The most interesting parts are the between-songs shots of Istanbul and other parts of Turkey, and the large number of gyrating nubiles accompanying the singers. Otherwise it's absolute dross made semi-bearable by Wogan's humour. There are amateur and professional songwriters in the folk world who throw away better songs than the tripe they insult us with in the Eurovision. So why is it on my TV right now? "Why didn't people vote for your song?" he was asked. "Because it was crap" he replied cheerfully. And he was right. On the other hand the winner, "Ruslana", the Ukrainian Xena lookalike concert party, were a cheerful, energetic and entertaining mob. And the Serbia-Macedonian lot who did pretty well, I thought were rather good. Both of them would go down great at Cambridge Folk Festival. It's a shame most of the songs were rubbish, but most of the rubbish didn't in fact do too well. Including the UK entry. Here's a link to the official site - it's got all the lyrics, though no sound files. As for the voting for friends and neighbours, remember neighbours aren't the same thing as friends. In fact it often means quite the opposite. The interesting thing here was that in the former Yugoslavian republics, you had people who were killing each other only a few years ago voting for each other's songs, and that's encouraging. And along the same lines this time there were even some Irish votes for the UK, which wouldn't have happened a few years ago. And what makes that kind of thing mean something is that it's not a jury, it's ordinary people phoning in. |

I thought it was worth watching just to see those amazing "continuity announcers". Like a few others who have posted, I have always loved the Eurovision Song Contest, going right back to the days of Katie Boyle and Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson. I wanted Turkey to win - First time I had seen a political (anti-war) protest on the Eurovision - Even it it was just the lead singer shouting 'Peace' and flashing the CND symbols on the inside of his Jacket. Nice to see that punk has finaly caught on in Turkey as well:-) The French bald woman on stilts was very odd. Some of the songs, particulary the Balkan ones, did have an odd 'folksy' feel about them. And since when did Bill Wheelan start writing for the Turkish interval act? Presumably since Turkish dancing became stangely akin too Irish... Eating and drinking my way round Europe helped as well. Chorizo for Spain, Guiness for Ireland, Kabanos for Poland, a good Balkan Merlot for the old friends club etc. etc. Must get better organised for next year and get the 'true spirit' of each country as well;-0 Cheers DtG |

The Serbia Montegnegro one is rather beautiful. It's possible to imagine how a contest like this could be really rather special. Every now and the there's an entry that shows how it could be done - and quite often they do pretty well in the voting, and not just from neighbours. |

The best bit for me was when the two presenters tried switching to an outside broadcast collegue, the poor woman was quite unaware they were calling her, so she carried on just looking around, and scratching/picking her nose, looking bored as hell. |
