22 May 04 - 12:49 PM (#1191535) Subject: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Dave the Gnome I posted a thread about football with no prefix and it got relegated to BS. Yet all the threads I have contributed to about computers, pop-ups and disk crashes have stayed above the BS line? Do I need to set my cookie diferently or is some strange trans-atlantic virus that is corrupting my computer? It seems to be a very strange logic clause that sees computers as more to do with folk music than events where real people do sing real songs;-) Anyone come across it before? Cheers DtG |

22 May 04 - 12:58 PM (#1191540) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: GUEST,Jon As far as I know Dave there is an agreement here that computer stuff is not classed as BS here. Also, to the best I can make out, the BS only gives an initial indication for which forum (yes there are a few numbers if you view the source) the tread starts in. Other than that it's just a bit of text and Mudcat these days beneath the surface is more like more conventional (and more flexible) designs like even the Annexe. Jon |

22 May 04 - 12:58 PM (#1191541) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Amos I think tech stays above the salt; football, well, surely not. Folksingers don't play it and no folksongs of note are written about it,. There's a PhD thesis in there somewhere, I am sure. A |

22 May 04 - 02:20 PM (#1191580) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Malcolm Douglas This thread is a good example of the way people have started to abuse the "tech" and "folklore" classifications in order to get what is really BS put into a more prominent position. This isn't a technical forum or a football forum. By all means talk about all that stuff. Just don't complain if it ends up in the BS section (as most of the "tech" questions ought to, come to that). |

22 May 04 - 02:22 PM (#1191581) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Joe Offer Well, Dave, it's arbitrary, and I suppose I'm the one most guilty of arbitrariness. If your football thread generates some songs, then it can go back up top. We decided to leave tech stuff up top because we did. Some of the tech stuff has to do with Mudcat, and some does not. We didn't want to bother differentiating. With obits, they start up top, and then go down below if they don't end up having music information. I had been putting Mudcatter obits down below if they had sympathy and no music, but the other Mudcat Troika members outvoted me on that one and I have repented and reformed. It's a really nice thing that you Brits have some music with your sports (other than the Star-Spangled Banner), but I have to say that my sympathy is limited. In the future, even though it may pain you to do so, could I ask you to put a BS tag on your football threads unless you intend to have them discuss football music? There, there, don't take it too hard.... -Joe Offer- |

Or perhaps a real folk music fan.... Arrrggghhh - I have just realised! I am troll! Oh well. Back under the bridge with me. Cheers :D |

22 May 04 - 02:49 PM (#1191599) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Joe Offer But while we're talking about music and sports, I wanted to say that the Sacramento Song Circle has discussed volunteering to sing the National Anthem for the local minor league baseball team. We wondered what would happen if we san "The Internationale" instead of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Do they sing some sort of patriotic hymn before sporting events in the UK, or don't they engage in such silliness? -Joe Offer- Oh, and Dave.... This thread is going

Nah, we don't realy sing any such patriotic stuff, Joe. Might be nice if we did but all we get natonalistic or regional dogma:-( I was saying to Jeff that the internet should help eliminate such stuff and bring us some measure of peace. But what do you think will realy happen? Threads like this I guess;-) Cheers DtG |

23 May 04 - 06:38 AM (#1191917) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Mr Red as much as I detest football (even in scarlet) I feel that the terraces are possibly one of the last folk harbours. The chants, the songs, the victory dances - all throw-away and not very well documented. Just like the reaction to Cecil Sharp's interest in the song "Seeds of Love" - the hedgcutter couldn't understand why an hedducated gent was interested in wot folks do all the time but hain't in no books. Just the job for a folk collector - but it ain't me babe. |

23 May 04 - 06:51 PM (#1192272) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: McGrath of Harlow "Folksingers don't play it and no folksongs of note are written about it I think you must be talking about the local game played in the United States and known there by that name. Football chants at matches in England aren't the greatest songs, but they satisfy most of the criteria for being classed as folksongs. "Do they sing some sort of patriotic hymn before sporting events in the UK" Leaving aside God Save the Queen at International matches involving England (but not Scotland or Wales), there is "Abide with Me" at the English FA Cup Final. The words aren't exactly patriotic, and all the better (I think it was King George V suggested it, back in 1927): Abide with me; fast falls the eventide The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide When other helpers fail, and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O, abide with me. (Hell, now the threads down in the BS section, it's only right we should make a point of putting in songs...) |

23 May 04 - 09:43 PM (#1192351) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Rapparee Now, here's a football song! Rally sons of Notre Dame, Sing her glory, and sound her fame. Raise her Gold and Blue, And cheer with voices true, Rah! Rah! For Notre Dame. We will fight in every game Strong of heart and true to her name. We will ne'er forget her And we'll cheer her ever, Loyal to Notre Dame. Chorus Cheer, cheer for Old Notre Dame Wake up the echoes cheering her name, Send the volley cheer on high, Shake down the thunder from the sky, What tho the odds be great or small Old Notre Dame will win over all, While her loyal sons are marching Onward to Victory. |

24 May 04 - 09:57 AM (#1192688) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Rapparee Simply put, the most famous college song in the United States. Played whenever the University of Notre Dame du Lac's football team scores. Or any of the school's other sports teams, for that matter. It can really, really get on your nerves after a while. There IS this parody: Cheer, cheer for old Notre Dame, You take the the Notre, I'll take the Dame. Send the freshmen out for gin Don't let a sober sophomore in! We never stumble, we never fall We sober up on grain alcohol! While her loyal student body Lies drunk on the ballroom floor. This is THE University of Notre Dame. Knute Rockne. Ted Hesburgh. "Win one for the Gipper." That Notre Dame. I know too damned much about it, so don't get me started. |

24 May 04 - 10:00 AM (#1192692) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Amos There are scads of football songs, but they really aren't folk music. They were mostly written by the overpriveleged WASP males who dreamed up the whole stirring militant rahrah business in colleges small and large across the nation throughout the 19th century. must be an American football song, Rapaire? Who else would rhyme Notre Dame with name;-) Must be an English comment, I suppose -- who else would fault a Yank for not speaking with a French accent? A |

24 May 04 - 04:14 PM (#1193055) Subject: RE: Tech: My computer keeps generating BS From: Rapparee You bet it is! One of the best! And if the parody of the ND Victory March ain't folk, what is? It was composed by students (way, way, back -- I heard it in grade school) and used to annoy the Powers That Be. In the '80s the student body at Notre Dame used it as a protest song (about no alcoholic beverages on campus). It's irreverent, and isn't condoned by the school. Even the original was written by a student, but it's been "official" since about 1908. So...you footballers...here's some trivia: 1. Who's buried the the 50 yard line in ND stadium? 2. What's UNDER the ND stadium? |
