BS: Eurovision Contest

I hate this thing.
So how come my 13 year old daughter wants to watch it.
Its appalling.
What do you folkies feel about it?

It lost most of its charme when everyone got allowed to sing in whatever language they want.

It was much more interesting when each singer had to sing in the language (or one of the languages) of his country.

It is bizarrely fascinating in the same fashion as the prurient obsession with Diana's car wreck. Glitzy and glam, gritty and dirty, no talent, no substance.

Perfect Murdoch-style entertainment for the masses.

It's on at the moment. The most interesting parts are the between-songs shots of Istanbul and other parts of Turkey, and the large number of gyrating nubiles accompanying the singers. Otherwise it's absolute dross made semi-bearable by Wogan's humour. There are amateur and professional songwriters in the folk world who throw away better songs than the tripe they insult us with in the Eurovision. So why is it on my TV right now? I'm a masochist. :0)

Those corrupt bastards are 'voting' now. What a joke.

Complete and utter farce. Everyone voting for their friends and neighbours, even if the song's slightly worse than an elephant farting through a megaphone. It's time this tripe was done away with and something more worthwhile put on in its place, like a two-hour educational film about the drying properties of fence-paint.

Strollin' you are so humerous.
I am watching this absolute crap, it makes you want to puke.
Tony Blair is to blame for our absolutely abismal result.
It's a vote against Britain and a vote for Islam. ooooops am I aloud to say that.

It's over now, thank goodness.

Not as many predictable key changes into the last choruses, as in previous years.

Small mercies?

I LIKE Eurovision!! I think it's one of the few nights where the whole of Europe can get together and take the mick out of themselves!

Well done Ukraine! See you in Kiev next year!

I liked the quote gven by the Irish singer after the show was over. "Why didn't people vote for your song?" he was asked. "Because it was crap" he replied cheerfully. And he was right.

On the other hand the winner, "Ruslana", the Ukrainian Xena lookalike concert party, were a cheerful, energetic and entertaining mob. And the Serbia-Macedonian lot who did pretty well, I thought were rather good. Both of them would go down great at Cambridge Folk Festival.

It's a shame most of the songs were rubbish, but most of the rubbish didn't in fact do too well. Including the UK entry.

Here's a link to the official site - it's got all the lyrics, though no sound files.

As for the voting for friends and neighbours, remember neighbours aren't the same thing as friends. In fact it often means quite the opposite. The interesting thing here was that in the former Yugoslavian republics, you had people who were killing each other only a few years ago voting for each other's songs, and that's encouraging. And along the same lines this time there were even some Irish votes for the UK, which wouldn't have happened a few years ago. And what makes that kind of thing mean something is that it's not a jury, it's ordinary people phoning in.

The Westlife lad writes crap songs? I'm shocked. Actually, ever since 'Lord of the Dance' I thought Eurovision was merely a Murdoch style platform for trashy 'Celtic' music.

Remember the Karen Matheson/Donald Shaw debacle on behalf of Brittany?

SO embarrassed for them.

Now that I remember, if it weren't for the seasonal difference, that Capercaillie Eurovision performance made me think I was having a flashback to their equally wretched Hogmanay/New Years Celtic Crapola Celebrations.

"...As for the voting for friends and neighbours, ... ...voting for each other's songs, and that's encouraging..."

Call me a cynical ba*d, but, as most of these seem to be the result of telephone votes, and as no state is allowed to vote for itself, I have the sneaking feeling that some of it may be a matter of phoning in to the neighbour's TV station and voting for one's own side. TV doesn't stop at the borders and they're just a phone call away....

Xena and her entourage of sweaty, muscle-bound neanderthals put on the best performance by several million light-years, and I confess that her gyrations gave rise to a gentle stirring and an agreeable warmth in me loins, but it was a shitty song in a long boring list of shitty songs. Why don't they scrap the whole charade and put two or three hours of folk music instead? (Don't answer that, I wuz just joshin', I know folk's not a majority interest and therefore doesn't exist as far as Auntie's concerned).

McGrath's got a good point about former enemies voting for one another, a thought which had occurred to me whilst the 'voting' was under way, but it just makes for farce and destroys any vestige of legitimacy the 'Contest' ever had.

But I'll bet I'm glued to it next year (LOL) :0) :0)

Best by far, I thought, was the German entry: *classy* laid-back, jazzy music, and they were actually playing (unlike most of the acts!)They put all the rest of the entries in the shade.

I thought it was worth watching just to see those amazing "continuity announcers". Like a few others who have posted, I have always loved the Eurovision Song Contest, going right back to the days of Katie Boyle and Pearl Carr & Teddy Johnson. It's what got me hooked on foreign languages from the age of four. I agree: it was far better when everyone had to sing in their own native language. Long may the contest continue !

The great thing about the whole tawdry spectacle used to be that it delayed "Match of the Day" until after closing time. Schedules have changed, and I am at a loss to understand what use, if any it serves. I think it may be popular with cosmetics manufacturers.

I think it's one of the few nights where the whole of Europe can get together and take the mick out of themselves!

You should have been at Barton upon Humber, April 30 to May 2. It wasn't the whole of Europe, admittedly, but we made music ourselves, and it was not trashy.

Having seen a part of this rubbish some 20 years ago I zapped away and never looked at it again but took to folk music. What they are selling as folk music at Eurovision isn't a little bit folk, only folklike (volkstümlich in German), and that's the worst you can encounter.

In the many debates about the meaning of folk music, Mudcatters divide pretty much in half: between those who go for the old definition(oral/collective/communal function etc), and the revisionists who like to let in modern singer song-writers (culminating in the small handful of "all music is folk music" horse-people).
But strangely, not a lot of the more inclusive Mudcatters eem anxious to claim Eurovision songs as the new folk. Now, why would this be?

The real joy of Eurovision is putting the subtitles on and watching the mess they make of trying to keep up with Wogan. They had fun with the 'silver-suited son of the fyords'

Picked the winner and second twice in a row now - must be atuned somewhere.

Because, as the Irish lad said, of his own song, they were crap. Mostly.

Folk music: Traditional or modern music in this style.
Folk song: A song of popular or traditional origin or style.

The Oxford English Dictionary.

Both sides are right in there own way, new or old music.

I enjoyed it - the crappy bits were so crappy they were good! And I think there were more gems than usual. I wanted Turkey to win - First time I had seen a political (anti-war) protest on the Eurovision - Even it it was just the lead singer shouting 'Peace' and flashing the CND symbols on the inside of his Jacket. Nice to see that punk has finaly caught on in Turkey as well:-)

The French bald woman on stilts was very odd. Some of the songs, particulary the Balkan ones, did have an odd 'folksy' feel about them. And since when did Bill Wheelan start writing for the Turkish interval act? Presumably since Turkish dancing became stangely akin too Irish...

Eating and drinking my way round Europe helped as well. Chorizo for Spain, Guiness for Ireland, Kabanos for Poland, a good Balkan Merlot for the old friends club etc. etc. Must get better organised for next year and get the 'true spirit' of each country as well;-0

Cheers

Why does Wogan refer to himself as belonging to the United Kingdom? I know he is paid to present the UK's interest but he's still Irish (or have I missed something?)

LOL don't know anything about this Eurovision thing but sounds rather like American Idol (which is an embarassment in it's own right and yet strangely fascinating)

Lord of the Dance...*shivers* I still despise Micheal Fartley for corrupting that lovely old Appalachian hymn like that. How dare he...(apologies in advance for any of those who are true fans of the guy ;O)

Nah - not like American Idol, Pogo. These guys are in the main already professional. Although at times you do wonder...

You can get all the gory details here at Radio 2. All the videos are on and yoy can even listen to Ken Bruce's show, although I don't know if he is as good as Wogan!

Look at the Ukraine video to see the winners. Good ones to watch are France is a must see for the sheer strangeness and Turkey was my favourite!

Enjoy

Here's the links to the page with videos of all of them - which tend to be more polished than the stage performances. The Serbia Montegnegro one is rather beautiful.

It's possible to imagine how a contest like this could be really rather special. Every now and the there's an entry that shows how it could be done - and quite often they do pretty well in the voting, and not just from neighbours.

I watched a few moments of this years show but never saw any act that made me want to carry on watching.

The best bit for me was when the two presenters tried switching to an outside broadcast collegue, the poor woman was quite unaware they were calling her, so she carried on just looking around, and scratching/picking her nose, looking bored as hell.

I know some of the music is musically BS (though not all) - but this thread really should count as a music one.

Another one definitely worth having a look-listen on that video link I gave is the one from Estonia.
