Lyr ADD: The Fairy on the Christmas Tree

Subject: The fairy on the christmas tree
From: barnacle

Another puzzler

When I was a kid, there was a Christmas song (probably played on Children's Favourite's or something - showing my age!!)

It goes ...

Every little girl would like to be the fairy on the christmas tree

and somewhere it goes on ...

Every little girl, you understand, is really queen of fairyland

It also mentions "golliwogs", which is a little un PC and probably why its popularity waned

It was sung by Gracie Fields and she has recorded it, but does anyone know the lyrics??

Cheers

Oh geez........

When I was about 7 years old (a thousand years ago now) I used to have ballet lessons. I seem to remember a concert where a troupe of us little girls sang and danced to this song, we were dressed in white tutus and waved wands.

Cheers
JennieG (still a fairy, although now aged 29 and some months - there are no numbers after 29)

There's a current CD called "Vintage Christmas Cracker", a various-artists compilation including THE FAIRY ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE sung by The Three Sisters, accompanied by the BBC Dance Orchestra, directed by Henry Hall. I think it's from around 1936. The song was written by Harry Parr-Davies and Roma Hunter. Gracie Fields also recorded it.

I got the following words from a sound sample at Barnes & Noble

Every little girl would like to be
The fairy on the Christmas tree,
Up above the party, dressed in white,
Shining in the candlelight.
Every little boy has lots of fun
With his trumpet and his gun.
Every little girl, you understand,
Is really queen of fairyland.

Following that is something about golliwogs, but I couldn't quite get the lyrics.

I may just have to go and buy the CD - which will be much to the chagrin of my hubby who cannot understand why I keep buying "such crap" for the sake of one song.

Perhaps "he just doesn't understand me"

There's also a shaggy dog story about a bit of overwork-induced tension in Santa Claus's workshop which ends up 'And that's how the fairy ended up on top of the Christmas tree'...

We don't have a fairy on the top of our tree - don't believe in fairies. Family tradition is to use a cheap, brightly painted wooden cut out (brought back from a 1960's trip to the USSR) of a worker in heroic pose, holding aloft a hammer and sickle.

Trouble is, he doesn't have the tinselly glitter of a fairy, so we usually brighten him up with one of the little red fairy lights between his legs.

The National Library of Australia has the sheet music, although images are not viewable online:

THE FAIRY ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE

Sydney: W.H. Paling & Co., c1936.

I believe you can order copies, for a price. Find the item in their catalogue, then click the "Copies direct" button at the bottom of the page.

I'm a fairy on top of the Christmas tree
Looking down as down as can be.
No one knows. No one cares. No one thinks of me.
Even if I wave my wand, there's nothing there to see.
I'm a fairy on top of the Christmas tree.
Staring down as down as can be.
I just cannot stand a bit.
I'm still a fairy on the Christmas tree.

That's wrong!!

1. I'm the fairy on top of the Christmas tree,
Looking down just to see
That all the Christmas presents are as safe as safe can be.

2. I'm the fairy on top of the Christmas tree,
Feeling sad as can be,
Cos when the presents are all gone, there's nothing left for me.

CHORUS: No one knows. No one cares. No one thinks of me.
Even if I wave my wand, there's no one there to see.

3. I'm the fairy on top of the Christmas tree,
But Christmas time is sad for me,
Cos no one ever notices the fairy on the Christmas tree.

CHORUS: No one knows. No one cares. No one thinks of me.
Even if I wave my wand, there's no one there to see.

REPEAT: I'm the fairy on top of the Christmas tree,
But Christmas time is sad for me,
Cos no one ever notices the fairy on the Christmas tree.

Don't ask! Don't dare to suggest. LOL

"If I were a fairy on a Christmas tree

Dora Bryan springs to mind, probably incorrectly. She did do 'All I want for Christmas is a Beatle' though:-)

'Every Little Girl' was written by a Great Uncle of mine who lived in Neath, South Wales - Harry Parr Davies. He was Gracie Fields' pianist and wrote a number of her 'big hits', including 'Wish me Luck as You Wave Me Goddbye'' He also wrote 'Pedro The fisherman' and 'There'll Always Be An England'. My Grandfather was a cousin of his (his name was Frank Horace Parr and was born in Briton Ferry in circa 1908 (and died in 1975).
He also wrote for Jack Buchanan and Anna Neagle among others.
Sadly Harry Parr Davies developed a serious drink problem which was the cause of his early demise, much to the shame of my family at the time apparently. During his career he rubbed shoulders with the Hoolywood set, there being numerous photos of him with the stars of the day.

I actually have the sheet music for this song. The correct title is "THE ANGEL ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE". Lyric by Roma Campbell Hunter; Music by Harry Parr-Davies.

It's a copy I got from someone else half a million years ago, but the copy is clear enough to read.

Ev'ry little girl would like to be
The angel on the Christmas tree,
Up above the party dressed in white,
Shining in the candle light.

Ev'ry little boy has lots of fun –
With his trumpet and his gun.
Ev'ry little girl you understand,
Is really Queen of Fairyland.

Black golliwoggs,
Wee woolly dogs,
Big, beautiful bears;
Most any boy
Loves any toy,
No little girl cares.

There's a little secret she must keep,
That she can fly when she's asleep;
Ev'ry little girl would like to be
The angel on the Christmas tree.

I'll take a risk and post my email address. Contact me and I'll try to send you a copy of this since it's all on one page.   c.jillplay@yahoo.com

Not long ago and far away, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip…but there were problems everywhere.
Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves didn't produce the toys as fast as the regular ones, so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule.
Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was coming to visit. This stressed Santa even more.
When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out…heaven knows where to. More Stress!
Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys.
Totally frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey. When he went to the cupboard, he found the elves had hid the liquor and there was nothing to drink.
In his frustration, he dropped the coffee pot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw it was made from. Just then the doorbell rang and Santa cussed on his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree. The angel said: "Where would you like me to put this tree Santa?"

And this my friend is how the little angel came to be on top of the Christmas tree.

Lawrence Welk and his Champagne Music, with vocalist Sara Berner, recorded THE ANGEL ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE, on a 78-rpm record (Coral 61081) in 1953. Parr-Davies and Campbell-Hunter are credited as songwriters.

All the other recordings I have been able to identify seem to originate in the UK. They are by George Melachrino and His Orchestra, Harry Hall & The BBC Dance Orchestra, Nigel Ogden, and Gracie Fields. They always call it THE FAIRY ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE, and credit the same writers. Sheet music copies printed in Australia and the UK also use the title THE FAIRY ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE.

The Angel and the Christmas Tree
(Melody: All I want for Christmas is a Beatle)

The story of how the angel came to be on the top of the Christmas tree.

Now, Christmas is a time to be so happy,

But at Santa's the elves were going on strike,

Mrs. Claus had burned the cookies, there was no Christmas tree,

And that's something Santa really doesn't like.

And all of Santa's reindeer had been drinking,
They got hammered really early in the day.
They decided on a whim, to go out for a spin
But they crashed into a pole, and wrecked the sleigh…

"I've got to fly around the world" yelled Santa,
"Bringing gifts to every little girl and boy
What am I to do? The kids will all be blue,
I don't know if each one will get a toy…

"Oh, nothing's going right today," cried Santa.
The toys aren't even in the bloomin' sack.
And I sent that little angel out to find a Christmas tree,
I wonder if she's ever coming back?"

He was getting really angry now, was Santa,
When the little angel burst in, full of glee.
He just glared at her, with her scrawny Douglas fir,
As she said "Santa, where should I stick your tree?"

THE FAIRY ON THE CHRISTMAS TREE
As sung by Gracie Fields, 1939.

§ Ev'ry little girl would like to be
The fairy on the Christmas tree,
Up above the party, dressed in white,
Shining in the candle light.

Every little boy has lots of fun,
With his trumpet and his gun.
Every little girl, you understand,
Is really queen of Fairy Land.

Big golliwogs,
Wee woolly dogs,
Big beautiful bears—
Most any boy
Loves any toy.
No little girl cares.

There's a little secret she must keep:
That she can fly when she's asleep.
Every little girl would like to be
The fairy on the Christmas tree. §§

Autumn days are over, past, and very soon
Mother turns the lights up in the afternoon.
Children talk of Christmas. Brother wonders what
Santy Claus will put into the stocking on his cot.
Sister may be silent but she thinks an awful lot.

[Repeat § to §§.]

leeneia, I had a Headmaster once, quite an elderly man, who confessed to me that he dreamt he 'flew' every night. He saw all the rooftops of Norwich, all the streets and buildings from above. He controlled his flight by extending his arms and swooping around. His wife was often driven to waking him up! He'd served in the RAF as a young man, and I wondered if it was a relic from his flying days, although he was never a pilot.
