Lyr Req: Fast Freight (Terry Gilkyson)

Subject: what is this song?
From: BSEEDKRATZ-aol.com

This song has been bouncing around in my head all day--all I can remember is

"clickety-clack, clickety-clack,
the wheels all sing to the railroad track,
that if you go you can't come back,
if you go you can't come back,
if you go-o-o-o, you can't come back."

I did a bracketed search on the digitrad with both "clickety-clack, clickety-clack" and "if you go, you can't come back" with no results. Anyone help me out on this? (I think this song came up in the threads a couple of weeks back--but it just hit me today). --seed

Bseed,

Another Kingston Trio song (you must be so old Seed).

As I listen for the whistle,
Lie awake and wait,
Wish the railroad didn't run so near.
For the rattle and the clatter,
Of that old fast freight,
Keeps on playing music in my ear.

'Tis the only verse I can recall.

Ah yes, My great grandmother use to sing this song to me. This if from memory (mine, not hers) but it's close to the real thing.

FAST FREIGHT

Every night I listen, wonder if it's late,
Wish the railroad didn't run so near,
For the rattle and the clack of that old Fast Freight,
Keeps a-makin' music in my ears.

Chorus:
Go bum again, go bum again.
......... Clickity clack, clickity clack,
The wheels are singing to the rail road track,
If you go you can't come back,
If you go you can't come back,
If you go, you can't....come....back.

I wouldn't give a nickel for the bum I use to be,
'Work as hard as any man in town.
I've got a pretty girl, she thinks the world of me,
A man would be a fool to let her down.

Every night I listen, wonder if it's late.
In my dreams I'm ridin' on that train.
And the rattle and the clack of that old fast freight,
Says "Thank the Lord I'm just a bum again."

Zorro,

I just spent 20 minutes transposing the verses from a Kingston Trio recording. How dare you beat me to the thread! Pretty soon, you'll be like Joe Offer and have women chasing you on the 'Cat

The song was recorded by the Calypsonians on February 10, 1957. They eventually evolved into the Kingston Trio They learned the song from a group called the Easy Riders. It was written by Terry Gilkyson. It appeared on the Kingston Trio's first album appropriately called "The Kingston Trio on Capital T/DT 996 released on June 2, 1958.

Sorry Roger in Baltimore. Mudcatters have given me so many lyrics that when I have an opportunity to repay I jump at it. I didn't know about the Trio's history. Very interesting.

Big Mick,

If you think you're old, you should go see the Kingston Trio now. Nick's had some hip surgery and takes a while to get from the stage wings to the microphone. Bob Shane seems to recall some of the chords. They have a "young guy" with them to provide some real musical accompaniment.

I was sorely disappointed. Their contemporaries, P, P, & M seem to be holding up better.

Oh, yes, and I'm that old, too.

Old they may be, but God be good to 'em for all they did for "folk" music. And PP&M just seem to keep going, Thank God.

Seed,

I believe you are right: "the rattle and the clack" should be "the rattle and the clatter". At least in the Calypsonian's version.
