I have a recording too. I'll transcribe it for you, if no one beats me to it. I won't be able to do it until tomorrow night though.

Geoff - there's only one way to travel over the lancashire hills...   East to West :-)

Many thanks all - we've been asked to sing it for the A.R.C. gatherings and although I've heard it a few times (in fact it was on Lancshire drift on Thursday - thanks gang!)never had the words.

Must get them added to DT as well

cheers

Remember, Lancashire used to include a fair part of the Lake District.

OVER THE LANCASHIRE HILLS

November, cold wind and the rain
The post office workers complain
Damp crowded buses go silently by
Homeward their journey again.
And at each stop old friends say farewell
And leave for the streets where they dwell
Up on the top deck Somebody sings
with thoughts far away from this place
To the halls that the great singers grace.
cho:- And those who were moved by the song
Will ca - rry their memories long
At each new dawn the melody runs
Over the Lancashire hills

Benches and bare wooden floors,
Churches with rattling doors.
The backwater streets of a grey northern town
Echoes to distant applause
And a newspaper falls in the hall
and, lying unread by the wall,
It carries five lines of a critical kind,
It won't detain you too long.
They've even spelt your name wrong. Chorus

December the night clouds come.
The day's work is over and done.
Late afternoon and it's dark by five
Rain on the bus windows run.
Home in the evening gloom.
A fire burns in the front room.
Music lies open,metronome stands,
Piano keys gathering dust,
And those window frames shake in the gust Chorus

Dropped D if you are planning a guitar accompaniment!

Regards

Dave Bennett

Heard somewhere that this song refers to Kathleen Ferrier (born near Blackburn, Lancs.)

Hmm, that seems a little unlikely, Noreen. A quick search for a biography of Kathleen Ferrier, suggest that the song has entirely different sentiments...

Many thanks Dave (I'll be done in DADGAD more than Likely) and Ed et al for your help.

Can it be added to DT?

cheers

Noreen, I've also heard that it's about Kathleen Ferrier, who was born at Higher Walton between Preston and Blackburn, but nearer to Preston! It seems to fit her story quite well. Good song anyway.

I am looking for additional lyrics / further information on a different song with a similar title. I posted this request back in March 2002 and got exactly zero replies, so I thought it might be worth re-submitting here.

Back in the late '60's or early '70's, Granada TV broadcast a programme local to the north west of England which had a theme tune with the lyrics (as far as I can remember) :

Over the hills of Lancashire the men folk once did toil
While the women sat home and waited, watching the kettle boil
Now it's the women who're out 'til four
Keeping the wolves from the family door
Sometimes they must wonder just what it's all for
In the flats of Lancashire
Sandwiched between the bingo halls
Supermarkets and factory walls
There's hardly room to wash your smalls
In the laundrettes of Lancashire

Does anyone know who the singer / songwriter was and if there are any more lyrics ?

I always thought Stuart Marson wrote this song and that he'd made it quite clear that indeed it was Ferrier, (one of my Mum's favourites) who was the subject. She was a Post Office telephonist, she got poor initial notices and her earlier hopes to be a piano teacher were sidelined once that voice made its impact - hence the front room piano keys gathering dust. I could be wrong - and should be keen to learn more!
