18 May 04 - 05:49 PM (#1187999) Subject: Songs about growing up? From: black walnut I have a friend (no really, a friend, not me!) who has been asked to sing 2 or 3 songs with guitar at a bar mitzvah which is happening only one week from this coming Saturday. Mr. Friend needs ideas. What would be some popular songs that would be appropriate for the occasion? He's thinking along the lines of Cat Stevens, PeterPaul&Mary, that sort of thing. Songs about growing up - child to teenager..... ~b.w. (who tried to find a relevant thread but couldn't find one) |

18 May 04 - 09:04 PM (#1188138) Subject: RE: Songs about growing up? From: YorkshireYankee Try Turn Around A few of its words are about a girl/woman, but it would be easy enough to change them to suit a boy/man... There's Sunrise Sunset... although the 2nd verse is about a wedding, so not quite so appropriate; maybe just the first verse? Or maybe adapt the 2nd verse a bit to fit a bar mitzvah? Perhaps something like: He looks so confident and handsome All that we might have dreamed, and more Now we can see his own dreams growing, strong and sure May he have much to give the future May he know happiness and love May he be blessèd by the Lord above Sabbath Prayer (also from Fiddler on the Roof) also seems very apt for the occasion, although it's not about growing up. (It also would need *slight* adjusting to make it appropriate for a young man.) Good luck! YY |

(LOL) BW - Try 'The Boy Becomes The Man' by Allan Taylor - not only a brilliant piece of writing (as any dad who hears it will testify) but, in this case, wholly appropriate. Johnny :0) |

21 May 04 - 05:58 AM (#1190585) Subject: RE: Songs about growing up? From: GUEST,Philippa From thread re. "Politically incorrect national anthems" The Child's Song We'll sing a song, a children's song, With cheering rousing chorus, As round our parents' hearths we throng, A safe roof warm o'er us; Impatient for our coming lives, Awaiting what the mornings give, Here in the silence of the night, We'll chant a children's song. Chorus: Children are we whose lives will flower in Ireland; Dreaming to free the green land of our homes. We're ... okay, the lines above are more about being young than about growing up; I found them while looking for Murray McLauchlin'sChild's song (better known from the recording by Tom Rush) is also at this additional Child's song thread Charlie McGettigan's Feet of a Dancer (popularised by Maura O'Connell) for a Bat mitvah, maybe Peggy Seeger's Little Girl Child, though it might have to be adapted slightly for a big girl |

21 May 04 - 06:57 AM (#1190617) Subject: RE: Songs about growing up? From: GUEST,Ellenpoly Here's a song that used to be on Television to open a children's show called "Jim Stewart and the Glovables". I always found it wonderful..xx..e Be kind to your parents, : Though they don't deserve it, : Remember that "grownup" : Is a difficult stage of life. : They're apt to be nervous, : And over-excited : Confused by the daily storm and strife. : Just keep in mind : Though it sounds odd I know. . . : Most parents once were children : Long ago....(incredible!!) : So treat them with patience : And sweet understanding, : In spite of the foolish things they do. : Some day you may wake up : And find you're a parent, too. The above is a song called "Be kind to your parents" and the author's last name is Rome. You can find a recording of it by Pete Seeger on his "For kids and just plain folks" CD |
