreamed the sailor's life for me But the days were hard and long With no women, wine, or song And it wasn't quite the fun I'd thought 'twould be Rolling home to Ireland, rolling home across the sea Back to me own con-ter-ree (country) Two thousand miles behind us and a thousand more to go So fill the sails and blow winds blow! We weren't too long a-sail When the wind became a gale Our boat was tossed and turned upon the foam With waves like moutains high Well I thought that I would die I wished to God that I was rolling home Rolling home to Ireland, rolling home across the sea Back to me own con-ter-ree (country) Two thousand miles behind us and a thousand more to go So fill the sails and blow winds blow! And when I reach the shore I will go to sea no more There's more to life than sailing 'round the Horn Good luck to sailor men When they're headed out again I wish them all safe harbor from the storm Rolling home to Ireland, rolling home across the sea Back to me own con-ter-ree (country) Two thousand miles behind us and a thousand more to go So fill the sails and blow winds blow! Rolling home to Ireland, rolling home across the sea Back to me own con-ter-ree (country) Two thousand miles behind us and a thousand more to go So fill the sails and blow winds blow! 29 Jun 22 - 12:27 AM (#4145810) Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Rolling Home to Ireland From: Joe Offer I had the feeling it was composed, not traditional. allmusic.com says the song was composed by George Millar and released in 2002. Here's a recording by the Irish Rovers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sm7uuDvfCOM |
