We will be celebrating our own local heroes. Yellow Bellies. Incidentally, for those who don't know, a yellow belly is somebody born in Lincolnshire. It doesn't mean that they are chicken. Who can come up with the best version of what a Yellow Belly is? Yellow Belly stickers for the car will be given out to all true Yellow Bellies, and they might win a tank of petrol if Radio Lincolnshire spots their car with the sticker in. :-) The Market Rasen Folk Club will be held at the following venue. The local Morris side had been invited to dance at a local pub and just to try out the venue we visited there last weekend. Apart from being a bit confined, the manager seemed helpful and so we were happy to dance for them. Because we need breaks (to get the breath back) my husband Mitch was also invited to sing some English songs and I also took along my Geordie pipes, ready for a night to rival St Paddy's night. We had a few problems - the Squire wasn't back from a trip away but we expected him to arrive partway through the gig, and one of our dancers had broken her arm 2 days before but she insisted on dancing. Also 2 other regular dancers were missing but we decided to carry on anyway. When we arrived, the place was full of rather loud, drunk young men downstairs and the staff looked at us with anxiety. One of the girls was downright rude and finally someone asked us what was going on. Apparently they had a new manager who only started 2 days earlier and he knew nothing about us. But he let us go ahead anyway. We danced upstairs, where a large friendly group were having a staff evening out, dinner at the pub, and they were an appreciative audience, but space was very limited and loud shouts kept wafting up from the boys downstairs. With only limited dancers we managed 4 dances which were well received by the patrons, then Mitch and I tried to sing. By this time the meals were being brought in and our audience started talking so the songs were barely heard. I played a couple of tunes on the pipes, then a local fiddler came to join in and started playing along in the wrong key (NSPipes are in F but our music is written in G and he was following the music)! Then our Squire arrived back from his trip but he had a raging headache and couldn't dance anyway. My husband had to to pay for his drink and my requested drink of water didn't even arrive (the upstairs bar was really hot with all the hot air drifting up from below). So we decided to cut our losses and just go home. As we went downstairs, we saw that the crowd there were watching a football match on a very large screen, hence the shouts and cheers, and also, a notice said that a live band (The Kawekas) were going to be performing there until late. About four months ago I arranged with a local pub that we would hold a session for St George's Day. Yesterday afternoon the landlady told me that, since Friday nights Hertford only two turned up - as audience. Luckily I had put this on the 'Cat and had a lovely group respond and, in spite of the noise from the loclas, who clearly were not into folk, and having to ask a couple of times for the canned music to be turned down, we had a good evening. Next year I'll scout out a venue more carefully, but I AM going t do it again! |

So why when he was offered by one of our female crowd to come and sing in front of us or shut up did he shut up? and not join us? Best sight we saw on the way back was in St Albans, where we met up with a man wearing a St George type dress staggering around the path. Long live St George. See you all before next year, ie at The Bull in Barton (see Thread) but see you all again in a years time in Hertford, just somewhere else. |

I think that it could also be interesting to have a morris group and/or mummers so if anyone's got any ideas along that line I'd like to hear them. |

Hi Les, Just wanted to say that Friday night was fantastic. We were unable to get there for 8pm and now wish we had as the rest of the evening was so good. I have explained to the other members of DACAPO and there should be a few more of us there in future to support you. As for doing a floor slot can we please book a future date as I am sure you are getting booked now and also with there being 8 of us it takes some organising to get us altogether July 30th. is a good date for us, is it any good for you? How long would you like us to perform (45 minutes would be good but we will fit in with you). Oh and by the way we shall need at least 6 tickets for June 4th.
