08 May 04 - 02:20 PM (#1181222) Subject: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Les in Chorlton Ok I am getting old and creaky. I want to take our caravan to Whitby Folk Festival. Does anybody know which is the best camp site within walking distance of the town? |

08 May 04 - 02:37 PM (#1181231) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Geoff the Duck Stoupes Cross is on the Abbey Plain beyond the road which goes up from the East side to the Abbey. It is a bit of a walk plus the 199 steps thrown in. If you are in town it is possible to get a taxi back to the site. The other camp site is on the West side heading out towards Sandsend. Once again not that close to town. It is closer to the Spa and Metropole if you are intending to finish your evenings thereabouts. The festival also organises its own camping, but I'm not sure what the arrangements or locations for them will be. Quack! GtD. |

08 May 04 - 02:39 PM (#1181232) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: McGrath of Harlow The festival has a couple of camp sites in the town, and they aren't that far from where the action is. The more convenient one is supposed to be for performers and stewards. But they can be flexible about that. |

08 May 04 - 03:14 PM (#1181259) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Rasener Just picked this up from the website for the Whitby Folk Festival. Hope it helps. General Information for Campers Camping At Whitby Folk Week We have two campsites because it is not possible to cater for everyone who wishes to camp on any one of the available sites. We therefore have what we feel is a sensible and fair divide in that we offer those spending the most (season ticket holders) the site nearest to the majority of the event venues. The sites are on school playing fields and have water, toilets and showers. There is morning to lunchtime catering on the "main" site for certain but we cannot guarantee this on the "secondary" site although there is a mobile food facility adjacent to the site during the day. The secondary site is 1.25 miles from the town centre (uphill returning) and there is a daytime / early evening bus service into the town. Anyone booking for either Camping only or Day Tickets and camping would not have access to the main campsite although if they wished to use the catering facility they would be welcome to do so but that would entail a rather circuitous journey as the two sites are in different directions from the town centre! As both sites are situated on school playing fields we have to obey rules laid down by the school and the school governors in order to be able to use them. There are no facilities for the emptying of caravan / camper toilet units. The main site does not allow vehicle movement on or off the site between 10pm and 8am. The secondary site does not allow pets. Both sites will not be open until 3.30pm at the earliest on the Friday before the festival and must be vacated by 2.00pm on the Saturday after the festival. 08 May 04 - 03:31 PM (#1181269) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: McGrath of Harlow The main site is an easy enough stroll, insofar as there are any easy strolls in Whitby. That's the one I mentioned as being performers - they've clearly changed the rules. I think going to Whitby and not getting a season ticket and staying for the whole week is missing out on something pretty special. |

08 May 04 - 04:45 PM (#1181310) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: LesB I second Mc Grath's comment about buying a ticket, besides, if they don't sell enough tickets, no Festival. (See the Sidmouth thread) The 'Main' festival camp site is usually Stakesby School and is fairly handy for things, the one reserved for performers is usually the Community College, (where they have the Moor & Coast Festival). The 'secondary' camp site is usually Eskdale School, which is a fair way out on the other side of the river. I havn't been on the Eskdale site myself but it is being used for the International Sword Spectacular at the Spring Bank Hol, so I will know after that. Les |

09 May 04 - 05:31 AM (#1181616) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Grampus We always camp at Sandfield House Farm (caravans only), towards Sandsend as mentioned by Geoff. It is a fairly level walk into Whitby until you get to the Whalebones. www.vagary.co.uk/sandfieldhousefarm Expensive - yes, but good and convenient G |

10 May 04 - 03:37 PM (#1182502) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Red and White Rabbit Last year there were mixed reports about the festival campsites and how good they were ( sorry Malcolm but its true - thats me never working at Whitby again!) If you are happy with festival camping and porta showers you should be fine though. Malcolm also has a team of stewards to keep an eye on things. Sandfield House is excellent if you have a caravan but unless you are aiming for Taxis home its quite a treck after a session - you can walk back along the promenade and then up a track to the site - can be muddy in wet weather though and you would need to book now to get a place as it is very busy - Raggytash knows more about the Stoupes Cross site than I - you could PM him for info |

11 May 04 - 12:01 PM (#1182962) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: GUEST,Raggytash Stoupes Cross is an OK caampsite for every week of the year except Folk Week, the facilities are not extensive enough to cope with all the people who camp, many of whom don't pay, they just pile on, cos their mates got a key to the bogs, been there done that got the t shirt ......... I'm not having a go ......... however I wouldn't recommend them, noisy at night with drunks, during the day with radio's and mornings with kids ............ if someone's a grumpy old git like me, they'll be bald by Tuesday with pulling their hair out ......... if they have any to start with ! |

11 May 04 - 01:32 PM (#1183014) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: GUEST,spike If your thinking about Eskdale school, be warned that I was at that site last year, and after the first night, awoke to find 6 bikers and a transit van of another 4 people had erected their tents 6 inches from my caravans tow hitch, and being as someone had parked a car across the back of the caravan (fair enough) it meant I had to come down a 10ft bank and then back up, to talk to my friends on the side of my van! there then followed a night of drunken swearing, farting and general lager fuelled behaviour,(bit like the tap and spile when Rays been in all day!!) untill 4 a.m. A steward finally came and asked them to be quiet, and for some reason, they thought I was to blame obviously, cos the next day, a kind gent came up to me and pointed out that the jockey wheel was loose on the van. Yep the bastards had stolen the locking device, and thrown it down the field. Great, couldn't raise the van up to attach it to the landy when it was time to go! Now at this point, I should explain that I am 6' 4" weigh 19st and am built like a brick out-house, I am also a biker of some 27 years! My first reaction was to go and kick some butt, but being loathe to destroy people nowdays, went AGAIN to the stewards, and told them what was about to occur. They came and had another word, which made the situation even worse. Anyway, they were booked over the weekend, and there they stayed untill itwas time for them to go. The steward told me they had taken the numbers og their vehicles and would not allow them to book the next year!!!!! You have been warned! |

12 May 04 - 05:26 PM (#1184184) Subject: RE: Camping at Whitby Festival From: Les in Chorlton I think we have camped on most of those above and beyond the Abbey steps, starting about 2 or 3 miles out, I seem to remember a young John Kirkpatrick on the same site, ending up ten years later and 6 months pregnant on a site at the top of the steps. Always a great place to be |
