06 Mar 04 - 11:11 PM (#1130682) Subject: BS: Up and Coming From: flattop Who are the rising stars in your area? Down here in Cape Breton, up the Cabot Trail over Smokey, around Ingonish, they say that Norman MacDonald could be the next Buddy MacDonald. Norman drives an ambulance up there and sings. Last I heard, Buddy lived down the bottom of the Cabot Trail in Englishtown. Englishtown has a little fairy that you wouldn't want to marry even if Bush gave his blessings. Only cars ride the Englishtown fairy. Me thinks Norman would have to drink a lot more to be the next Buddy. Half of the songs on Buddy's CD that I bought were about drinking or being drunk. |

Lots of folks way too serious or I've already written on the subject 53 times in the past. Now I know Viagra is worn out as well, but a cheap shot is such a nice feeling.................And look at what Mets said! Yeah, the real trash just ain't what it used to be but tonite I found a couple and it made me feel good. Spaw |

07 Mar 04 - 10:10 AM (#1130847) Subject: RE: BS: Up and Coming From: flattop I appreciate your contributions spaw. With our limp Canadian dollar we can't afford Viagra. So all we can get up at your age is our memories. The last time I saw Norman he was singing in the North Bay Legion, just north of beautiful Ingonish Beach. You could hear the waves on the rocks behind the Legion in the moonlight. The crowd was loud and appreciative, banging their beer bottles on the table for more at the end of the night. I think they were mostly Norman's relaties but from what I heard on the Whitty Shore "When you go so far north, they all have the same father." Correction, that was the second last time I heard Norman. The last time, he was playing for tourists on the patio of a restaurant/ bar/motel in Baddeck, at the the 5 corners, across from the kiosk. I don't remember the name of the restaurant. As we left, Charlie H. drove up with a bunch of old women. We'd met Charlie at a garage sale on another part of the island the day before. Charlie seemed to be having a gay ole time. You know, my cousin Clarence drove up to the tip of Cape Breton one day - before he got the job in the Highlands National Park and wrote his book on the park. One chap said to him, "We off the end of 'er 'ere boy." |

07 Mar 04 - 08:36 PM (#1131301) Subject: RE: BS: Up and Coming From: flattop Cluin Buddy MacDonald is a local Cape Breton star. He's probably on the Celtic Colors site - I saw a thread above. I first hear Buddy singing on the radio about drinking too much rum while driving from Ross's Ferry to Baddeck. The ferry went out of service years ago after they build the Seal Island Bridge, so was he either writing historically or drinking enormous quantities of rum. I bought his CD looking for the rum song, he probably has several now, and it was full of drinking songs. The title song was about it getting Dark Again for the third time since he got to the party. I'm not sure if you are refering to your above question being a mixed metaphor or my above question being a mixed metaphor. I trust that you and Amos aren't Mudpolice. I figured, perhaps mistakenly, that BS came from the latin for bruxo scribo or bollixi sostenuto or bloto soberis, blowzi supine, babblo sexulis, or something like that. I had hoped that if I wrote an open message in a friendly tone, any mudcatter with the urge would feel free to respond. I was glad to see that most creative and euridite man in Ohio, eruditus ohious, respond. If he failed to mention who is up and coming in Ohio it is probably because he is so busy banging his dolcimer. cheers, fla |

11 Mar 04 - 09:06 PM (#1134351) Subject: RE: BS: Up and Coming From: flattop You are welcome Cluin. A couple of days ago a friend asked me if I would drive him and others to a Ceilidh in Big Pond, out Rita MacNeil's way, around the end of the month. He said that Buddy MacDonald was singing. I knew it was scheduled but thought it was about 12 fiddlers and their accompanists. I had been reluctant to go because I believe thousands of Cape Bretoners have OD on fiddle music. (It's not really Oxycontin.) Still reluctant to go but I checked the ad. Turns out it isn't Buddy MacDonald, or Buddy MacMaster, or Norman MacDonald on the bill but Howie MacDonald. Howie is a fabulous fiddler - plays sweet melodical, tunes, with loose rhythm, not the stiff scratch-scratch-scratch like some of them playing traditional. You might have seen Howie if ya saw the Rankin's perform live. Another fiddler on the bill, Dwayne Cote, plays with a bright whimsical touch. He does amazing stuff. They called him back for several encores at the big Robbie Burns concert in Sydney Mines this year. One of the organizers of the Robbie Burns concert was mother of the Barra MacNeils, so there were plenty of fiddlers. Cote stole the show. Maybe this Big Pond Ceilidh ain't such a bad idea. |
