Chas Upton; what happened to?

Back in the 60s there was a very good folk singer named Chas Upton, who came from [I think] Wooton Basset. He used to sing a song which he may have written, called Silbury Hill, which I liked very much. Does anybody know where he is now?

Don't know where he is, but was he the chap who would have been a regular floor spot at The Cellar CSH, often introduced as "the Squire of Wooton Bassett"? If so I remember him but can't recall hearing of him since the 60's.

I knew Chas Upton in the early sixties when he ran a folk club in Bath. I sang there a few times. Dunno where he is now though. I believe singer Rosemary Upton, of Bradford on Avon, is a relative. Around thaat time Ted Poole of Swindon folk club bookesd 4 newcomers in a showcase evening. I was one, Chas was another, and the others were a duo from Bristol one of whom was Geoff Lucena, now boss of Saydisc Records.   I also remember seeing Jack & Margaret King at CSH around that era. Ahhh Nostaalgia......Burl

Chas. You won't believe this but my wife (number 4) played with Soltice last night, and whilst looking at links about them I found the Thread about you. Lunch in the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen was the last time that I saw you. You were haeding to the USA working for Univac. If you want to try direct e-mail try ianh-b@msn.com . It would be great to see you again. Reminiscing about the White Bear I met John Mayall and Dave Cousins recently - both still playing gigs in Brighton. Do get in touch. Ian H-B

I came on to ask the same question. I was his taxi service Bristol to Bath in 60s. I have a tape of J&M King performing there.
I met Chas at Fred Wedlock's funeral in Bristol over a year ago. Chas went to work in Denmark which explains why he went AWOL from the UK folk scene. He came back to live in Dorset where he still performs but he does not respond to e-mails from me. Hence my Google of same Q.

I don't know if he wrote Silbury Hill but it was his party piece. He made a record with it on. (I have a copy) I think he did write Silent Spring vs pesticide misuse. That was in early days of environmentalism.

While I have been writing this I see he has already responded with much the same (8/4/11) and giving a similar e-address.

Interestingly enough, I know the link is pretty much dead now, but I used to play with Chas Upton and Chris at the Langton Arms. My name is Alan Smith and we were known then as "Coopers Hoop".

We did quite a lot of gigs around the South. Sadly Chris died some years ago, but Chas has been seen recently at the Tolpuddle Martyrs do as he is there every year as I am led to believe.

I used to run the Admiral Benbow Folk Club at the Army base in Blandford Camp in Dorset. I now live in the Netherlands.
I think Chas is now in Bristol after he left Blandford.

Still going strong - gigging with my wife Sammy. The song "Silbury Hill" was recorded on an EP. One of my older brothers collected it in the sixties from a farmer that we new well, just outside Wootton Bassett.
I wrote the music for it and sang it at most gigs. As I and Fred Wedlock were pals, he would sing it and he recorded the song on an LP.
The opening song of my EP was twenty years before its time! It was called The Silent Sky and I wrote it after reading Rachel Carsons' book about the loss of habitat for wild life and the effect of chemicals. Now it is a prominent issue.
