BS: Oh the fucking, fecking, fudging FCC!

The FCC had let Bono off the hook for using the word "fucking" because his use of it was not as a verb, but as of the 18th they have now decided the "fuck," and all of it's permutations, is a big NO-NO, no matter how it is used! More Big Brother shrub et al:

Yesterday, March 18th, the FCC ruled that it would no longer tolerate the use of that dastardly of words, and it's not fudge (that makes me hungry). That means, from television, to radio, to stage, performers, television personalities, and on-air entertainment, better watch their mouth.

Oh fuck!

I am very much a civil libertarian, but I don't have any problem with the FCC wanting to keep certain words and behaviors off of broadcast radio and television. If they start fucking around with non-broadcast communication, that's a different matter all together.

I say "fuck" several times a day. I have an inalienable right to say "fuck" in my own home. However, I do not have a right to say "fuck" to every stranger I meet on the street. I don't have any problem with that. In fact, I don't exactly want perfect strangers coming up to me and saying "fuck".

So, what's the issue? If the FCC says that you can't say "fuck" in an on-air broadcast, that's no skin off my ass. If they say that a premium cable channel like HBO can't show programming with "fuck" used in it, that's another issue. If I know that HBO shows movies with "fuck" in them and I pay to have HBO cabled into my house then I'm saying that I don't mind the word "fuck" coming out of my television speaker. My Christian fundamentalist neighbor probably doesn't subscribe to HBO precisely because he knows that HBO movies will have "fuck" in them. He has a right to watch over-the-air television without having to listen to "fuck" coming out of his speakers.

The issue at hand before the FCC is only free, over-the-airwaves radio and television - not paid cable programming, movies, live performances, CD's or literature. Let 'em ban away.

oh, goody! Ban all them naughty words, I say! How are we gonna keep the intrinsic panasche and force of good cuss words if everyone and their 2nd cousin Charlie are using them in every 2rd utterance! Next thing, Dan Rather will be reporting on "another fucking car-bomb in Iraq"!

Do you not understand the value and power of occasional use of the forbidden? Otherwise we end up with this example of an Aussie bloke showing the descent into totally useless blather, like a Valley Girl using words like, ummm 'like'...

""Oh, I 'ad a fine time last Saturday..it was a fuckin' beautiful day, so I got in my fuckin' car and went for a nice fuckin' drive...till I came to this fuckin' park, and decided to get out and take a fuckin' walk. Well, I walked about a fuckin' mile and here was this fuckin' lovely lass walkin' just ahead of me..I gave her a fuckin' cheery greetin' and we hit it off right away. So we walked on down the fuckin' lane till various things in our fuckin' conversation made me quite fuckin' aware that we were fuckin' interested in the same fuckin' thing....so I looked at her...she looked at me...and we fuckin' smiled and went over a fuckin' fence and behind a fuckin' tree where no one could fuckin' see us......and had sexual intercourse!"

I personally am getting fed up with hearing that word on television especially when it seems to be arbitrary whether its allowed or not so we get beeps in talk shows but films using it all the time. Its not a word I use and I don't like it used in my company.

When you've got an acronym like "FCC", you'd think you'd have learnt to be a bit relaxed about this word... "Federal Communications Commission", I see kit means. What a pity they didn't call it the "Federal Union Communications Commission"...

The FCC has always been a nanny. When I was little (1940s) I read in a newspaper that the FCC had decreed that henceforth the word "diaper" might be used on the radio. The columnist hoped that it would only be used in dry humor.

In those days it was impossible to say anything about sex on the radio -- even its public-health aspects -- because *all* the words, even the medical ones, were taboo.

Count your blessings.

Have always wondered how they got the brand name FCUK (French Connection, United Kingdom) past the censors, but today noticed some jolly boxer shorts for sale. The package had the usual picture of someone you'd rather see without the shorts on, but woven through the waistband of these trollies was the legend U S U K (Urban Scene, United Kingdom, allegedly).

I don't have the lyrics to Anne Feeney's "A Lecture From Your Mother", but it belongs on the mudcat. Each verse ends with the line, "It's from them that I'd expect to see that F-word not from you!" followed by the chorus, "Every time we have a chat, it's F word this and F word that. I can't control they way you young folks talk to one another. But I never want to hear you say that F word to your mother".
It's one of Anne Feeney's Seven Song's You Can't Sing in Edgewood, a local suburb, where the FCC might be seen as too liberal. Of course my mother grew up in Edgewood, and she thought the song was a howl.

I don't care in the least what howie stern mutters on-air as I don't listen to it. I exercise my right to freedom of choice by choosing not to listen to such dribble. The constant assualt of deleted expletives is the mark of one who is lacking in verbal skills & creativeity. It is, by far, more interesting to use creative colorful metaphors, than those pathetic donkey's p'toots who are constantly saying the same lame verbage, proving only that the poor sons of bachelors have mental abilities ranking smaller than their shoe sizes.

It's not people fucking and blinding in conversation that hacks me off (although I agree with Kaleea, it's a sad comment on their imagination and grasp of their own language), but I do object to 'Entertainers' who use it as the main weapon in their armoury - I've never understood how people whose language includes frequent use of the words fuck and fucking can wet their pants laughing at some 'Comedian' (and I use the term loosely) just because he uses those words too! Is it possibly because his foul mouth is an uncomfortable reminder to his audience of their own inadequacies?

I wish I were a Brit
I'd never again say "shit"
It sounds so erudite
when made to rhyme with "white"

And "fecking", so I've heard,
Is another British word
just oozing savoir-faire
To the backward Yankee ear.

Only the uncultured masses
Refer to "tits" and "asses"
The Queen sits on 'er "oss" so
that's the proper way to go.

oo oo oo I wanna be like You oo oo
I wanna walk like you, talk like you

"shite" and "fecking" are essentially Irish expressions which have crept into use over here, largely thanks to the Pogues. (Which isn't to deny that originally the former word especially would have been an import from England.)

The words "shite" and "fecking" sound more obscene to my ear than "shit " or "fucking" because they compound any offensiveness of the actual use of the original words with hypocricy.

FYI, "shite" is the original form of the verb & noun. "Shit" was the past tense (shite, shit, shitten; cf. bite). For reasons obscure to the lexicogrphers, the original past tense took over from the other forms in most dialects -- including, I think, all the American ones.

South Park took on the Jannet Jackson controversy the other night. The kids got Ninja weapons (spoofed the anime crowd rather well) and accidentally put a throwing star into another child's eye. The whole things came to a head when Cartman (a very large young boy if you don't watch) tried to sneak across a stage buck naked (he had the power of invisibility). It ended with the people having a town hall meeting where they expressed their outrage at having a nude little boy exposing himself in public and cartman claiming it was a wardrobe malfunction. Thus the parents were riled up about sex and not the violence that had occurred. Hit home pretty well I thought.

Songs of Cuba, Silenced in America
By JACKSON BROWNE

Published: March 22, 2004

LOS ANGELES — Carlos Varela, the great Cuban singer-songwriter, applied for a visa to come to the United States to sing his powerful, amazing songs. He had concerts planned in Miami, New York and Los Angeles. Our government turned him down.

Visas have been denied to other Cuban artists because their visits are "detrimental to the interests" of our country. In essence, the government says that if Carlos Varela plays concerts in the United States, the money he makes would go to Fidel Castro. This is untrue. In Cuba, renowned artists keep much of what they earn, because the government does not want them to leave the country and live somewhere else. Yet, the Bush administration used the same reasoning to keep Ibrahim Ferrer, of the Buena Vista Social Club, and Manuel Galbán from attending the Grammy award ceremony in Los Angeles last month. (Both men won awards.)

It also forced the postponement of concerts by the Spanish flamenco master Paco de Lucía because he plays with Alain Pérez Rodríguez, a Cuban-born bassist. I congratulate the State Department on finally determining that Mr. Pérez is not "detrimental to the interests" of our country, although those of us who were able to reschedule and hear him play this month know that he is a truly dangerous man.

In a profound way, our government takes on the role of oppressor when it tries to control which artists will be allowed access to our minds and our hearts. We may think we are isolating Cuba with our embargo and our travel restrictions, but it is we Americans who are becoming isolated. People travel to Cuba from Australia, Britain, Canada, Italy and Spain — countries we consider staunch allies.

Once when I heard the Berryman's doing "A chat" they told a story about one of the first times they performed it. As I recall it, they were performing live for some radio program. They told the MC that they had this song, but they were not sure if they could do it for the radio. The MC replied to the effect "Just so long as it doesn't have the F-Word"

We all laughed; I don't think they actually told us if they did it.
