BS: two types of people in the world

26 Mar 04 - 06:38 PM (#1147081)
Subject: BS: two types of people in the world
From: freda underhill

somebody once told me, there are 2 types of people in the world...

those that think there are two types of people...

and everyone else.

Now, I've read that psychologists think that there are two types of people.

the people that blame themeselves whenever something goes wrong, and see how they can change themselves to try and fix it.
the people that blame someone else, and have a good bitch about them.

another example of two types of people is the people that eat their favourite part of the meal first, and the people who save the best part for last.

do you know two types of people? who /what are they?

There are actually 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary numbers and those who don't.

Those that can hear it but ignore it.

Those that hear it and understand it.

Those that hear it, understand it, and act on it.

Thats 3 kinds of people.

1. The kind who care which way the TP roll is hung up, and this group is further subdivided into the overhand and underhand camps; these two camps think they ARE the two kinds of people there are, and never suspect they actually have more in common than in contrast, because the REAL second group of people are:

2. The kind who are just glad someone else already hung it up, and thus are members of a group that can both sh*t AND get off the pot.

There are perhaps a thousand different kinds of people in the world. There are two kinds I avoid, major loons and people who don't like to read and don't like animals. (I've known a few people who didn't like reading, who were still worth knowing, and a few people who didn't like animals who were still worth knowing. But the combination is to be avoided at all costs.)

There are just two kinds of people on earth today
Just two kind of people no more I will say
Its not the good or the bad,for it's understood
That the good are half bad and the bad are half good

It's not the rich or the poor, for to know a man's wealth
you must first know the state,of his conscience and health
It's not the humble and proud, for in lifes little span
For he who is vain-glorious is scarcely a man

Not the happy or sad,for in lifes fleeting years
Brings each man his happiness, and each man his tears
But the two kind of people,on earth that I mean
Are the people who lift, and the people who lean

Yes there are just two kind of people on earth today
Just two kind of people no more I will say
And oddly enough, and its true I wean
There is only one lifter for the twenty who lean

For a long time I have asked people in what order they ate their M&M's candies when they were kids. Basically, there are two types: those that ate the ugly ones (brown, tan) first versus those who ate the pretty ones (red, green) first.

I don't think I have never met anyone who didn't remember, and people who ate them in any order are rare.

I always saved the pretty ones till the end. Sometimes I thought red was the prettiest, sometimes the green.

A bright young sociology professor went out to interview a cowboy who was, believe it or not, 147 years old. After asking the usual stuff ("Do anything special to live this long?? and so on), he asked the old wadie what he'd learned about life.

"Well," the old cowpoke said, "I learned that there's folks who learn their lessons good by readin' and watchin', and they're less than one percent of the folks on the planet. And then there are them that learn good from doin', and they're maybe no more than three percent of the folks. And the rest of us, why, we jist keep pissin' in our boots."

ÒGumbyÓ is my new word for what I used to call Òaverage dumb userÓ (ADU). The computing world is divided into two kinds of people: ÒgeeksÓ and ÒgumbiesÓ. WeÕre the geeks. Our users are the gumbies. In the Mac networking world, the primary function of the geek is to make things as simple as possible for the gumby, so the gumby doesnÕt have to become a geek in order to use the network. Hiding complexity is the name of the game.

Solipsism is the _belief_ that you create all you perceive; but espousing thebelief intellectually does not make it true practically, You have to really embrace it deeply for it to come true. And if you were to do so, and succeed, no-one would know, anyway!

actually, people come on a sliding scale...exemplified by

"The McLandress Coefficient" (copied & pasted from a couple of sources)

Herschel McLandress was a professor of psychiatric measurement
at Harvard Medical School, and he developed a way to measure a
person's degree of self- absorption. In spoken and written material
he measured the use of "I," "me," and "my" and the "Coefficient" was
the longest span of time a person can remain diverted from himself.
"... the arithmetic mean or average of the intervals of time during which a subject's thoughts remain centered on some substantive phenomenon other than his own personality."
Eleanor Roosevelt was supposed to have a McLandress
coefficient of two hours; John F. Kennedy's was twenty-nine minutes,
and Elizabeth Taylor's was three minutes. Richard Nixon was 3
seconds.

So......if you want to divide people into two types, you can collapse this to refer to those whose McLandress coefficient impresses you, and "others"...like R. Nixon. (I met Alan Ginsberg once, and he impressed me as able to focus on others as long as anyone I have ever met.) ....and our own Rick Fielding could do similar things!

Perhaps I should have said,

People who are (or perceive themselves to be) lucky
&
People who are (or perceive themselves to be) unlucky.

Perception aside, there is also the factor of random chance.
Bad shit does happen, sometimes arbitrarily. Good shit, too.
There is such a thing as an innocent bystander.

I'm a firm believer in luck. Then again, I've been extraordinarily lucky.

Bill D, you are aware that the "McLandress Coefficient" is a fiction, yes? The book, The McLandress Dimension, was written by John Kenneth Galbraith, using a pseudonym. Here's a passage from Galbraith's A Life In Our Times:

"...in 1962, while recovering from hepatitis at my friend Ruth Field's house on Long Island, I invented a 'psychometricist' by the name of Herschel McLandress who had come up with this measure - "the McLandress Dimension." This and his other scientific efforts of the same nature became a book by that title which I published, with a satisfactory response, under the pseudonym of Mark Epernay, the Mark from Mark Twain, Epernay from an old wine crate in the stable where I was working."

Which isn't to say it's not a legitimate way to classify people, by their level or degree of self-absorption, but it would be funny if some one were to get the impression from reading your post that this is a factual rather than a fictional measurement.
