Deteriorating voice

Help! My voice seems to be loosing its brightness ... I turned 50 a few months ago, is it inevitable that my singing will become weaker as I grow older? Should I be gargling with cider vinegar? Any vocal teachers out there?

Yes, your voice will grow weaker. On the other hand, Pavarotti is a lot older than you & still singing professionally pushing 70. If you're an untrained singer, finding a good singing teacher really will help preserve your voice. Go for it!

Is it inevitable? I'm 57 and I reckon my voice is getting better - more volume and a deeper, more 'mature' sound. The only thing I find is going a little is control - can't do the triplets and other twiddly bits as well as I used to but, overall, I like what I hear. I would have thought 50 was a bit young for the voice to start going off? Any others with a view/experience?

I dissagree that it's necessarily going to weaken. At 66, I think, my voice is not only more well rounded and fuller in tone, but it is also much stronger. Maybe it comes from all my years of eating sawdust ... I 'dunno! CHEERS, Bob

P.S. I think I need to add ... your voice is just like other body parts. Use it lose it! (hee hee)

Bob & Johnny - Your voice will change, certainly (Hey! I'm only... errrrmmmm... 30-summik...). It won't get stronger by virtue of age, though. Ultimately, even with professional know-how, control & volume will weaken. Professionals are professionals for a reason. Not all of their techniques will be applicable (you ain't trying to sing opera, for a start!). Nevertheless, they have many good practices (& many good practice routines) that will help preserve the voice.

They're offering the distilled wisdom of many centuries remember... ;)

I am 74 now, and singing strong(ly). I'm happy to say that I have a strong, clear voice, with good pitch control, as I've always had.

Last year I decided I could use some voice instruction. I knew I didn't want to do opera-style stuff, and didn't want my voice, diction, and delivery to get "tainted" with the habits that classical singers work so hard to assimilate. I found a teacher who sings folk and similar songs, and studied with her for about six months.

As a result, I have better control of my high range, much better understanding of singing diction, and better breath control. It was money and time well spent. The difference in my singing is noticeable.

DaveO:

Thanks of the story!! I am almost inspired. And Deckman, thanks for explaining what happened to my penis. I was gonna blame it on Spaw, just on general principle. Like the prostitute who got leprosy, and her business fell off...

I'll just get me hat...

I was singing with some geezers last Monday night and they sounded just fine. Like Bob said, use it or lose it. Just keep singing.

Yep, We've a guy at our club who's 71 and I'd forfeit my wedding tackle for a voice like his (well, almost!). Powerful and perfectly pitched - magic! And his memory's a lot better tahn mine too (that's summat else that deteriorates with age!).
Johnny :0)

PS looks like spelling deteriorates with age too - I meant 'than'.

Okay, if nobody else will say it, I will, a noticeable change in the voice, you better see a doc!

Pavarotti may indeed be older, but, from what I have heard, men keep their voices longer.

I suggest seeking a vocal coach familiar with *womens* voices in the menopause years.

My voice is almost gone; getting weaker each month. My main problem is no vocal cords. My genius surgeon in Boston wants me to come back so he can have a look. This man has several patients such as Pavaroti and Julie Andrews. If there is a grain of hope I will go to Boston even if it is just a visit with DR,Steven Zeitels. He's world famous.

Kendall, I'll be rooting for a grain of hope - and willing it to grow and grow.

I stopped singing for may years and found when I started again (fairly recently) that my throat became sore if I sang for any length of time and my range had reduced
In the 60s/70s I had been taught a series of voice exercises (basically 4 vowel-like sounds and a number of short singing exercises) so I started on them
Coupled with relaxations, I find I can sing as well as I ever did - probably better
Now, in my 70s I have little problems in singing whatever I choose
Exercise and avoiding strain does the trick

When I first started singing I was told that "If you were singing for s**t, you wouldn't get the smell of it"

Jim Carroll,

sounds like the notorious story of the opera house
where the poor tenor sang "Celeste Aida"
and during the ovation,
someone hollered:

Sing it again, and get it right this time ...

I'll soon be 81, or is it 181? (I get so confused at this age). Seriously, I'm still singing strongly and enjoying it more than ever. Folks who have known me for these many years say that my voice is not only as strong as ever, but is even more mellow and pleasurable. I attribute most of that to good daily vocalizing, good deep breathing, and enjoying the most wonderful wife in the world! CHEERS bob(deckman)nelson

I'm in a similar position, Bob. I'm 74 this year and, through constant use, still have a reasonably strong and resonant voice - if a shade lower in pitch than when I was young. My heart goes out to those folks for whom that facility has meant so much and who have lost it.

"Sing it again, and get it right this time ..."
Lovely story of the Great fiddle player, Kevin Burke getting a tune from an old fidle player
Every time he saw the old man, Kevin was asked top play it
Eventually, he asked the old man why he always requested it - he wa told - "I want you to play it till you get the ****** thing right"
