11 Oct 98 - 07:23 PM (#41249) Subject: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Rosie As of this posting the Folklore Society of Greater Washington(D.C.) getaway week-end is going strong. Since I was able to attend only one day (Saturday) as a "Day-tripper" this report will undoubtably be premature... However, what I saw and heard and blissfully enjoyed on Saturday was some supreme talent. It makes one wonder: what separates these performers from superstars? It certainly is not the talent...the folks that I had the priveledge to see and hear could fill any large theater... At the risk of offending some whose names will not get listed at this time I will mention here some of the folks who have me believing in God again, as their musical gift had to come from heaven above. Mike Agranoff, from New Jersey; Saul Broudy, from PA; Bob Clayton, from MD; Sacred Harp talents Tim Slattery and Miriam Kilmer from VA. All did workshops and mini-concerts and also performed at the concert on Saturday night. More names need to go on record here. Someone else can pick up now and report on Sunday's events. Congratulations to the FSGW on an excellent effort. |
11 Oct 98 - 11:42 PM (#41258) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Roger Himler Let me be a scurrilous name dropper. I "daytripped" down to the Getaway in my fancy new Mudcat T-shirt (see your main forum page to purchase your own). I was quickly greeted by my first name by someone whom I did not recognize. It was Dick Greenhaus from the Mudcat. I also met Bill D., Bruce O., Ferrara, and Susan from the DT. I had a wonderful time. Heard some songs I recognized from the Forum. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and it was grand to connect in the flesh with some fellow Mudcatters. Roger in Baltimore |
12 Oct 98 - 04:10 PM (#41364) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Bill D what a nice thing to find posted in the Mudcat as I stagger out of bed on Monday...(sleep?? at the Getaway??..too much going on!!)I am not sure I even officially met Rosie, but I met Roger and heard HIM sing..and in his short time among us, he endeared himself with some great music..and closed out the Sunday night concert! (I took some pictures of various Mudcatters, and, with their permission, I'll post them on a Web page when I get them developed...I like having faces with the names..) |

12 Oct 98 - 07:02 PM (#41387) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Roger Himler Bill D., I saw you sneaking around with a camera. If you have a picture, please feel free to post it. At the Drinking Songs workshop someone sang the song about the Dun Cow burning down (someone hollered Mac Intyre!). It was here on the Mudcat somewhere. There were also two drinking songs (????) sung about Ovaltine (my what a sedate bunch!) Roger in Baltimore |

12 Oct 98 - 08:28 PM (#41409) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Bill D *grin*...you don't have to drink exactly what you sing...that was Heather Wood who started the Ovaltine bit....(but, yes, we were missing a few of the rowdier voices of yesteryear..) |
13 Oct 98 - 08:12 AM (#41504) Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway XXXIV From: Ferrara Rosie ... Sorry I missed you ... Or maybe I didn't miss you and old age has put another gap in my memory.... Yes, it was a blissful weekend. Fine weather, fine singing, small pockets of music continuing far into the night. The variety of musical styles and talent was staggering. We had late-night sings where the accompaniment included guitars, fiddles, a viola, and a full-sized Celtic harp. It works amazingly well. It was really special to have visitors from Mudcat. The out of town musicians who join us each year are part of the Getaway's magic. We do this every year, around Columbus Day weekend. Next year we may move to a less expensive location. Either way, I do hope we'll get to meet some more Mudcatters next year. - Rita Ferrara |
