Okay, okay... You all can pick yerselves up off the floor now... Yeah, I know, like, haha... Bobert? Basketball?

Okay, beneath my usual commie crust is "Jock Bobert"... I was still playin' pickup ball well into my 30's on some of Richmond, va.'s inner city courts but that ain't what this is about...

Hey, my college, Virginia Commonwealth University, won their conference and is in the "Big Dance" (The NCAA tourny) as is Maryland, who defeated the 3, 2 and number 1 seeds (all ranked) to win the ACC tournament....

Hoooooorayyyyyyyyyy!.......

Never played, myself, and dropped out of a second-rate college, but in moving to NC became a rabid fan in short order: Duke, to be exact. We who do never watch tv in our house got cable (CABLE!) just for March Madness this year. Spent Sunday afternoon biting nails and yelling, and are looking forward to more!

Still trying to speak normally after four days in Greensboro. Maryland had a great run and were rewarded a number 4 seed. Playing Thursday will be tough but that's what you get.

ACC has six strong teams in the dance. Carolina needs to worry about Air Force in Denver, otherwise all will advance beyond first round. Duke needs to worry about Texas, Miss St. and Illinois. Sheldon Williams needs to get his wind back; I think his conditioning played a role in Duke's loss Sunday. Maryland has to worry about Alabama, or Stanford as well as Syracuse. Can Wake beat St Joes? They'll get a chance. I don't think Ga Tech can beat Kentucky.

What a great time of year!

The U of Washington (my college) are the only team to beat Stanford this year. They could be a surprise. My pick to win it all though is Gonzaga. This is one of the most exciting times in the year I must admit.

Well my season was made after Maryland's miraculous comeback against NC State and their tough finish against Duke (condolences to Blue Devil fans) to cop the ACC title. Looking forward to a great NCAA.
I envy you, Ed, that was a heckuva tournament. vl

On the womens side (yeah, I know the popular oppinion of women's basketball, but pretend to be enlightened with me just for a moment) I opened up the sports page today to see at the top that not only has Seattle Pacific made it to the elite 8, but that a good friend of mine on the team first sang the national anthem and then had 21 points and 10 assists to lead SPU to this win. Her name was in the headline at the top as well as a picture of her hugging her coach with the biggest smile I've ever seen on her. As I looked the picture over, I thought to myself, "wish I could be the coach!" So congradulations Amy Taylor and her SPU team which are still undefeated this season. It's been very inspiring to see what such hard work can accomplish!
Okay, back to the other side of the sport!
Go Huskies!
Gonzaga over Valpariso on Thursday at Key Arena.

Uh Spaw, the tournament IS in my city, and you don't hear me complaining. We've hosted much worse things. Personally, I'd much rather host a basketball game than the WTO riots again. As for the feather up your ass, it's really your decision. I can't get involved, and don't really care to be updated on just what you choose to do with it.

Hey now, Janie. You know God made the sky DUKE blue, and it's only when the sun's in the way that it APPEARS Carolina blue....

Here's a funny story for alla you who appreciate women's basketball:

A friend of mine played for Duke, and she is of course a rabid fan and active alumna (sp?). Has taken her little ones to every game she could, and they've grown up steeped in the women's basketball tradition. One day her little boy asked her, "Mom, can boys play basketball, too?"

...doh!

Can't tell you how thrilled I was to see this thread (thanks Bobert). A while back I did a search for a basketball thread, and danged if there weren't any---I thought the 'Cat was baseball happy--That's fine, but it sure is a treat to know other folks are watching too!

A lil' PS--there was a segment on local news tonight about NCAA betting pools. An interesting sidenote was that in over 60% of the people they interviewed, the people pick their winning teams by the color of their uniforms....scandalous....

The brackets are so important around here that the Louisville Courier-Journal (newspaper) prints a "suitable for copying" version of the brackets so everyone can have an office pool. This is serious business. One year I came in 5th out of several hundred people because I let my (future at the time) son-in-law fill it out for me. All the guys in the entire company were upset that mostly women had the most points for picking winners. If you pretty much go with the Vegas odds or just the seeding, you can do pretty well. Most of the guys tried to pick the upsets. (Picking an upset early on can really mess up your chance for points all the way through.)

In case some of you folks across the pond are wondering what this is all about, here is a printable bracket to fill in who you think will win each basketball game. Notice the number ONE seeds! (Go Big Blue!)

Close games yesterday in N.C. Wake barely made it and the Gators go home! Of course Dook is Dook. Gary and the Terps squeezed by and Carolina dodged the Air Force Home Court advantage bullet. I'm thinking NC State and GA Tech roll today.

We'll see how the Spiders do tonight against Wisconsin.

I am wearing black.

It is small comfort that two of the three greatest players to ever play the game came from Indiana -- Oscar Robertson (greatest ever) and Larry Bird (co #2 with M. Jordan) *grin*

Yeah, like anybody really thought that Valparasio would beat Gonzaga. If they did though, that would of really screwed up my bracket! However, Eastern Washington University (which is very close to Gonzaga) is now out. UW is playing later today (they'd better win).

After three years at Duke and never missing a home game, I can't give up on them now. They were not quite as good in my days on campus, but were beginning to build. In those days seven footers were not expected to run and jump. They just stood near the basket and made layups and swatted opponents shots away from the basket until they fouled out. There have been some big changes since then.

Mary in KY, I agree with you ...GO WILDCATS!!!

HOWEVER, LOUISVILLE will win it all. Sorry, but the Cats don't have the depth to go all the way. I see Louisville playing Illinois in the semis and coming out on top. The other bracket's tougher to call. I think UK beats UT, and I think Duke beats Mich St, and I believe UK is better than Duke. BUT I think North Carolina beats Kentucky in the semis. Now, I would like nothing better than an All Bluegrass Final! Up until that happens, I'll be rooting for both.

How'd I miss this thread for the entire last two weeks! Count me in as one more semi-obsessed roundball fan. Basketball is the one sport I was able to play at the high-school level, and I still love to watch, even though I quit playing pickup games at about age 40, back in the last century.

None of my usual favorite teams got into the field of 65* this year (my alma mater, my brother's and sister's, the local state university, etc., etc.). That isn't stopping me from obsessive TV watching over these three extended weekends. Because I'm free from all loyalties and entanglements, I can adopt a new favorite every day or two, generally siding with the most obvious "Cinderella" underdogs.

I kinda like Utah to maybe sneak through and take it all. Their big Australian center is really quite a player; I knew nothing at all about him before tournament coverage started last week, and I'm very impressed. He should become an outstanding pro ~ hopefully, for my lowly New Orleans Hornets, who have a pretty good shot at the #1 draft pick this year.

*What's with that one extra team, and the extra "lead-in" game? I wasn't paying attention when the NCAA snuck this stupid new wrinkle into the setup two or three years ago. Isn't a nice, even, large number like 64 enough teams?

I assume that one more small-time conference champion was added to the list of automatic bids, and the big-time powers lobbied to prevent the loss of even one at-large entry. What a load of crap. Making sure to include the fifth-best team in the ACC or the sixth-best in Big East doesn't really improve the tournament as a fair process for producing a genuine National Champion: it only makes sure that just as many major-school coaches as ever can put "made the tournament this year" on their resumes ~ even coaches whose teams won't make it past the first two or three rounds. Pure politics.

Of course, they could add a whole new preliminary round and invite 128 teams. That oughta make plenty of coaches happy.

Did the weekend leave everyone speechless? I can't believe this thread fell off the bottom of the page by Monday. That was some of the most amazing b-ball drama ever, and no one had much of anything to say.

Well, I'm not able to articulate much about it, either. It was all just too, too much.

PS: Padre, if you were at WVU at the same time as Rod Thorn & Jerry West, you must remember Hot Rod Huntley, too ~ one of my faves, both as a player and as an announcer. I always felt a little sorry for him, in that all his records and other great accomplishments were so quickly eclipsed by all-time-great Jerry West, who was only one year behind him (or maybe two) both at college and with the Lakers.

Louisville beats Illinois in overtime. North Carolina beats Michigan State. Louisville beats North Carolina to win the thing.

PS Note to Tubby. Why the hell didn't ya have Rondo get the ball to that big goofy freshman under the basket at the end of overtime? That woulda left Michigan State with two options...foul him or let him score the two points.
