If you play violin, go to this. I have played with Nahro and know him well, he is brilliant! Before he was chased out by Saddam he had his own orchestra in Iraq.A world class violinist.

Thanks for publicising this, JOhn. I am just helping on the organisational side, and backing fiddler Kate Barfield in the evening.Nahro is also bringing his band(this isnt advertised,|I only heard last night). The format is, workshops in the afternoon, and concert in the evening. Plus there's usually a session somewhere. I think there's another thread on this(probably labelled with something with the words Nantwich and fiddle), but I've not been able to access mudcat for a couple of days so I'm not in touch.Hope to see some people there, amyone who likes fiddles (or music, come to that) will find something to enjoy.

Totally agree with El Ted, Nahro is an excellent violinist if you are in the area dont miss this opportunity.

I would like to correct a misapprehension implied in the title of this thread. I dont play the fiddle. I have spent thirty five years, man and boy, researching NW English fiddle tunes, but I dont play the fiddle. I play guitar, tenor banjo and melodeon. The fiddle is far too difficult.

Well, it's TODAY (Sat 27).
A wonderful thing happened last night, nahro came over from Hull and to stay with us, and invited a few Kurdish friends for supper, and one of them turned out to know Nahro well back in Bagda years ago, and they hadnt seen each other since they both escaped. And there they were, the winds of the world had blown them into Stoke on the same night. So come and see us in Nantwich today if you want a treat.
JOhn from Hull: I'll PM you about this. And many thanks for telling me about Nahro Zagros in the first place, which has made it all possible.

Stoke must but be a point of convergence on the astral plan. Wish I could be there greg. Have a blast and give the lovely Kate a kiss from me (be sure to tell who it's from, you old buggger).

all the best,
your pal chance

Your Welcome Greg, I've just phoned you, but your not in, ring me when you get home.
Let's try to organise something like this in Hull, I'm sure it would get loads of support!
I'm not sure who to contact about organising it, but I will find out.

How did it go?

A good time was had by all. Nahro Zagros organised his whole band to come to Nantwich(most from Hull, but the guitarist came all the way from Berlin)...fantastic, when it is only a small do, and he was working for a modest fidddle workshop fee for one person, no fee for the band! A true hero. There was a fine bit of cross-culture in the evening concert, when Dan Eldon(Jim Eldon's lad) joined tthe Zagros band for a bit of wheezy reggae accompanied on a dramatically out-of-tune and knackered-bellows Hohner 4-wstop one-row.
A white van-load of Kurds arrived for the concert, which was very funny. You normally only see a van-load of Kurds in Nantwich in the small hours, when they are being delivered to work on shifts at the local bakery!
The workshop also went well, 20-odd fiddlers working hard at learning Kurdish weirdy scales and tunes. Nahro is a patient and good teacher.
Altogether a great day. The best bit was me singing "The Wreck of the OLd 97" at the evening concert. (Well, that's just my opinion, of course).
Thanks again to JOhn from Hull for providing the crucial contact that lead to this grand get-together.
