A scary, headwrecking and masochistically enjoyable 2.5 hour PhD defense. I am now Piled Higher and Deeper.

Celebrations to continue at the Eurogathering. Right now I'm going to have a pint (of champagne).

Dear Dr Fibulacious!

Knew you could do it without problems! I shall probably be going through the same again in a few years from what I have heard this week (masochistic or what at my advanced years and in my own spare time and out of pure personal scientific curiosity (which killed the 'Catter) between music lessons, gigs and recording to boot).

xx

More like making jigsaw puzzles of the itty-bitty-bits of pots and bones found in holes in the ground and making up stories about them so nasty housing developers can't build on the land...

No but they do know what to do with old fossils Roger, and probably know all about dendrachronology too. So if you see Dr Phibes heading your way with a chain saw, I would take to the hills if I were you.

Hi all,
thank you for the good wishes.

Well, it's actually a PhD in Computer Science, but with archaeology as my main application. I've just left the Computer Science department to start post-doc work in the Archaeolgy Department. My work was on image display - working towards perceptual consistency when viewing images over a network (such as image databases over the Internet), specifically on viewing conditions and how they affect perception. It was a mad mix of techie, archaeology and psychology stuff, and I've really enjoyed working on it.

The PhD defense was pretty terrifying, but I got through it and actually started enjoying myself towards the end. There were a few drinks had last night, but I'm teaching today, so had to be restrained - I'll make up for that in Hull9.

It's mad to think it's all over - I went through some drastic changes on the way.

Right, I have to go and twist peoples' arms and see if I can make it for summer graduation (apparently I've just missed the deadline).

Fibs Mattock went in for her Viva
This girl was never a Skiver
With her well marshalled Thesis
She blew them to pieces
Of the Panel she's the sole survivor

So Fibs has achieved her great goal
Tho' from her life its taken its toll
She gained her PhD
Not covered in Mud
At a keyboard and not in a hole

And I did win at the Mudcat Eurogathering ruffle all the leftovers from excavations that didn't fit into the conventional theory:

(1) A tile from the Pharaoh's unknown third chamber with the evidence that the Egyptians have been on the moon, cleverly disguised in a pattern that at the first glance is very pretty but nothing else.
(2) Two necklaces of beads that to the unschooled glance only look like necklaces of beads when in fact they are the long suppressed proof (where's my malt?) that the Hawaiians by a clever counter- turning technique with the two laces crossing each other at the golden ratio angle could diffferentiate long before the Europeans could.
(3) A present of myrrh which to me looks like the a bit more than 2003 years old leftover from a birth present from Palestine. But I don't know what that might signify.

(Sorry about that Kate)
Wolfgang

Sssh, Wolfgang! Don't tell anyone I've been plundering! It was probably that Viking character's influence - they'll lift anything that isn't nailed down. Have you tried burning the myrrh yet? And I hope your daughter likes the fiesta beads/abacus.
