Review: Finest Kind on tour

I enjoyed one of those rare evenings last weekend: a concert that had me smiling and singing all the way through. The Canadian trio Finest Kind (Ian Robb, Ann Downey and Shelly Posen)were terrific at the uNi Coffeehouse in Springfield, MA. They're justly famous for their harmonies, and their scope of musical interests is mind boggling: they presented a Sussex drinking song, a Marty Robbins "hurting song", a Peter Bellamy setting of a Kipling poem, a Bruce Phillips cowboy song, a Dylan anthem, original material and so on and on for two very full sets. Tasteful instrumentation, skin-tightening harmonies, appropriate background and introductions -- geez, I guess it was a perfect show.

If they are coming to a venue near you, and you like your folk music impeccably presented, then run, don't walk, to get your tickets. They are one of those acts which make me scratch my head and wonder why our culture is so warped that the likes of Janet Jackson makes millions for purveying dreck while Finest Kind keeps their day jobs so they can afford to tour twice a year.

"skin-tightening harmonies"--now there is an angle for the adverts--
removes wrinkles, trims off inches, shed pounds, save on Botox!

They are also really nice people as well.   I had the chance to spend some time with each of them off stage and really enjoyed their company.    The nicest line I have heard about them was by Ian's wife.   We sat together during a workshop at Home Country Folk Festival in London Ontario.    Afterwards she said to me "after all these years, I still enjoy hearing Ian sing"   How nice.

I absolutely LOVE all 3 of my Finest Kind CDs and just wish they'd visit Down Under (or more specifically : sunny Queensland!!) - SOON!!!

They even come across in their recordings as warm, friendly people!!
And all are TOP singers (AND harmonizers!!)

HIGHLY recommended!

Cheers! R-J

[an aside: I liked the Finest Kind CD covers so much that I used the same artist for my CD.]

Finest Kind is excellent....great songs, singers, stories, people.

Does anyone know where this current tour is taking them, besides Springfield, MA?

I think it was just a weekendd drive down from Ottawa. Old Songs Concert Series (Voorheeesville NY, near Albany - a lovely concert in the great acoustics of Old Songs "new" building), the aforementioned U'n'I, and Burlington VT on the way home.
