I've spent hors upon hours trying to find the lyrics for the "Angels and Cigarettes" album from Eliza Carthy, and I've found nothing. If anyone out there has the lyrics to even one or two of these songs, I'd love to have them.

Track names are as follows:
1. Whispers Of Summer
2. Train Song
3. Beautiful Girl
4. Whole
5. Poor Little Me
6. Company Of Men
7. Perfect
8. Wild Wood
9. Breathe
10. Fuse

Suteishi - not meaning to be a smart-arse here (honest!) but, if you spent 'hours upon hours trying to find the lyrics', why not just listen to the CD and write them down from there? That's how I get virtually all of the lyrics I need for stuff I play.

Suteishi may not be a native English speaker. And I can assure you that even for someone who has no difficulties at all reading English, transcribing lyrics can remain extremely difficult.

Suteishi, bookmark this page and look there every couple of months. My guess is, these lyrics will eventually be found on that site.

But the lyrics are on the CD booklet so transcribing from the CD is not a problem.

I assume therefore that either Suteishi has a non UK version of the album which may have different packaging, or somone has copied it. If the latter then I'd suggest buying the CD if you like it so much and give some support to the artist.

Damn, did it again.

Not only support the artist but one of the few record labels that has a conscience and puts out really worthwhile material by worthwhile artists. Topic is the oldest (perhaps second oldest) indpendent label in the world 70 years plus I believe and has always supported it's artists even though any profits cvan be quite small and in some cases
non existent.

Let's hear it for Topic, not forgetting similar US labels such as County, Rounder, Arhoolie etc. DON'T confuse them with the
so called "music industry giants".

I much prefer Eliza's RED RICE. I've listened to it a zillion times. I own Angels and Cig's but think I've only listened to it once. Not that anyone asked my opinion, but there it is.

Hootenanny,

'Angels and Cigarettes' was released by Warner Bros. not Topic.

Black Walnut,

I've listened to it more than once, but I'd agree that it's her weakest album. Mind you, I do applaud the fact that she wasn't afraid to try something different.

I was able to find this one probably because it's the only song on the album that Eliza Carthy didn't write:

WILD WOOD (Paul Weller)

You have to like a song that includes the line "beautiful people are boring!" followed by a big orchestral swell. I think the album's great. Can see how it would grate one though.

I got the lyrics from the CD booklet ...

Ed,

Darn right, I goofed, I'd forgotten that little blip in her career.

Like many good performers one of the majors likes what they see (sales/cash)lures them away, asks/persuades them to make recordings so different to those which have brought them a mild amount of success and then wonder why they can't sell millions and drops them.
Fortunately Ms Carthy did return to the label most in sympathy with what she does.

"Folkies" BEWARE OF THE MAJORS.

When Eliza Carthy signed with Warner Brothers she insisted on a specific clause in her contract that permitted her to continue to work and record with the family. It was just an experimental step in another direction. She never 'left' Topic. Doesn't mean she'll stop experimenting.

Sorry Countess

But while she had a contract with Warner she was unable to record for Topic other than as part of the family.
She returned to Topic after splitting with Warner.

Actually, it's not at all strange that we haven't heard from Suteishi. I think a lot of newbies post a request and expect an answer right away, and if they don't get it, they quit looking. Or maybe they don't know how to find a thread again after it disappears from the main forum page.

I think that you're probably right Jim.

There are also many people who can't be bothered to say thanks. I've answered hundreds of requests for information over the years, but only about 40% thank me. This happens even when I send an email.

Yes, it annoys me, but I've learned to accept that most people are selfish and rude.

Well, hey, all Suteishi got from us is a scolding. The scolding was deserved, I think - but I see no need for us to receive thanks for it. The Warner Brothers Angels & Cigarettes is the only Eliza Carthy album I own, and I have to say it was a disappointment.
There's great photo art on the front and back covers of the CD, though. What's the city in the photo on the back of the CD box???

Just so Suteishi gets a tidbit, here's Train Song. This discography links to lyrics of may of Eliza's recordings, but not Angels and Cigarettes.

I don't think suteishi got a scolding Joe, just plenty of advice as to where the lyrics were, on the CD booklet.

I even suggested that it was possible that suteishi had a non UK version of the CD with different packaging so may not have had the lyrics. No response from suteishi to confirm one way or the other could be for any of the reasons mentioned above.

If suteishi took the comments as a scolding, then maybe they were if it was a "pirated" (for want of a better word) copy of the album that so impressed him/her (?). In which case the suggestion that buying the CD would solve the lyrics problem and support the artist was reasonable.

Hey, we are in the business of providing lyrics at this site. Should we scold everybody who asks for lyrics when they could buy the album?

No harm in explaining things from an artist's point of view, Jim. Might make 'em realise that performers like to eat sometimes too.

Jim

The point is that the Lyrics are Eliza's compositions and her copyright. It's not like traditional, public domain material and only EC herself should be able to agree to them being posted here, which she may well do but its her choice.

As I said Suteishi wasn't being scolded but was "told" where they were readily available. I'm frequently amazed at the amount of times people post here with gushing comments about performances and songs, as if they are the greatest fans, and request lyrics that any "fan" should already have when they are vaialable on the CD the poster appears to be gushing over.

I don't see what problem you have Jim in us pointing out to the poster where the song lyrics are.

What makes the difference for me is this:

If someone would ask for the lyrics to one single song I'd guess she has taped one song she liked from a CD and is now looking for the lyrics. I'd provide the lyrics (I can't in this case, BTW) and wouldn't tell her to buy a whole CD to get the lyrics to one single song (though I personally did that more than once, actually).

But to ask for the lyrics for all songs from a whole CD is a bit bold.
