From: Blackcatter Here's what my church will be doing Friday morning: "Gay couples to seek marriage here in protest against state law" By Mark I. Pinsky | Orlando Sentinel Staff Writer March 18, 2004, 12:36 PM EST Nine gay couples will apply for marriage licenses Friday at the Orange County Courthouse, according to the Rev. Marni Harmony, of the First Unitarian Church of Orlando. "This is our faith-based initiative," said Harmony. All of the couples expect to be turned down, Harmony said, consistent with Florida state law, which bans state-sanctioned gay marriage and domestic partnerships. The goal of the event, Harmony said, is "to raise our awareness of marriage as a matter of civil right." Two of the gay couples have already taken part in domestic-union ceremonies in Vermont, where such ceremonies are legal. --------------- We will have at least 10 straight couples renewing their vows during the wedding ceremony. What do you all think? I am a board member of the church, by the way. I'll be online for a few more hours to answer questions (it's 11:09 Eastern time). Blackcatter. |

18 Mar 04 - 11:44 PM (#1140583) Subject: RE: BS: Gay Marriage Protest & Wedding! From: Blackcatter Our minister, the Rev. Dr. Marni Harmony will be joined with at least 5 of her fellow Unitarian Universalist ministers. In the 11 pm news, none of the channels reported where the actual ceremony will be taking place. Hopefully that will keep the protesters a bit off guard. Our Orlando City councilperson will also be in attendence. We were trying to keep it mum's the word until Friday morning, but someone leaked much of the info. The good news is that most of the news agencies are sympathetic with our action. |

Actually, she is renewing her vows with her partner as well. Hope everyone keeps their eyes on their local news on Friday. I'd love to see if this gets picked up. We're expecting some national coverage. Fox News has decided to keep their satellite truck on our property all night in hopes of getting the story when we all meet at the church to head to the courthouse. pax y'all |

19 Mar 04 - 06:19 PM (#1141280) Subject: RE: BS: Gay Marriage Protest & Wedding! From: Blackcatter Hello all. It went off with out a hitch - well three same-sex couples DID get hitched. And 7 same-sex and 8 opposite sex couples joined them by renewing their vows. Only one lonely protester and he was quite respectful during the ceremony in the main park in Downtown Orlando. There was about 150 attendees and about 40 newspeople. Hello Martin. Thanks for your view. I would hesitate to call this a trend, however. Gay couples have been committed to their relationships with one another for thousands of years. Blackcatter |
