Help: Famous Newfoundland Songs

I am thinking of travelling to Newfoundland this summer, and was wondering if a decent list of things to listen to beforehand might be compiled. From my limited knowledge to date, I have a few, folk songs and pop songs, but are there important (or at least ubiquitous) other songs one must know? Any suggestions appreciated:

I'se the B'y (obviously)
Squid-Jigging Ground
Tribute to Newfoundland
The Cliffs of Baccalieu
Loss of the Marion
CN Bus
Thank God We're Surrounded by Water
Aunt Martha's Sheep
Banks of Newfoundland
Jack was Every Inch a Sailor

Peter T.

Bound Down for Newfoundland

On St. Patrick's Day, the seventeenth,
From New York we set sail.
Kind fortune did favour us
With a sweet and pleasant gale,
We bore away from Americay
The wind being off the land.
With courage brave we ploughed the wave
Bound down for Newfoundland.

Our captain's name was Nelson
Just twenty years of age.
As true, as brave a sailor lad
As ever ploughed a wave,
The Eveline our brig was called
Belonging to McLean;
With courage brave we ploughed the wave
Bound down for Newfoundland.

When three days out, to our surprise,
Our captain he fell sick.
And shorthly was not able
To show himself on deck.
The fever raged, which made us fear
That death was near at hand
We bore away from Halifax
Bound down for Newfoundland.

We made the land, but knew it not
For strangers we were all;
Our captain was not able
To come on deck at all.
Then we were obliged to haul
Our brig from off the land
With laden hearts we put to sea
Bound down for Newfoundland.

All that long night we ran our brig
Till none o'clock next day.
Our captain, on the point of death,
To our record did say,
"We'll bear away for Cape Canso
Now, boys, come lend a hand
And trim your topsail to the wind
Bound down for Newfoundland."

Prison of Newfoundland is in the DT.

Ye lads and lassies of Newfoundland come listren to my sad tale,
While I relate the hardship attending St. John's jail;
And being a stranger in this land I'll do the best I can
To relate the hardship I endured in the Prison of Newfoundland.
...

Thanks, gents. Much appreciated. That lyric site looks really helpful.too. A buried question is: what would you hear if you went into a pub of an evening? (Of course, there would be pop songs, but I mean songs that everyone would know).

yours,

Peter T.

Go to the Pubs in St John's in the evenings. 15 years ago when I lived in Bay Roberts, they used to have traditional jams at Legion Club in Upper Island Cove some Saturday afternoons. If you happen on one of those it will be the highlight of your trip.

Tribute to Newfoundland?
Do you mean "Ode to Newfoundland?

How about?

Kellegrews Sworee(sp)
Sonny's Dream,
Lukey's Boat
Star of Logy Bay
Got to Get Me Moose Bye
The Old Polina

Pretty much
Anything by Buddy Wasisname, The Irish Descendants, Ryan's Fancy, Great Big Sea or Stan Rogers.

The Songs Amos listed seem good but in my 31 years on the Island, I'd never heard of them.

Thanks, Guest ~ I was just about to post the same thing. Since GEST Songs Of Newfoundland And Labrador just passed the 1100 songs mark, what better place to suggest? ;-)

Don't forget Sonny's Dream by Ron Hynes.

Any number of songs such as Black Rum and Mary Mack and lots of others made popular by Great Big Sea

If you go up to the Lyric & Knowledge Search, and enter Newfoundland, you will soon find many of these songs.

Another one was made famous by Stan Rogers, Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's by Otto Kelland. That one doesn't have Newfoundland in the file to reference it. Perhaps it should.

Anyway, hope that helps, Peter T.
