Kat's book, 'WindWords of Wyoming" now an eBook

05 Apr 04 - 07:40 PM (#1155270)
Subject: BS: Presale of Kat's book, 'WindWords of WY'
From: katlaughing

After having one publisher say yes and then it falling through, then getting another one who said yes, to whom I said, "no thanks," and through various conversations with family, friends, and other writers, I have decided to self-publish my book, WindWords of Wyoming: brief essays on Nature, Spirituality, Animals & People.

It's really JenEllen's fault that I am doing it this way.**bg** She and I were talking about it, recently. I was bemoaning the lack of funds when she said, rather brilliantly, imo, "Why don't you presell it?"

So, to any who are interested, please visit my website (no pop-ups!) at Mindfull Spoken. The first 100 prepaid copies will be personally autographed, postage-paid. (I will be *tweaking* the website and going to no-ads, soon. Any suggestions, if not too technical, are welcome.:-)

Max says I have his blessing and good luck and a portion of each sale will be donated to the Mudcat, not just from the first 100, but from every book sold. That this book even came to fruition is due in large part to the Mudcat, PeterT and the Thought for the Day threads he started, as well as the encouragement and love of several other Mudcatters. And, for that, I am deeply grateful.

Thanks,

luvyakat

Kat----Welcome to the world of the folkie. This is the only way to really experience the scene as it has evolved in this U.S of A. Make your own LPs---cassettes----CDs--- books too and hawk 'em from your trunk, or the side of the stage, or use 'em for promo, as calling cards, as a place to put your hot coffee or pizza slice. I needed to have a place specific cassette to sell on the Mississippi River steamboats-- so I went into a studio and recorded it in two hours and had 'em to sell the Monday next. I used those there on the river for ten whole years. The older folks I was pickin' for on those boats didn't know from CDs; wouldn't've had anything to play 'em on anyway. The only way to come out ahead gigging around and burning gasoline was to sell stuff after the show. So, lady, you are joining a great lineage. Here's hoping you rake it in.

Lemme know particulars and you've made a sale.

Love to you and Rog,

Art

Oh, Art, read your PM, darlin'. Thanks so much. It's a bit scary at the moment, but exciting. I was thinking to myself, so this is what it must feel like when one of us posts about "shameless self-promotion" and stepping out in "faith" to make their own CD. I'd done it for my brother's music, but never for myself, so it's a little out of my "comfort zone." You nailed it perfectly.:-)

Thank you, vega and welcome to the Mudcat!

One more note to those who are interested: all monies received will be held in a separate account until the first one hundred books are sold. Then, off to the book printer's and voila!...3-4 months later we send them out to you. If, for some reason, it takes too long to presell one hundred, I will return all monies. I am up to 16 sold, so far, and I wouldn't mind if folks wanted to prepay in two installments, if it makes it easier on your budget. Remember, once all one hundred are prepaid, some of it goes to Mudcat, too!

Thanks for the PMs, etc.

And in line with that good advice of gargoyle, nobody out there stand up and sing a song, until someone for the music industry comes round and gives you a contract. "Shut up until you're told to speak" as they say in some places.

There's a big difference between "vanity publishing" and "samizdat". As Art pointed out there, this kind of thing is what's been happening around folk music since for ever.

Loreen McKinnett marketed her own material, and did very well with it. So have a host of others. That's not vanity publishing. It can be done. I could do it myself if I wasn't so busy doing a whole lot of other things. People keep bugging me about that. They WANT to buy my CD's, but I haven't yet made one.

I meant to tell folks, I will be putting all monies received in a separate account. If for some reason, the first one hundred don't sell within a reasonable amount of time, I will refund it all.

Also, I have no problem taking payments, over 3-4 months, if that helps with budgets. And, I think I will be adding PayPal to my site for easier transactions.

Thanks a bunch, ya'll!

"Vanity publishing" is when the aim of the operation is for the author to have their name on something that looks like a book, for the sake of it.

It's not the same as wanting to share something you've written, with the focus on that, and not on the person who wrote it. That's no different from standing up and singing a song you've written. If you don't don't do that you aren't treating it fairly.   Songs have a right to be heard. And kat's words have a right to be read. And other people have a right to read them.

And for nasty money-grubbing types, this looks like a pretty good investment too...

After a couple of weeks of working with different printers, I have decided to go with a local company and found a LOT better price!

So...for each signed, postage paid book which is prepaid it will only cost $15 USD and PayPal is all set.

Here's the site, again: blue clicky.

There is a feature article in the works by one of the Wyoming newspapers. When it is published, I'll put in a link or paste it in here.

Thanks, again, for all of your PMs, support, etc.

Here's the Wyoming newspaper article online: click here.

They spelled my name wrong in the headline (arrgghhh!) and got the web addy slightly wrong, plus I think the transfer to online missed a paragraph or two (I've emailed to ask), but it's still informative AND they did get the cover photo right! So, now you can see what that will look like, at least.:-)

kat

AHhh...what is online is a "first draft" of the online version. The final version will be along, shortly. They are new to the internet, with their archives. Phew!

The store needs some more fancying up, but the product looks good, got my first copy today, and Cafe Press handles all aspects of the ordering, returns, shipping, etc.

For those of you who already pre-ordered, look to receive your copy in a couple of weeks. I will order the printed editions, have them sent to me, then autograph(as promised:-) and get them sent out. THANKS for your support and patience!

I guess one could say this is the first book to come out of Mudcat, as it contains many of the Thought for the Day postings I made over the years, as well as a posting by Lonesome EJ and a couple of others, including a song by Alba which was inspired by a poem I posted on Mudcat. I'll tell you more about the song when Alba says the CD is ready for sale. They have finished in the studio, just finishing up details and I've heard the song. Alba's voice is gorgeous, the musicians are brill and I am in awe of what she did with my poem!

Last November, I was finally fit enough to begin marketing my book in a more concerted effort. I am pleased to say it has been added to the shelves of the inimitable Tattered Cover in Denver; the independent bookstore owned by the woman who refused to let the FBI access to her database of customers and their purchases AND won her case in court. This is a real coup for a small publisher like myself and I am pleased as punch. (It will not show in their online search as it is tied into their biggest distributor, but one may call and ask for it, as it will be in their store database.)

Just wanted to share that with you and say, thanks, again to all who have supported me, esp. to PeterT for starting the Thought for the Day threads from which it came.

Had a nice write-up and thought I'd share it with you all, though they missed the updated info on the email addy and website:-):

Wind Words of Wyoming" by Kat LaFrance

After the author's mother and dog, her two best "sounding boards," died, Kat LaFrance struggled to continue writing.

But with the help of others via the Internet, she wrote the brief essays, stories and poems on nature, spirituality, people and pets featured in this book.

LaFrance grew up in Wyoming and Colorado. In her acknowledgement, she said uses her words to "express my passion for Earth Mother and her Beings, justice and metaphysics."

She noted that without being able to write, her "voice" of expression would be limited. From her perspective, the author looks at Wyoming weather, landscapes, seasons and more.

LaFrance encourages her readers to hold memories of loved ones close to their heart and also to be open to any incidents that bring more to the forefront.

She also focuses on her loved ones, friends, pets and others who have influenced and touched her life.

"Wind Words of Wyoming" is published by MindfullSpoken Press, which can be accessed through the Internet at mindfullspoken@yahoo.com.

That's a photo I took up on Boysen Peak in Wyoming, up on the Wind River Reservation where whitehides don't usually get to go. I did a test run at a recent book fair, selling greeting cards with that photo and a couple of others from WY on them. They turned out to be pretty popular. I got this book for my aunt, who spent her formative years near Casper.
She recently passed away and the book came back to me.. she loved Wyo.
and requested a song about it on her death bed, I sang Bill Staines' Sweet Wyoming Home for her!

Someone anonymously sent me Kat's book as a surprise. Autographed too. Thank you. I had a copy but passed it on to my sister-in-law who needed to read it. Now I have my own again.
Bless you, kat.
Bless you anonymous donor.

Wow, that got there fast, Sins! How come it takes a slow boat to China to get from here to Cape Cod and it can get to you on the Monday after the Saturday I sent it?!

Oh, yeah, and nanner, nanner...I know who bought it for you!**bg**

That one you gave to your s-i-l? If it doesn't have the ISBN on the back, in teeny-tiny print, it MAY be a collector's item one day, bringing in untold millions on eBay as a "first ever!" **BSEG**

Thanks, Anonymous and Sins!

Heya'll,

I am working on releasing this book through Amazon, too, which requires new write-ups for their sales marketing, etc. stuff. I hate trying to write what a publisher would write on the back of a book to get you to read it. I have used some quotes by some dear Mudcatters who have read it, including Art Thieme, JenEllen, and Jean Ritchie, to pull together a "blurb." Would those of you who are so inclined, give me your opinion of it. Would it spark your interest? Thanks a bunch! Here 'tis (rough draft!):

WindWords of Wyoming was written to be dog-eared, have its passages highlighted, and fall open to your favorite page every time.

Written whilst Kat lived in Wyoming, everyday life is re-invented in this collection in a most joyous way: how to let go, how to make peace with both life and death, how much fun it can be just to let Nature be a part of your life.

Reminiscent of Anne Morrow Lindberg's books, Kat makes the colours of the land of the American West as vivid as any reality-based laser photo. In a grand way, she and Lewis and Clark's journals, praise and describe the same special land mass--the American West. They found it when it was pristine---and Kat has beamed her light on the beauty that still remains.

In WindWords of Wyoming, Kat's words sing, and the song is one reflecting a great inner stillness and peace...it makes us listeners slow down- stop, and take time for the beauty in small things around us, to appreciate the usual and the ordinary-miracles nonetheless.

My sincere thanks to those mentioned for permission to use their quotes. I hope they do not mind the liberty I took in shortening them up some. Most of the wording is still theirs.:-)

Thanks, my friends. CreateSpace sent me a proof, yesterday, so it will be exciting to see it. Thanks, again, to Will Fly for helping with the cover art, etc.!

Have started a blog about the Second Edition. (Need to add "share me" icons, etc. to it, but I've had enough of editing the site for today!:-)

P.S. Meant to say, I will be moving the blog to a different site, but at least it's a start.:-)

Kat, I don't know where the hell I've been but I never noticed this post and I deeply apologize. When I came back a few days ago I seen this thread and told myself that as soon as I can get some time I will get to it. Well I just finished reading every post (77 so far.)and going to all the links that were mentioned.
I would p.m you on a few things but that is not possible right now. I still can't believe that this thread was started back in 2004.
I am a little unclear as to the way of ordering it. I don't have pay/Pal but have master card. Or I could send you a personal check.

My grandson, Morgan, is "helping" me with my marketing. He suggested a contest. The first person to answer the following, correctly, wins a free copy of my book:

A man went to California and he left on Friday. How did he do it?

(P.S., He's adamant that's the way it goes. I *think* it is supposed to say he went there on Friday and arrived on the same Friday.:-)

Morgan is seven, isn't he?

I told a joke on the radio today, for my local organic gardening guru after he discovered that the armadillos had tunneled into his yard over near the bamboo where he couldn't see the hole. I told him I had a joke with an armadillo, my only Aggie (Texas A&M) joke:

How many Aggies does it take to eat an armadillo?

A: Two. One to eat it and one to watch for cars.

Good luck in getting it formatted, Kat!

All because of Mudcat and the Thought for the Day threads. Thanks, again, Max and PeterT and the rest of you for your support. And, WillFly for his help with redoing the cover! Next up, Prairie Child!

Just wanted to let UK members know, it is available at amazon.co.uk, now.

Also, if anyone who has read it, either the old print version or the e-book, and would like to leave a comment or review at any of the online places, but esp. amazon, I would REALLY appreciate it. Word of mouth remains the most powerful, successful way to garner interest and, hoped for sales.

Thanks, very much!
