BS: Punjabi

My daughter has been given the task of writing the word "WELCOME" in various languages,as part of a school project.....they will be pinned to the wall to welcome the new pupils starting later this year.

We've done OK so far, but are stuck on Punjabi? Would anyone know what it would be?

Here's a link with "greetings" in 800 languages - though all in Roman script. Three version for Punjabi, depending whether it's a Sikh, a Muslim or a Hindu talking.

"Sat siri akal" is the expression given for "Greetings".

Thanks for that..........and an interesting site, will go for Sat siri akal, which apparently is the Sikh version, only a letter or so differentiate between the three of them.

I didn't realise there were three dialects, none was specified in the assignment, so have plumped for the one at the top of the list on the translation site, in a bid not to offend anyone?

Why not write it in English. If they can't speak English then maybe the teachers should teach them.

Do you have it in Urdu?

GUEST....they can speak English very well. They are being exposed to other languages and cultures, maybe to help them develope tolerance?

Shlio....Thanks, but I imagine Urdu will be on someone elses list to do. Although I nearly had it by default, the old dear in the local sweetshop was so keen to help she made us recite hello and goodbye in Urdu before we left, many many times.

earthling,it is called divide and rule. And you are such a smug little prick for not realising it. And tell that old Paki bag behind the counter to speak English

I have a friend whose husband is from India. Many years ago, he was up here and Ocelittle, my splendidly evil feline decided to harass him. He spoke to her in Tamil. She sat down on the sofa, tucked her paws under her and was a nice cat for the rest of the evening. Apparently Tamil has that effect on animals. I'm not sure, keeping that in mind, whether you want welcome in Tamil or not.

Isn't Urdu what people in Liverpool get when they go to the barber's?
