Yes! Glad to hear it isn't just on my end. (I did use Ad-Aware and find a spyware program I got rid of, that speeded up everything else, but Mudcat is still slow).

Maybe someone oughtta check with Max... Heck, he mightta been overpowered by killer ants who are now working on Mudcat Central. Heck, them killer anys might just take it down in a few hours, 'er days....

So, if therre are any Catters out there who have any confessions to make better not wait. Do it now!!!

Okay, I'll go first... Man, geeze of pete, my 9th grade science teacher was a hottie and I wanted to marry her, or shack up, 'er anything in between as long as involved sex... Sho nuff...

Whew, I'm glad to have that out before the big crash...

Yeah, Bobert, but I went to a high school taught by the FSCs -- the Christian Brothers. Weren't NONE of them I had a crush on!

Been slow here in Idaho, too, and I'm running a T-1 at work and the equivalent on cable at home. I wonder if Max has been having a ping flood or DOS attack leveled against the 'Cat.

Still very slow here - has been for the last 24 hours, and I've got ADSL too. Recently recovered from an attack of computer viruses, so feeling pretty paranoid, but everything else seems to be okay.

I was surprised it was not mentioned on Mudcat Help, and was really wondering if it was me. I'm glad it's not, but I wonder what it is?

It's so danged slow that it's driving me nuts! I may consider taking my inane contributions elsewhere if this keeps up. Yes, that's a threat, not a promise. :-)

Bobert, I had this art teacher in junior high that was gorgeous. Ay-yi-yi! Miss Delavan. I had a lot of fantasies about her. Then she went and married some guy named Mr Pinkney! Can you imagine? What a terrible loss. I was devastated. I am still devastated. It's simply not right! You took away my dream, Pinkney, and I want it back!!!!!! ARGH!

Now I will hit "submit" and wait, and wait, and wait, and wait...for this darned post to actually get somewhere.

Good idea--run right over to and yell at the people who said mean things about your beloved Max? That is just SOOOO high school in group of you!

Those of you who use Mudcat as your clubhouse will never get it. It isn't just that so many of the personalities here are a bore. The main thing is, the website sucks. The search engine sucks, and Mudcat use is dropping because of it. And the supposed "music knowledge" in the forum is a joke.

Wake up and smell the coffee, people. When over 80% of websites actually load, much less load faster than yours, your days are numbered. The website is irrelevant. The DigiTrad is pretty worthless at this point, because no one ever did anything to clean it up, do a decent cataloguing of it, and manage it like a real archive.

Compared to other music lyric sites this one looks like a 15 year old did it.

Oh! The emotional devastation at these revelations from the anonymous one who deigns to drop in here from time to time. I think it likely that the entire membership of Mudcat will shortly commit suicide en masse, having come to the realization that the tremendous importance they place on Mudcat has been a paltry delusion. Heh!

Naw...ignorance really is bliss. We're having fun in our 15 year old sandbox.

Hey, love, we don't come here because it's the best, we don't come here because there are or are not better forums, we just come here because we've been here a lot before and we're used to it. Period. There is no reason or justification necessary for things like this to occur. If you want to piss and moan about something, why not get mad about Howard Stern or the Aryan Nation or cross-breeding of Pekingeses or something else like that that really matters?

Guest 18 May 04 - 11:06 AM needs to practice his freedom will and go elsewhere if he doesn't like Mudcat as it is.

I predict the similar flame wars at Alexa (whose software I booted out of my computer the other day) as occur here at Mudcat. But Amazon allows the removal of the mean-spirited stuff. Personal attacks aren't tolerated if they're called to someone's attention.

When I click on a link I often get "Server Not Found". Since M$ arbitrarily limits the number of connections to a server at one time, that could be the problem. This place is just too popular for the server to cope with.

The apparently independent, and negative, rating from Alexa (80-something per cent of sites are faster) reminded me that I somewhere saw reference to the Digital Tradition a year or so ago - acknowledging it as a fine resource but bemoaning that it is now housed on such an unreliable site (ie Mudcat).

Is there no possibility that a university or other academic institution with proper resources might take on the DT? Catters are obviously and understandably forebearing about any shortcomings that interrupt the flow of the forum, but surely it would be desirable that researchers, performers, etc could access the DT whenever they needed to do so.

Subject: RE: BS: Is it me or is the Catbox gummed up?...
From: Bill D

Max has hinted at several ideas for better reliability, but it seems to me it is hard to achieve a situation where the hardware AND the management remain under his control. This is not something we want to be farmed out to someone with lots of computing power, but no idea of the history and 'feel' for what it is.

Ideally, I'd love to see someone big simply fund it, and hire Max & Jeff to run it full time....but folkies are not a major item on the radar of most philanthropic organizations these days. Besides-- we don't keep out mouths shut about the world..*grin*

Subject: RE: BS: Is it me or is the Catbox gummed up?...
From: The Fooles Troupe

Actually, while the DT in and of itself is all very well and good, much more musical information is contained in the Forum Threads. And often times an 'offhand' comment, even in a BS thread, can be very illuminating musically.

I would be against separating the two.

My only real substantial complaint (musical) is about how long it takes for stuff to migrate from the threads into the DT, but I won't go into that, as that has been well and truly dealt with elsewhere, and I am not making a complaint, just registering my only real 'concern' about the Mudcat.

There are enough "Folk Police" here...

This place may be slow, but I've been on and off the site at least several times a week for nearly 5 years and rarely is the site down - and then, just for short periods. I doubt that too many people are not getting to the site.

Don - becoming an expert on Minesweeper means you're going to be getting a call from Halliburton - something about Afghanistan and mines. . .

Bid on something in the auction (part of the proceeds go to the Mudcat).

Buy a t-shirt (or 10).

Stick a twenty in his garter.

FWIW
I do my site on a shoestring and need no equipment other than a PC so as I see it: whatever the 'Cat wants to provide is a bonus. Thanx Max.

Anyone tried to post to BBC message boards lately - don't bother - I think there is a netwide push to change a few things and that is burdening/blocking some places.

Amazon doesn't care for attack "reviews." They've removed the personal attacks on Max posted by (who else) anonymous "guests." It takes a few days for the derogatory stuff to clear the system, but it's history. This doesn't mean all negative reviews are gone, but the personal attacks are gone.

I have a guitar that Jan Burda and Anne Hills swear was one of yours. Worse than that, they claim you traded it in for a 9-string Alvarez Yairi, of all things. The guitar is a Gurian Jumbo Rosewood. I bought it from Jan in 1985. Any truth to this story? Mike Ritchey
