Review: Richie Havens

my god. saw Ritchie Havens in concert at Hugh's Room in Toronto last weekend and am still high from the whole experience. Despite constant tuning, a weak opening act and some kefuffles with the sound system it was the most intoxicating show I've seen in years. I wasn't even a Havens fan...hadn't listened to any of his stuff since I watched Woodstock...but was mesmerized by the man's charm, wit, sweetness and talent. I've never seen anyone's right hand move so quickly.

the guy sitting at our table had his tickets from Woodstock with him ($7.00 each which is less than a glass of wine would cost now) and I hope Ritchie signed them for him!

other than too many worshipful fans who yelled "Freedom" all night it was a magical experience.

Anyone else have a special concert to exault?

:)

I saw Ritchie Havens a couple of years ago. The evening was chock full of flashbacks to the 60's. In fact, it was almost like being transported there again. He was just as groovy as ever! I had forgotten how many of Havens' songs I had loved. I was a treat to hear them all again in a single night.

Richie is one of the world's greatest live performers, bar none.

Anyone in the midwest area who would like to see Richie Havens should consider coming to our "Nor-East'r" music festival. It will be held June 11 - 13 in Mio, Michigan (located in the north east part of lower Michigan). The area is back in the sticks and we have an excellent site with plenty of camping, trees, etc.

The website for the festival is:       http://www.noreastr.net/

We will be there and would enjoy seeing any of you who can attend.
If you need any further information you can contact me via e-mail:
RMiller@m33access.com
You could also incorporate the festival with a vacation as we have a lot of wilderness activities in the area. Especially if you would enjoy something like canoeing down the AuSable River...

I saw him last time he came to my area. Like you said AMAZING!! It was an incredible show! He is one of my influences, and I jumped at the chance to see him again (I saw him in Connecticut too!).
His stage presence and stories are fabulous. His voice is still strong and one of the most recognizable voices in music, and his playing... OH MY!! He's also the nicest guy you'll ever want to meet.
I took my wife to see him, and she wasn't really thrilled about going. She didn't know a lot about him... wasn't a fan. Well, she walked out of there a fan that night! It was very nice!

Oh, I'm a fan and I hadn't even heard him perform live! Wow, it doesn't surprise me he has an awesome stage presence though. :)

Just hearing him speak is like hearing poetry...
It was kinda damp when we went to see him. It was an open air concert, and I still brought my guitar for him to sign.
He couldn't believe it! I took it out when I got up to the stage and he exclaimed "Woooow! That's wild!". Unfortunately we didn't have much time to talk.

Richie has an instructional video on his guitar style. It was recently released by Homespun tapes.
