They're related to shrimp and crawdads, so just take the wings and legs off and throw 'em in hot fat. A little salt and cayenne.. Or when you've fried 'em and they've cooled, dip 'em in melted chocolate. Lots of beer helps. Seamus |

It's not kind to deep fry them without chopping off their heads quickly first. Joy |

17 May 04 - 11:08 PM (#1187566) Subject: RE: BS: Yum... Cicada Omlettes... From: GUEST,Ron Davies Well, it turns out this song fits the topic--discusses several benefits to eating cicadas, including an unexpected one. Came out around the time of the last visitation--a rap song, yet. Cicada Serenade--by the Pheremones They got big orange eyes they can barely focus Some people call'em 17-year locust But that's the wrong data The name is cicada And they're here now but they won't be here later They got 4 wings but they ain't supposed to fly They just come out the ground, have sex and die But I can dig their rig--I like their style Cause they may go quick but they go with a smile Check it out (cicada noise) Cicada serenade Check it out (cicada noise) Cicada serenade Cicadas on the sidewalk, cicadas on the ground Place looked like a little tiny Jonestown Now I hate to see anything go to waste And I was wondering how a cicada might taste Cicada, potata, it sounds the same To let 'em go to waste would be a crying shame So I got a couple hundred of' em, took 'em inside Put some ketchup on 'em and I ate 'em French-fried I ate 'em all up without hesitatin' The next thing you know I was hallucinatin' Freakin' out (cicada noise) Cicada serenade Freakin' out (cicada noise) Cicada serenade I was out of my mind My head was in a fog Next thing you know I was sick as a dog My friends came over, said "Let's get high." I said "No way" so they said "Bye bye" I don't need no lovely, no reefer, no cocaine Cause I still got them cicadas buzzin' round in my brain So eat your cicadas with every snack Cause they can also help you say no to crack Bugs, not drugs |

09 Apr 13 - 03:20 PM (#3501070) Subject: RE: BS: Yum... Cicada Omelettes... From: beardedbruce In the eastern half of the United States, periodical cicadas come up out of the ground every 17 years when the ground warms up to 64°F. They are expected to be seen here in the Washington, DC area in May of 2013. They are large insects, about an inch and a half long, with black bodies, red eyes and delicate wings. There are far too many to count. You see them everywhere--on the sidewalk, on the trees, on the porch, on the street. Cicadas of the same life cycle are known collectively as a single "brood". There are 12 broods of 17-year cicadas. As a result, it is possible to find cicadas in almost any year by traveling to the appropriate location. The group expected in the capital region this spring, known as Brood 2, are the offspring of cicadas last seen in 1996. ....... Specific groups of periodical cicadas are called "Broods." Entomologists have devised a chart that documents the emergence of these groups. There are twelve "Broods" that appear in the northeastern part of the United States in different years. This year, the lucky area is Brood X. Brood X refers to certain parts of fifteen states (DE, GA, IL, IN, KY, MD, MI, NC, NJ, NY, OH, PA, TN, VA, WVA) and Washington DC. These states will witness the emergence of the 17-year periodical cicadas sometime around May or June of 2004. ........ http://www.cicadamania.com/where.html |

09 Apr 13 - 03:26 PM (#3501074) Subject: RE: BS: Yum... Cicada Omelettes... From: Ron Davies Yup, you got it. This is Brood II, 2004 was Brood X. Looks like 2004 had the largest range of any of the 17-year cicadas. But this year will be no slouch in range--second on the list. The return of the cicadas is great news as far as I'm concerned. And I'm not even a bird. |
