I turned 50 a few months ago, is it inevitable that my singing will become weaker as I grow older? Should I be gargling with cider vinegar? Any vocal teachers out there? |

On the other hand, Pavarotti is a lot older than you & still singing professionally pushing 70. If you're an untrained singer, finding a good singing teacher really will help preserve your voice. I'm 57 and I reckon my voice is getting better - more volume and a deeper, more 'mature' sound. The only thing I find is going a little is control - can't do the triplets and other twiddly bits as well as I used to but, overall, I like what I hear. I would have thought 50 was a bit young for the voice to start going off? Any others with a view/experience? |

It won't get stronger by virtue of age, though. Ultimately, even with professional know-how, control & volume will weaken. Professionals are professionals for a reason. Not all of their techniques will be applicable (you ain't trying to sing opera, for a start!). Nevertheless, they have many good practices (& many good practice routines) that will help preserve the voice. They're offering the distilled wisdom of many centuries remember... ;) |

I'm happy to say that I have a strong, clear voice, with good pitch control, as I've always had. Last year I decided I could use some voice instruction. I knew I didn't want to do opera-style stuff, and didn't want my voice, diction, and delivery to get "tainted" with the habits that classical singers work so hard to assimilate. I found a teacher who sings folk and similar songs, and studied with her for about six months. As a result, I have better control of my high range, much better understanding of singing diction, and better breath control. It was money and time well spent. Powerful and perfectly pitched - magic! And his memory's a lot better tahn mine too (that's summat else that deteriorates with age!). My genius surgeon in Boston wants me to come back so he can have a look. This man has several patients such as Pavaroti and Julie Andrews. If there is a grain of hope I will go to Boston even if it is just a visit with DR,Steven Zeitels. He's world famous. |

26 Mar 18 - 04:46 AM (#3913172) Subject: RE: Deteriorating voice From: Jim Carroll I stopped singing for may years and found when I started again (fairly recently) that my throat became sore if I sang for any length of time and my range had reduced In the 60s/70s I had been taught a series of voice exercises (basically 4 vowel-like sounds and a number of short singing exercises) so I started on them Coupled with relaxations, I find I can sing as well as I ever did - probably better Now, in my 70s I have little problems in singing whatever I choose Exercise and avoiding strain does the trick Jim Carroll |

Seriously, I'm still singing strongly and enjoying it more than ever. Folks who have known me for these many years say that my voice is not only as strong as ever, but is even more mellow and pleasurable. I'm 74 this year and, through constant use, still have a reasonably strong and resonant voice - if a shade lower in pitch than when I was young. My heart goes out to those folks for whom that facility has meant so much and who have lost it. |
