BS: I'm going to Jamaica!

The Mister and I are going to spend a week at the Braco resort, starting April 19. I've been to the islands, a long time ago, but never to Jamaica. I have heard not to drink the water, and not to leave the resort. Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

Kim C

Drive on the left. I don't know why you shouldn't leave the resort!! Some of the most beautiful places in Jamaica are away from the resorts. I've swum in mountain streams there, as well as dived off of cliffs into the sea (a little hard on the neck muscles!) and the only thing I would suggest is to be courteous with people, even if they look unusual or have intimidating hairdos.

'Course I was there a long time ago, too.

You should rent "The Harder They Come" (1973) I saw Jimmy Cliff a little while ago doing the Fantastic Plastic People. He's a love.

intimidating hairdos?
i recommend getting
your hair corn rowed!
I did when i was in the caribbean
and it was a trip!
rasta reggae culture and music often
focusses on peace, love and unity.
This would be a concept to support,
I should think! why avoid it?
Not to leave the resort?
preposturous!
I am sure you can find more there...

this site has a nice song..

Soome of the most interesting thing i found
in the islands were the houses and gardens
of the residents there, the farmer's market,
the cocoa, coconut, ginger plantations, and
the many spices grown there. I was on Antigua,
Dominica, St. Lucia, Guadaloupe, St. Barths,

this was on one of the pages i found:
Over 252 species of birds can be found in Jamaica?
Of these, 27 are found nowhere else, including the
national bird – the streamer-tailed Hummingbird
or Doctor Bird.

There are botanical gardens, plantations, museums,
animal sanctuary, flower forest, grotto caves, and
Bob Marley historical sites and so much more to see
and do.

I certainly would urge you to go beyond the resort compound. But be careful in terms of watching out for anything you are carrying such as a camera, a purse or wallot. And please don't walk anywhere alone at night. These are general concerns that extend to many wonderful places to visit in the West Indies, not to mention New York City and San Francisco.

Cheerily,

I don't think I'll have to be driving. And our friend mentioned a possible side trip to some falls. Anyway I'm looking forward to it.

My husband was there last year, briefly. He was told to travel only in groups at night, to be careful especially in the cities, and to find out what parts of town to avoid. It's not only robbery in Jamaica, unfortunately it's robbery with violence. Sorry for the downer, but better to know ahead of time, right?

Take taxis--worth the money, especially at night. But PLEASE,see more than the resort. The falls are spectacular, Rick's Cafe in Negril is worth the trip for the sunset and swimming/diving. The beach at Negril is awesome, too. Try and avoid Kingston, and of course, be careful, but a little common sense should keep you in good standing.

I was there 18 years ago and went into the hills with a woodcarver I had met. Rastafarian central and an interesting cultural experience, and I also took a moped through the slums of Montego Bay--both without incident. I don't know if I'd do either today, and certainly don't recommend either activity to you two. Nevertheless, don't let fear and other folks' stories keep you from seeing the beautiful island! Enjoy!

By all means do the Dunn's River falls. But, in a group.
Avoid the "Romantic boat ride" up the river to a Jamaican meal and music. What a ripoff! The canoe was a barge loaded with drunken Germans, the meal was good, but the music really sucked. None of the instruments were in tune, and the band sounded like they had never seen each other before.

We drove from Negril to the falls, and we got waved over by one enterprising fellow at one point who wanted us to understand that our destination was closed because someone had died there and we should go to some othe rplace he had in mind. Fortunately we just thnaked him and decided he was working an angle, even if we didn't know what it was. The falls were open and no such incident had occurred.

For the most part the people we met were warm and decent, if poor. But there's always someone with an angle. So be alert! And enjoy!

Kim, there are so many things listed here as you can see........So much to worry uver and worry about.....So much to either do or not do.......This is all highly confusing of course and if you miss a point made, it could result in tragic circumstances and a ruined vacation.

Let me suggest this. I have been to Jamaica on numerous occasions and my best advice to you is, don't go. Why don't you and the Mister go to the mule pull down in Columbia and send me your tickets to Jamaica? Remember that as a founding partner in LFPS, Layabouts-At-Large, I can assure you that you will get the best in relaxation from your Jamaica ticket money. I guarantee that I won't do jack-shit and I'll be doing nothing with gusto. BTW, send money for a sailboat for me to take out for a day or two. I have the number for Hagrands right here and I'll call them so I can get their nicely aging 37 foot Nautor Swan for a couple of day sails.
