I only know this song from the 1991 charity compilation "All Through The Year" and that via an unsolicited tape that someone made me, and I can't find it now... I'd love to hear it again. Jennifer |
12 May 04 - 06:15 PM (#1184207) Subject: Lyr Add: BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES (Shaw, Minor) From: Susanne (skw) BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES (words by Rev. Knowles Shaw (1834-1878) Tune by George Minor) Chorus: Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves Bringing in the sheaves, bringing in the sheaves We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves Sowing in the morning, sowing seeds of kindness Sowing in the noontide and the dewy eve Waiting for the harvest and the time of reaping We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves Sowing in the sunshine, sowing in the shadows Fearing neither clouds nor winter's chilling breeze By and by the harvest and the labored end We shall come rejoicing bringing in the sheaves Going forth with weeping, sowing for the master Tho' the loss sustains our spirit often grieves When our weeping's over, He will bid us welcome We shall come rejoicing, bringing in the sheaves Has anyone got more info on the song? Why it was written, or if there's a story behind it? |
12 May 04 - 07:02 PM (#1184242) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: Snuffy Wrong song, Suzanne. Jim Boyes wrote his own words and uses a different tune. (but I prefer the old version) |
12 May 04 - 07:13 PM (#1184248) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: Q (Frank Staplin) Psalm 126.6, "He who goes out weeping," etc. Is this old hymn, quoted above by Susanne, what is wanted here? See Cyberhymnal, with midi: Bringing He wrote the words for a number of other hymns. Why was it written? I guess he would have said: "The Lord made me do it." Does the Boyes version differ? |

13 May 04 - 01:51 AM (#1184453) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: GUEST,jennifer Typing hastily listening to a tape labelled "Ian's tape"... the chorus follows the pattern "Bringing in the sheaves, we're bringing in the sheaves, (last line of preceding verse)" Though it's way past harvest time Some still toil and work and ????? Corn still stands in rank and line And defies us all We can see it in our past Blood will out and joy will battle Though we work in different ways we're bringing in the sheaves (Chorus) Though we started from the land Some of us do roam abroad The hand upon the gliding plough is not for everyone Changing seasons help us see Those who hear a different drummer Though not in one harmony, we're bringing in the sheaves (Chorus) What lay dormant in the soil Is wakened by the kiss of summer So the fruits of yesteryear become the years new corn Every stem has at its core, part of those who went before In turn they will be kept in store by bringing the sheaves (Chorus) In conclusion bear in mind What example has begun What today you do in kind has power for everyone True strong aims will pass along To your daughters and your sons So may they in years to come be bringing in the sheaves (Chorus) |

13 May 04 - 10:11 AM (#1184723) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: GUEST,Georgina Boyes I've just checked with the songwriter to make sure I got it correct. The first two lines of 'Bringing in the Sheaves' is - "Though it's way past harvest time Souls still toil and waggons rattle..." All the rest of Jennifer's transcription is spot on. Thanks for your kind comments, which I'll pass on to Jim. If you'd like to buy either "Out' the Blue" or "Funny Old World" or any No Masters album, they're available via www.nomasters.co.uk. 13 May 04 - 01:03 PM (#1184873) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: Kevin Sheils Hi Georgina The end of the first verse didn't ring true in Jennifer's post Blood will out and joy will battle so I checked Jim's CD notes and they state Blood will out and join the battle Which makes more sense. Mind you I've learnt that you can't trust CD notes (even the authors) as they may be what was written but not what was sung and I haven't checked Jim's singing. There are a few other minor differences like "your" and "our" but CBS may well sing it slightly different to Jim solo. |
13 May 04 - 06:59 PM (#1185151) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: bringing in the sheaves jim boyes From: Susanne (skw) Thanks for posting the correct lyrics, Jennifer et al. I posted what I found in my database but hadn't compared it to Jim's recording. (Any little mistakes will usually be corrected by diligent Mudcatters in no time.) I like the song very much, and CBS in general. |
