BS: Peanut butter & ?? sandwiches

19 Apr 04 - 07:30 AM (#1165071)
Subject: BS: Peanut butter & ?? sandwiches
From: Helen

Hi all,

I had yet another conversation today about the joys of peanut butter sandwiches with various combinations of other ingredients.

It struck me how many of these info-sharing peanut-butter-celebration conversations I have had in my life, and because Mudcat is a haven of diversity, especially when it comes to food, I thought I'd ask (yet another) "what is your favourite" question.

So, what is your favourite ingredient(s) which you put on sandwiches with peanut butter.

My all-out favourite combination is peanut butter and lettuce - especially your common or garden old fashioned lettuce, crispy, crunchy lettuce.

After that there is:
pb & honey
pb & jam
pb & tomato slices
pb & celery & sultanas

For my taste it has to be crunchy pb.

Have we done this topic before? I know someone (Susan/WYSIWYG maybe) recommended pb/hot dog/browned fried onions in another thread. Haven't tried that yet.

My husband staunchly refuses to try pb & lettuce sandwiches. I tell him he doesn't know what he is missing, but it doesn't sway his "skepticaemic" resolve.

Someone I knew a long time ago was listening to a conversation among a few people about pb-&-? sandwiches and she said: "Don't you like peanut butter? You seem to need to disguise the taste."

Helen

Being vegan, I'm always looking for variations in sandwiches

Try peanut butter and soy sauce. Unusual but great.

I also like peanut butter and peach when its in season

Dairylea cream cheese blends well with peanut butter, but my favourite was always the yolk of a boiled egg - at the point where it is set, but not yet hard, mashed with enough peanut butter to bind it all together. Put it in a soft white bread roll.
Quack!

1. fresh bread with lotsa' butter, a tiny scrape of Vegemite & lotsa' crunchy PB (yummy yum, a childhood treat)

2. PB & Tahini & dates & banana (& optional honey) sandos on thick barley bread, available in a wonderful vegetarian take-away shop. On the odd accasion that I forget my lunch they are my normal buy, & are very yummy.

Thanks for the good ideas in the other posts.

sandra (looking forward to more ideas!!)

(ps. I make my own PB - just whack the roasted peanuts with red skins in the blender on coffee bean speed & grind them down. I tip the crushed peanuts in a bowl & add some oil cos the blender can't crush them enough to extract the oil as the fancy machines do in the shop or factory.

Bovril.

Chicken (with meat in sandwiches, or stirred into gravy for proper meal).

Cheese (I have been known to spread it on slices of cheese, without the assistance of bread). Cheddar is good, but Grandma Singleton's Tasty Lancashire is best. Americans will have to make do with whatever plastic passes for cheese over there - so far as I could see in Michigan, there's nothing worthy of the name.

Come to that, I'm not so keen on American peanut butter either. Best in Britain IMHO is Duerr's. British types tend to have more salt and less sugar.

Peanut butter and mustard. To cut through the earthy taste of the peanut butter, you need a spare, sharp tasting mustard with no 'earthy' flavour. French's is the best.

Peanut Butter on a rice cake with banana and honey...Yummmm!
Peanut Butter straight from the jar with a big spoon...Yummmm!
Peanut Butter and any kind of Jam...Yummmm!

Okay, here's the deal, I NEVER had peanut butter at home. Never. My mother was a wonderful cook, but she didn't like anything remotely sweet, and I guess peanut butter was in that catagory. Not until I went away to camp and found the peanut butter and jelly table that was provided for campers who didn't like whatever was being served (this was an enlightened camp, bless em) and were given the choice of making their own sandwiches, was I introduced to this heavenly substance.

Coming later to peanut butter means I am making up for lost time. Just writing this will send me to the cupboard for another peanut butter fix (my second of the day).

But I do prefer crunchy, which no one seems to be mentioning. There are definite preferential rifts on this, I assure you..xx..e

we;'ve had two dogs who both LOVED peranut butter - both would beg for it in the same way - by using the normal "begging" styles PLUS imitating the roof-of-mouth-licking motion they would undergo after receiving the PB.

(they were both convinced that if they raised their heads far enough and stuck their tongues out far enough they would be able to lick it off the roof of their mouths in one go.)

I've a preference for 'real' peanut butter. Our local grocery has a peanut mill that mooshes to your preference, but has nothing in it other than the peanuts. It's the best. That said:
PB and real butter (no margarine, REAL butter)
PB and bologna (the more nitrites the better)
PB with raisins and ruffled potato chips
and a recent favourite: a sandwich made from PB cookies and vanilla ice cream (hey, it's still a sandwich!)

No one has yet mentioned a staple of my childhood, the peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich, affectionately known as the Fluffer-Nutter.

Here's a good one:
Spread one slice bread with PB
Spread the other with cranberry sauce
On the PB slice arrange chunks or slices of canned pineapple
Top with the cranberry sauce slice.

Also, PB and green chile jam, or PB and jalapeno jelly.

A PB and tabasco sandwich folded over is good in a pinch.

Thai peanut sauce in a pinch.

Depending on desired quantity:
Good sloppy squirt of barbecue sauce or as much as you want to make
PB, creamy or chunky, a heaping spoonful or a big ole gob for a large batch
Five-spice powder or equivalent
Black bean sauce or soy sauce to taste, maybe a little fish sauce or a mashed anchovy

If no barbecue sauce, ketchup, cloves, brown sugar.

We carry a tube of squeeze PB in the car. Hot Chinese becomes Thai with a little PB stirred right in when the dish is served. Hide it tho-- the staff will be offended AND think you are insane, but really, their sesame sauce for cold noodle would work just as well if they could understand what you are SAYING!

Actually the "ultimate peanut butter sandwich," with just enough "tooth" to feel good as well as taste right, and just enough "juice" to keep the PB from sticking to the roof of your mouth, is with those "bread and butter" pickle slices that grandma used to make.

Dill pickles add too much of their own flavor, - that clashes with the PB. The B&B pickles just blend and bring out the best of both.

Don - Grape jelly is not widely available in the UK... I prefer my own home made sloe/blackberry/someother berry I've forgotten jam.

But I do agree that the lighter and juicier the jam/jelly, the better it is for de-clagging the roof of the mouth.

Ever seen a cat trying to lick PB off its face? Try it, it's good for a half hour of knicker wettingly funny entertainment. Cat gets a good workout, some PB and you get clean underwear.

In a bid to make two sandwiches late one night, I spread jam on one piece of bread and put corned beef on another slice of bread, leaving two slices bare of all except butter. In my confused condition, I put the wrong bits together, ending up with a bread and butter sandwich, and a corned beef and jam sandwich. Not wanting to waste food, I ate them both up and have been hooked on the latter ever since!

My daughter says this way is best:

slather a large tortilla with peanut butter (creamy)
pop in mocrowave oven for 20 seconds or so
fold over and eat while tortilla is soft and warm and peanut butter is hot and drippy
lick the excess peanut butter off your arms

She also says she would definitely advise against peanut butter/salami combination.

C.H., I'm not sure if I could chew my way through a whole peanut butter and marshmallow fluff sandwich these days, but as a child I thought they were magnificent. My other favorite, also taught to me by my grandmother, was white bread slathered with butter and white sugar, which would probably send me into some sort of glycemic shock nowadays, not to mention make my teeth ache. Didn't you ever love anything as a child that you wouldn't like now?

Make a "sandwich" of peanut butter and two ginger snaps.
Smooth or crunchy -- your choice.

On a spoon = first principles. Everything else in the pb universe comes after that.

And you have reminded me of what Mum used to do when we were kids to try to make us eat our veggies: hide a dollop of peanut butter in the middle of the mashed potato. Yum! Not that I ever needed any more encouragement to eat potatoes, of course.

Sandwiches? I thought peanut butter was for use in milkshakes.

1/2 cup crunchy peanut butter
1/2 cup Concord grape jelly or jam
2   cups vanilla ice cream
1   cup milk

Throw it in a blender and whirl it 'til it looks right. If it's too thick or thin for your taste add more milk or ice cream.

Seems others have priority on my PB'n'cheddar invention. Darn those patent laws. Of course, it can be "improved" with a thin slice of raw onion, if you're not plannign on going out later. And it has to be on a good whole wheat or grain bread (not rye).

And someone else has mentioned PB on cheese (no bread), and another has mentioned PB and salami. I've been known to nosh on a combination of these ideas when the bread cupboard is bare: A slice of cheese with a slice of good hard salami on it, topped with a generous dab of PB. Delicious. I suspect that pets would think so too, and you might get the desired animation effect as well, as they try to dispose of the PB. . . .

Cheers,

All right, hands up everyone who has read this thread and gone and eaten some peanut butter.

Me, for one. Even bought a nice big jar of it today to replace the depleted supplies.

So far the most tempting idea for me is the grated apple and pb on rice cakes. Have to try that one.

For a lower calorie treat, I really like peanut butter and two packets of Aspartame (Nutra Sweet).

The only thing peanut butter is any use whatsoever (IMHO) is to put on mouse-traps. According to Joy (a recent expert on the subject) they go mad for it.

The best culinary thing you can do is mix with marmite (and thats another thing!)

A nonbeliever in our midst. Mousetraps indeed! What a waste!

:-)

Happy mice, though.

PB and honey...already mentioned
PB and jalepeno peppers
PB and cheese..already mentioned
PB and Bacon...ditto
PB and onion
Grilled PB&J sandwiches
PB and pickles
PB and Chili...a staple!!!
PB and PB
PB and applesauce is great...thanx Pop

I would however, try to convince you not to mix a PB&J sandwich with a good Stout beer as a bedtime snack...Unless of course you need a night filled with really weird hallucinogenic dreams.

Then, of course, there is Thai Mussaman Curry, which doesn't use peanut butter, but it does use peanuts. Yum!

My grandfather loved peanut butter with a hefty dose of black pepper sprinkled on top....

Another vote for PB with mayo--I mean, Miracle Whip.

Turns out John Kerry eats a lot of peanut butter. Two PB & J sandwiches a day, prefers strawberry jelly. Also has PB on his dry whole wheat toast at breakfast. Here's a link to the article in the IHT where I learned this bit of PB trivia

Never even thought of most of these ideas, lots of research now needed.

Started last night with the store cupboard, tried (tentatively) PB on gingerbread, the hard sort like pumpernickel. It was good, just a hint of salt on top made it very good.

New, larger, belt please.

peanut butter with duck sauce - not the mostly liquid stuff that comes in the little plastic packages from the Chinese restaurants, but the stuff you buy in the stores that has a good stiff jelly-like consistancy.

also pb on graham crackers - any kind; regular, chocolate, cinnamon - with apple butter.

pb with molasses or sorghum.

my mom used to make peanut butter, mayonnaise and lettuce sandwiches...
she and my uncle loved them!

I like a nice natural jam or preserve with it (peach or starwberry or raspberry), but usually just eat it plain. All-natural when I am being good, Jif when I am not...
it's darn good on fresh rye bread, for a change from the usual...

I didn't think I would be the first to bring this up, but I can think of other things to smear a little peanut butter on besides slices of bread...(wink wink nudge nudge know what I mean? know what I mean?)

I once made cabbage rolls using brown rice, pine nuts, onions, cerery, garlic , and peanut butter for the filling.   It was a dish I invented for a vegan wedding and it went over very well.

Lyrical Lady,

The cabbage rolls sound good.

A question for the U.S. pb-ers: is jelly different to jam? In Oz jam is a thick fruity sweet gooey substance, with fruit pieces included. To make it you stew the fruit with sugar and water, and sometimes pectin to make it set (depending on the fruit) until it is a lovely gluggy consistency.

Is jelly like that but without the fruit pieces, and maybe made from the strained juices which are allowed to set?

Or are jelly and jam the same?

Helen

In the UK, jelly is made by cooking the fruit and then straining the pulp out of the liquid (without squeezing) and then boiling up the liquid with suagr until a setting point is reached. How is it made in the US?

Five-year-old Michael today thought of sprinkling his open-face peanut butter sandwich with raw rolled oats. (Today we're using natural-style PB on heavy whole wheat bread; I don't think this taste would go with very light or white bread, nor dry peanut butter.) "It's good," he said, and it is, rather; I think I'll go on to experiment with grape nut type cereal or ground flax seed on PB.
Our family likes a bowl of rolled oats, uncooked, any time of the day, with raisins, nuts, milk, water, fruit juice, frozen berries, or anything handy.
