Obit: Bill Tooley

26 Apr 04 - 02:22 PM (#1171480)
Subject: Obit: Bill Tooley
From: nutty

It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of my good friend Bill Tooley.

Many will miss his presence at Folk Festivals and will remember him for his involvement over the years, with his wife Theresa, as a member of the Shellback Chorus , as part of Johnny Collin's catering establishment and as general prop-up man at the bar.

Bill was also the back-room boy and roadie for our folk group (Firm Friends) and his involvement was invaluable.

Earlier this year Bill was diagnosed with bladder cancer. We all hoped that an operation would suffice but unfortunately the cancer was too aggressive.

No funeral arrangements have been made at this point but if anyone would like to send a message to Theresa , please PM me and I will let you have her home/email address.

Bill will be sorely missed by me as a great down to earth bloke who I could have a good chat at the bar with when we both had enough folking at festivals! My sympathy goes to all who held him dear, especialy Theresa. I will pass the word at Swinton tonight and see if we can come up with a fitting tribute.

Cheers

It is with great sadness that I learn of Bill's death, please convey condolences from Ray Padgett, Johnny Booker, Nigel Deakin and all his friends in Yorkshire and Barnsley

John and me spent many hours in Bill's company at many fetsivals such as Barnsley, Cleckheaton, Fylde, Redcar/Saltburn, Holmfirth etc
he was a true character who had his own way of seeing things, many times showing great insight.

He was clearly devoted and completely supportive of Theresa in her singing, I too have always had the greatest regard for Theresa's enthusiasm in finding and singing songs.

Our collective condolences are extended to Theresa for her loss

Just gone away for 24 hours, and what a shock to come back to this sad, sad news. I was only one of so many who came to know Bill over time at the festivals, and would endorse all that's been said - he was a great bloke, a genuine character and so much of a support for Theresa. Many knew him better than I of course, but even so, personally I'll miss Bill one hell of a lot, festivals just won't be the same wi'out his distinctive presence.
I can only add my condolencies, but words just ain't sufficient are they?
Deepest sympathies - and the biggest ever hugs that I can send over the ether - to you Theresa.

Bill was a wonderful man, a great friend and a good mate. We shared many 'happy' hours sweating in the cauldron that was the 'Singing Chef' kitchen, he was a tireless if well lubricated worker when it was needed.   He had a talent for coming up with some truly memorable, if sadly unrepeatable, 'Thoughts of The Day' which were all part of the 'Singing Chef' culture.
He will be missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with Theresa.

Who will I stand at the bar and talk rubbish with now ?
A huge unfillable hole will be present at all festivals that I was priviledged to share with Bill. My thoughts are with Theresa on this sad occasion and I know that the support of the "folk family" will ease her sorrow.
Rest in peace Bill you were a true friend.
In sorrow, Piddlin Pete.

I had a long talk with Theresa today and she would like to invite all who wish to attend to one or all of the following events on Wednesday 5th May.

FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
1.45 - 2.30pm at St Georges Church, Tyldesley .... friends please meet at the Church (directions later)

approx 3pm   Interment at ....
New Manchester Woodland Cemetary, City Road, Ellenbrook, Worsley

followed by Funeral "tea" at THE LABOUR CLUB, ABBEY STREET,LEIGH

Theresa asks that there be no flowers or mourning clothes and that if people would like to make a donation that it be made to CANCER RESEARCH UK.

It would also help Theresa, with catering, if those people intending to attend the funeral could let her know (using this thread [click] would suffice)

Theresa
I am so sorry to hear about Bill so quick after we met up Tyldesley. I will never forget his wicked black sense of humour which sometimes ruffled the feathers of some people(usually the ones that deserved it). Although we seldom met except at festivals these days you know I remember the great times I had with him in the old days propping up the bar in the Half Moon. He also made the strongest home brew I have ever drunk and had the filthiest jokes I ever heard, but more than this he was one of the kindest most good-natured people I ever met, qualities sadly lacking in our world of cynicism and greed. I will miss him but will remember with great affection his love for Folk Music and for people. Hope I can make it on Wed evening to pay my respects. Janet and I are thinking about you and sending you and all your family our strength.
