05 Apr 04 - 09:26 AM (#1154800) Subject: Fixing a Digital Piano From: *daylia* Hi everyone; I'm wondering if there's any keyboard owners out there who could help me with this problem. The Variation buttons (to change sounds)on my Roland FP8 digital piano have been non-functional for the last couple weeks. The salespeople at the music store where I bought the keyboard over ten years ago tell me the only way to fix it is to send the piano away for repairs at a minimum $50 charge, then $75/hr. I got the same story from a Roland repair site in the US last week. Before I go to all that trouble and expense, and leave myself without a keyboard to teach on for a few weeks, I'd like to know if there's a spray that's safe to use on a digital keyboard to "unstick" those buttons. I've heard such sprays exist for computers. I'm wondering if anyone here has tried it on a keyboard, or has fixed a "digital" problem at home themselves via any other method. How many buttons are there ? - if several have stopped functioning at the same time, it sounds more like loose common connection. If the buttons aren't mounted on the main board, it's possible something as simple as a loose connector. |

Comes in an aersol spray and evaporates very quickly. However, suggest you check with someone more knowledgable as I personally cannot guarantee that it would be safe for your keyboard. It is safe for most electronic equipment, T V, computers etc.and have used it on several keyboards brought in for repair with great results. |

The Variation buttons did stop working simultaneously, and they are the only two of the 11 on the piano that are non-functioning. I can still use the piano as it is - just can't change from a grand to a honky-tonk piano sound for example. So you're right, Dave, it's probably a loose common connection. Not a major problem. *whew* The kids I teach can be a bit heavy-handed in their enthusiasm as they explore those sound variations sometimes! GGRRRRRRR I'm 99% sure nothing was spilled on it, as I do keep the plastic cover over it when it's not in use. I'll look for a can of compressed air, MMario, and for the aerosol HiHo Silver mentioned too. Off to trusty ole Canadian Tire, and Radio Shack then ... and thank you all again! daylia |

A $10 can of spray from Radio Shack and 5 minutes later I'm Maple Leaf Raggin' on a honky-tonk and not a Steinway again. HURRAH!!! Thank you so VERY much, HiHo Silver! Cleaning with compressed air and maybe some contact cleaner, may do the trick. It's amazing how often it's just dust that's the problem. Good luck. -Joe- |
