Dougi Maclean's 'rashes'

Does anybody know if the tune DOugie MacLean used for his version of "Green Grow The Rashes" is his own or is it adapted from a trad version?

I'm recording some people for a charity CD and I've strictly specified non-copyright or original material. However one lad wants to use "rashes" with Dougie's tune, and I need to know whether I can allow it on the cd.

Ta.

Hi-

It's the traditional tune.

Yeah, but he has adapted the tune to suit himself. I'd be interested how he has credited it on the Craigie Dhu CD... anyone have a copy to hand?

If it just says "Trad" then you're off and running Mr Ken., If it says "Arrangement D. Maclean" then your wicket has become definitely sticky...

The funniest thing about that post is that you though it was funny...

There's a difference between a melody and an arrangement. And everyone adapts traditional tunes to suit themselves-- that's called the oral tradition.

It's credited on his web site as Trad. Robert Burns Arranged by Dougie MacLean

Of course the "arranged" may well simply refer to his arranged accompaniment rather than an adaptation of the Tune.

Now... that's more like it!

Dear Thomas T Rhymer

Please accept my apologies if you were offended, or indeed upset, by my admittedly flippant response to Kenny.

I won't bother apologising to Kenny because I know that he won't have been either offended or upset. But if he was, he can tell me next Wednesday. Or he can phone me. Or he can say so here.

But Thomas, I unreservedly apologise to you.

Love and Kisses

Scabby Douglas you are a hurtful swine with no regard for other people's feelings.

My self-esteem is irreparably damaged by your careless comments!

A pox upon you and your high and mighty ways!

I'm off round that new-age hairdressers in Parnie Street to get a bit of Reiki and some Hopi ear candling.

And my feet rubbed.

And some aromatherapy.

On the tune thing, I take it from this that if we put this recording on the CD and punt it for charity then we're not going to get a letter from a rcord company lawyer saying "You used our client's tune/arrangement or whatever and we want a slice of any money it makes".

I don't for an instant believe that Dougie himslf would do that, but you never know what contractual issues of ownership may be lurking out of the hands of the artiste.

I've just this moment worked out that it's just a slowed down version of the song against which I've had a mental block for forty years because they forced us to sing it at primary school pronaownnssing awl owarr vaowels corrrrectlee.

To this day I can't stand the bloody song, and since Dougie "popped itb up" it's been done to death!

It's one of those songs that should have a sweary word in the middle of the title..
