I posted this request back in March 2002 and got exactly zero replies, so I thought it might be worth re-submitting here. Back in the late '60's or early '70's, Granada TV broadcast a programme local to the north west of England which had a theme tune with the lyrics (as far as I can remember) : Over the hills of Lancashire the men folk once did toil While the women sat home and waited, watching the kettle boil Now it's the women who're out 'til four Keeping the wolves from the family door Sometimes they must wonder just what it's all for In the flats of Lancashire Sandwiched between the bingo halls Supermarkets and factory walls There's hardly room to wash your smalls In the laundrettes of Lancashire Does anyone know who the singer / songwriter was and if there are any more lyrics ? She was a Post Office telephonist, she got poor initial notices and her earlier hopes to be a piano teacher were sidelined once that voice made its impact - hence the front room piano keys gathering dust. I could be wrong - and should be keen to learn more! |
