Tech: ANyone else having problems with Hotmail

19 May 04 - 02:14 PM (#1188661)
Subject: Tech: Anyone else having problems with Hotmail
From: Edain

I haven't been able to access my hotmail inbox for several days now. Everytime I try it takes my username and password then says -
---
The .NET Passport service is currently unavailable at this Web site for one of these reasons:

• The site may contain an error or be experiencing a problem that affects the .NET Passport service.
• The site may not be an official .NET Passport-participating site.

You can:

• Return to this site later and try to sign in or register again.
• Sign in or register for a .NET Passport at another .NET Passport participating site. .NET Passport Site Directory

---
I can still sign into MSN messanger fine and that happily tells me I have 39 e-mails waiting for me, but I can't actually get at them.

Any ideas?

Yes, I am having problems with Hotmail. I get a lot of spam from Hotmail addresses.

My hotmail account is working fine, both directly and via Outlook. And the spam situation is much improved these days.

Mine's working fine.

No problems with mine but then I use a little utility that gets the mail for me and presents it to Outlook as a POP email account. I don't actually have to log into hotmail to read it.

If the ".NET Passport Site Directory" is a link, you should be able to go to any ".NET Passport" site and log in to your Passport i.d.. The theory is that .NET Passport lets you log in once and other Passport sites will recognize that you're id has been confirmed good.

Although the Passport site links they offer are likely to be pretty much interchangeable, the possibility - when there's a problem at the site you get info from - that the links may be compromised suggest that you should pick "somebody you know" and confirm that the link sent you where it said it would. If you want to be truly paranoid, you can identify a site, and then do your own manual entry of the site address, to bypass any possible "reroute" of the link.

My hotmail connection doesn't seem to have any problems now, but in the past I've run into demands from hotmail that I log in again, even when my Passport login was already valid. They do seem to have had some trouble with the concept.

Tried the .NET passport link and got his helpful message

The .NET Passport service offers streamlined sign-in at a wide range of Web sites and services.

We have discontinued our Site Directory, but you'll know when you can use your Passport to make sign-in easier. Just look for the .NET Passport Sign In button!

Tried going in via the link in MSN Messanger, tired from hotmail.com and MSN.co.uk, even tried on Mozilla as well as IE, same result. I;m thinking of e-mail microsoft

Just checked my mail no problem.

Cluin: are you sure that your spam is from Hotmail accounts? I have only ever found 2 messages of the hundreds that I have checked and reported over the years that came from Hotmail. Lots had forged Hotmail (or Yahoo or AOL) addresses, but that is a different matter entirely.

I can't vouch for MSN.uk, but on the MSN.com (US) version there's a button at the top right that say "Sign in .NET." (Very fine print.) If you hover your mouse over it, you'll see that it's actually the "Passport" signin.

You should be able to "sign in" to your Passport i.d. at any site that has a similar button, usually even if you're not a "member" at that site. Once you've activated your Passport i.d., you may be able to go back to your usual Hotmail connection.

As mentioned above, though, I have had the problem of Hotmail not recognizing a valid signin from another site.

Peter,

They may be forged as Hotmail (or Yahoo) addresses, but why? It's as easy for a spammer to get one of those addresses as you or I.

In fact I have a Yahoo address that I use for all web and product registration purposes. One thingg I really like about it is the spam filtering and bulk e-mail filtering features. Otherwise I'd have to sift through over 100 e-mails a day to get the 1 or 2 legitimate ones.

I'm going to have to look into a spam filter program for my regular email address which I access with Outlook Express now. Eventually the bastards find you and won't let up. At least I'm not getting several attachments of the Netsky virus per day like I was a couple months ago.

I get the feeling I'm going round in circles...

Can't get to MSN.com, comes up as a blank page, MSN.co.uk has a signin button at the top, clicked it and it just refreshed the page. Removed cookies, deleted temp files, tried again and....

*drumroll please*

No improvement! Althought there are now 40 emails waiting for me....

Edain -

In the US, I think I'd be ready to call MSN support by phone. I would expect that there's a UK number for them(?) If you can get into the MSN.co.uk site you may be able to find it there.

The other possibility is that your ISP has messed things up. Some of the newer server spam filters will automatically block an entire site that's sending a lot of spam, and with the ease of sending from (or emulating sending from) Hotmail, your ISP may have blocked your Hotmail link.

Since it's hotmail, you can probably assume that 39 of those 40 emails are spam anyway(?).

Thanks GUEST. I just assumed that his 19 May 04 - 04:54 PM reference to msn.co.uk was his normal connection, since he didn't mention trying msn.com.

John

I'm a Brit currently living in the states but my accountwas set up while I was home and so it autmatically defaults to the .co.uk website

Probably doesn't matter which one you call. You'll likely get some guy in India for tech help regardless.(?) Even if your account is in UK, you might still be able to key in the msn.com site to log/reset your Passport cookie. I do know that I get the button on that site.

There's the possibility that you have a Passport cookie but that it's gotten corrupted somehow. Might be worth looking for it and deleting the one you've got, and then trying the login - if you haven't already dumped your cookies several times over this.
