Tech: Routing satellite connection: How?

Does anybody know how to link two computers to one satellite internet connection, or if it's even possible? We have a router left over from when we had DSL, but I'm thinking maybe that won't do the job.

You can do what you say, but I am not technical enough to say how to do it. I once looked into it, and was going to go ahead with it in much the same way as you suggest. I didn't because it was announced that our region is now to get braodband proper.

Search for Satellite Broadband Installation, and look at some of the proffessional companies offering it. Phone them up and talk to them. i am sure they will help.

CarolC, Many routers are set so you can plug in a couple of different types of plugs, usually DSL or phone. Look to see what kind of plug your satellite system provides and check the router for the comparable plug. Setting up a wireless network from the router is a separate operation, but you can do that regardless of the type of internet access that comes into the house. We've discussed this before at Mudcat, but I can't think of what the thread was called. Someone will turn up with it.

A fairly recent article on How to Install a Wireless Network from PC Magazine came up after the previous threads on Wireless had pretty well died. They're plugging a book here, but the article raised several points I wouldn't likely have thought of until "too late." (And it's not even a very expensive book.)

It doesn't deal much with the router issues, but if wireless is to be considered it might be of interest.

Yes you can. I have friends who live on a mountain top with sat dishes as their sole link to the Net. The sat feed is distribuited via a router which then parcels the packets out to 3 or 4 different computers.

I can get you his name f it will help, but I can't remember the details of his configuration.

Thanks everybody. I'll give your suggestions a try. We're not currently looking to have a wireless network. I'm hoping we can just run a wire from a router to the second computer.

Amos, I would love to know the name of the company he uses and whether or not the router cost very much money.
