BS: New Short Thread Challenge!

19 May 04 - 03:12 PM (#1188718)
Subject: BS: New Short Thread Challenge!
From: Little Hawk

Okay. We all know by now that you can start a thread on any inane subject whatsoever...like "who will post last to this thread?" etc...and it will simply go on and on and on and on...possibly forever.

We know this. No need to continue beating a dead horse.

Here is a far more challenging test of your creative abilities. Start a thread that is so infernally uninteresting and totally dull that no one bothers adding to it and it ends at ONE post. Yours.

This isn't easy. Let's see if anyone can manage it. Good luck. Posting to this thread will not help you achieve this incredible coup, needless to say. No, you will have to start a new thread with a title that simply doesn't interest anybody at all. Like I said, good luck.

I COULD start a thread with the threat I would post ALL my sonnets, and mail them to anyone who posted on that thread. Think that would work?

Well, Little Hawk, I think my "Polka Concert in Belgium" thread a couple of years back was a successful earlier contender in a similar challenge.

Yeah. That was brilliant. I was thinking back fondly to that one when I started this one. It's not easy to post something that interests absolutely no one.

I've done it a few times.

Of course now that you've raised the challenge, eveyone will be looking for them and foil the attempt.

nd it ends at ONE post.

After how long, exactly? There's no "there" there by this definition.

That is surprising, freda! I think the Short Thread should meet these criteria: It should garner no response whatsoever in the first 24 hours or until it falls off the board into the limbo of past threads. It doesn't matter if it later resurfaces due to the activity of some pest like beardedbruce. It doesn't matter how long the initial post is that launches it. This suggests an interesting notion to me...if the original post were not only very boring, but also incredibly long and tedious to get through, I would think this would increase the chances of the thread not being responded to. It might help if it's written in Danish too. Or Swahili.

I resent being called a pest- I feel that if I am asked a question that I have information about, it is my duty as a good mudcatter to add to the discussion.

Yeah, yeah...I bet you would even stoop to searching through the hundreds and hundreds of expired threads just so you could find ONE that had only one post...and then you would post something to it in order to spoil it. In fact, I bet you are doing that right now, aren't you?

Dead thread?

You ride a dead horse.

Your not going to far.
Maybe as far as it takes to climb up on a dead horse and hopefully it hasn't been dead for a long period of time.
It would certainly take a person of courage to ride a dead horse that has been dead for a certain period of time.

OK, Little Hawk, the main problem is that you had the word "Challenge" in the title. Now really, you should know better than that! These folks won't pass up something so blatant.

What you needed to do was to have the title itself be so boring that no one ever takes even a look at it.

So here's the real challenge, folks-Start posting threads with really dreadful titles. I want to see if we can recognise them. Then of course the next step is not to be seduced into posting just to SAY it's a boring thread...I wonder if that's something we're capable of....:-)> (How do I look in a beard?)..xx..e

Yes, I saw that, but I think it's a violation of the rules. Pretty sneaky. Blatant manipulation. Stacking the deck. Stuffing the ballot box.

You're right, Amos, someone is likely to respond to anything, and it must speak to our innate curiosity and need to "exhibit" by putting up our own form of graffitti.

The MOABS is a gross offence against all common sense and self-discipline. As such, it is liable to go on indefinitely, I suppose. Thankfully one cannot say the same of really lousy TV shows or Presidents. They all finally go away if you wait long enough.

21 May 04 - 01:47 PM (#1190926)

That's just because they need to be profitable, while MOAB labors under no such constraint.

Subject: RE: BS: New Short Thread Challenge!

Excellent point. I have always asserted that a profit-based system eventually wrings the life out of everything, but the interesting counterpoint to that is: it also wrings the life out of things that DESERVE to cease existing! Hmmm.

21 May 04 - 02:00 PM (#1190936)
Subject: RE: BS: New Short Thread Challenge!
From: Amos

Profit-based methods also bring about the injection of life into things.

Examples abound -- new technologies, new products, Wheaties and Cocacola, Levis and BF Goodrich tires, etc. Given a distinct profit potential and someone will come up with cheap hydrogen.

From an examination of those threads that are on the Mudcat, and my postings, it is obvious that I have won the bet. Just look at what I have posted to.

From: Blackcatter

The only problem with this challenge is that there have been plenty of threads over the years that have died on the vine with only one post. The real trick is to figure out a way to find them.

By the way the BS: Joe Clones, Close This Thread! had died at this point too. The Clones didn't bother to follow through on their own idea.
