Hello all.

I don't think we've done something like this for a long time.

Here's the quiz. TV Westerns - a quote from the lyrics - what's the show? Be forewarned - some are difficult, including ones which never aired the actual lyrics to the themes. One is also part of a spoken intro. I'll post the answers later.

1. He's friend of the weak, And the poor and the meek.

2. He roamed the wilderness unafraid from Natchez to Rio Grande.

3. Soon we'll be living high and wide.

4. But his killin' turned him cold, he grew bitter, he grew bold.

5. Wherever you go, for the rest of your life you must prove you're a man.

6. The high-falutin'est, fastest shootin'est cowboy you ever saw.

7. Once you got his dander up, Ain't no one who's quicker on the draw.

8. My old Pappy always told me your fate is in your hands. Stand pat or draw - it's yours to choose.

9. And as he silently roved, where evil violently ploved.

10. He searched the land, this restless lad.

11. Better watch out for these man-eating jackrabbits and that killer cacti.

12. The wagon wheels you used to feel, will sing their song no more!

13. Anyone of us who starts a little fuss knows he can count on me.

14. Way out there on the Triple R, Yippee yay, yippee yo, The horses are the best by far.

15. The wind that blows, that comes and goes, has been your only home.

16. Where Indian fights are colorful sights & nobody takes a lickin'.

17. Who cares about the clouds when we're together?

18. If your past has run afoul the law, It's a handy place to be, but your future's just a good as your draw.

19. Had ruffles at his wrists, brocade and silver buckles and iron in his fists.

20. Well, he heard about Houston and Austin and so, to the Texas plains, he just had to go.

21. Like a streak of lightnin' flashing 'cross the sky, like the swiftest arrow whizzing from a bow.

22. Most call him gunman and killer. He's my son, who I hardly knew.

23. We are staying, here forever in the beauty of this place all alone.

24. There are campfire legends that the trailmen spin of the man with the gun.

25. Who lived to ride again and fight for the rights and the liberty of all.

I also withdraw No6. I only got as far as "High falutin'" and my mind did an "Auto-complete" to give me different lyrics

Correct me if I'm wrong, Blackcatter, but I'm thinking #25 was the story of a man who had a rope mark on his neck.

3 of the counter quiz is Maverick
6 is Bat Masterson, I believe
10 might be stretching the Westerns idea a bit if I am right. I think it might be from the show about Mosby's Raiders; but I don't think it went by that name.

Good work so far on the counterquiz! You've got

2. "The Eyes of Texas" ("I've Been Workin' on the Railroad")

3. Maverick

5. Bronco

6. Wyatt Earp

9. Texas John Slaughter

10. Zorro

Here's another one (not strictly a "western" but had old-timey guys ridin' and shootin' in America): "----- ----, ----- ----, tail on his hat, Nobody knows where the ------ ----- at."

Did "The Gray Ghost" have a song? I can't remember one.

Hard to believe neither one of us thought of this one earlier:

"An eye like an eagle and as tall as a mighty oak tree."

The first answer of the counter quiz is "This is the story of 26 men, who roamed the Arizona Territory" 26 Men is the name of the show.

The extra credit answer is El Fago Baca. I probably spelled that wrong.

Disney had a show within it's regular Sunday show called "Willie and the Yank, but also known as Mosby's Maurauder's.

That show was different from The Grey Ghost

Willie and the Yank did had lyrics:

Both Reb and Yankee Strangers,
They Called us Mosby's Rangers
North and South they know our fame
Grey Ghost is what they called me
John Mosby is my name.

The Grey Ghost had a voice-over:

"We took our men from Texas, Kentucky, and Virginia; from the mountains and the backwoods and the plains. We put them under orders — guerrilla fighting orders, and what we lacked in numbers, we made up in speed and brains. Both Rebs and Yankee strangers, they called us 'Mosby's Rangers.' Both North and South they knew our fame. Gray Ghost is what they called me; John Mosby is my name."

Is that cheating? We've already exhausted what is left of my memory!

#4 is the same as #3 of the counter quiz, "Maverick". I don't think I ever heard those last couple of verses before. Were those sung as scene transitions rather than at the start and finish of the show?

On my quiz it's the remake of Maverick from 1981. Theme sung by James Garner in the series that lasted only 1 year - though it was pretty good.

And no - it's not cheating cause there's no rules, but it's fun to rely on memory.

take care.
