BS: Vote for next Mudcat auction shawl

24 May 04 - 02:03 PM (#1192933)
Subject: BS: Vote for next auction shawl
From: GUEST,MMario

I can't decide what pattern to base the next shawl I knit for the auction on.

Fnoedugen

Egeblad

Momme's Lysdug

a repeat of Stor Lydedug

Syvstjernen

or possibly Påfuglehalen as a full round shawl...

Any opinions?

I really don't think the pattern will matter. Is it a charity it will be auctioned for??

mudcat

possibly mudcat, and the Digital Tradition

Possibly mudcat, the digital tradition and the scholarship fund for the FSGW Getaway weekend.

depends on how interested people are...the more interest the more ways I split it)

sorry - should have specified mudcat auction (which is why I'm asking an opinion.)

They are all beautiful, MMario.

Do you have any patterns that are poncho-style, so you could put your head through?

Or are they strictly for pretty, as they say back in PA Dutch country?

My vote's for Egeblad or Påfuglehalen. That diacritical mark's hard to see. If forced, I'd probably choose the latter.

just promouncing any of those names is difficult enough...
let alone creating any of those patterns...all are gorgeous.
i would say do the one which requires the least difficult stitches..
the one with the simplets pattern and the most amount of area
which uses simple stitches...will this be knitting or crocheting?
what language are these pattern names from?
sounds like: egad, ladybug and flugelhorn!

if it was for the function of actually keeping warm,
it seems te design with the fewest holes to let cold
air in would do the job the best...like Påfuglehalen.

Egeblad. I'm not nuts about the big flower in the center, but I LOVE the leafy things. A nice variegated green yarn would look lovely. So would red/orange. Of course, if you make one like that, everyone else can just give up now and save themselves the headache of bidding.

Egeblad for my vote too......though they are lovely.

I think Fnoedugen is prettier, but the openwork at the border looks like it might be easily damaged in heavy use, at the full size you'll do it in. So, I vote for Egeblad, and I think we should hold Jeri up for every spare buck we can squeeze outta her!

I love the little people standing on them-- Mudcatters trying to sneak in and heist the auction or what!

I also vote for Egeblad, and I didn't even read these answers before I finished viewing (and re-viewing) the images to make up my mind. But don't put a hole in the middle, just double it up, or wear it offset at 3/4 from the center.

The holes actually will make the thing warmer. It's the "dead air" that is contained in the holes that help keep you warm. If you wear it folded over then you'll get the advantage of those holes and their warm air.

Do we also vote on the color? What do you have in mind?

keep talking people. Probably most of the ideas will show up at some point in time, (note to self. TRACE this thread)

Jeri - I have an "Autumn in New England" shawl on the needles - *grin* YOu mentioned it earlier and it was too nice an idea to pass up. A center back panal of Chevrons for the "mountains" - the main design will be leaf shapes - and the border is oak leaf lace. Psuedo-faroese design - a shaped triangle to better fit the shoulders.

Påfuglehalen in sage or terra cotta? hmmmmm - lace weight (very light but warm) or wool (heavier but also warm)? I'll start hunting out yarn..(might not be the NEXT one - but that's too good an offer for the 'cat for me to pass it up.) Påfuglehalen is actually a very easy design to knit - (the name means Peacock tail)

These designs are all knit and are Danish to the best of my knowledge.

- I've been having problems with crochet lately - (it was the glasses - I was stubborn and didn't get the bifocals I should have - now corrected) but will be getting back to it soon - have to finish up the "mystic" shawl I started last year.

MMario, it catches up with all of us. I have some new fancy lenses but I think they're harder to use than the standard format. Too many focal planes.

I have an applique/quilted thing I was working on with the kids, just for demonstration purposes. I have to pull it out and finish it. Maybe we can let them do something like that this summer and donate half the proceeds to Mudcat (they'll want something for their labors!)

MMario, are you targeting me, personally? Fine with me!

At NEFFA, there was a booth where someone was selling crocheted bead bracelets and necklaces. I got home and just had to try it, despite the fact I don't know how to crochet. I found information on the Internet, bought a crochet hook of the appropriate size (teeny) and began. It lasted until I nearly had the 2nd row finished. (That'd be the 9th bead.) BAH! I'd need a pair of those glasses doctors use when they do microsurgery, but regular bead weaving is masochistic enough for me, thank you. Want a teeny crochet hook? It's suitable for crocheting beads or making little afghans for ladybugs out of spider webs.

All the Designs are beautiful as is Your work but it's Syvstjernen for me. In a Heather hue with a touch of Moss Green.

Stunning, and astonishing, work! They truly are all lovely but I'd choose either the first (Fnoe.) or the last one (Paf.). As it makes me sweat just thinking about holding any kind of a needle, sewing or knitting or crocheting, that anyone could execute something like this just blows me away. Beautiful....

A work in progress 'Autumn in New England' - it will be a psuedo-faroese (shaped triangle) - the center panel will have mountain motifs - the side panels cascades of leaves - the edging is an oak leaf lace.

Also on the needles (no picture yet) -Påfuglehalen in green and grey-green

And the deep green "mystic" shawl from last year which I'll be working on this weekend.

I vote for Pfugelhalen, too, elegant and simple. Of course, I like them ALL. And you're right about the faroese style fitting better.

If you would like, there is a lady in Indiana - look up on google under "bugknits" who knits incredibly tiny things - you could cover a pair of stockings with a dime!

I had to share this one....

Not really.
You've been taunting me with this, teasing me. I few minutes ago, I noticed a FedEx bag suspended from my mailbox. I was expecting something else, but when I saw the size of the box, I knew it wasn't that. When I read the return address, I knew...

I've been the victim of a drive-by shawling. He sent me the "Autumn in New England" shawl.

It's even more beautiful than the pictures (links above) show. You can't see how it drapes, and you can't feel the light, bright warmth. I also know each crocheted stich was made by the hands of a friend.

Thank, and love,
Jeri

Lucki Jeri! Drive by shawlings are always very nice when they happen!

So what is next in the works, our nimble-fingered-time-traveler?

Last week a friend of mine moved, and she set some boxes of things aside that were to go to a local thrift store. I rescued a lovely little doily suspended in a coated metal ring so it can be hung on the wall. It's in my bathroom--a nice memento of a friend who has moved three states away. I had to wash it carefully--it was brownish from the many smoking years it had been exposed to (she finally quit!), but I managed to restore it to a delicate perfectly white piece. Describe it? Well, if you take the pattern Fnoedugen and take off all but the middle section after the diamond shapes and use only about half of the petals and add a few tiny flowers, you have it. Sort of.

It makes a wonderful piece of personal art, and might be a great auction idea for around christmas time.

Allison, this was the perfect day for the shawl to arrive.
You know, as bummed as I can get about humanity in general, somebody goes and does something like this, and it blows my bad mood all to hell.

I need revenge, and I SHALL HAVE IT! Be warned, MMario. Here is a subtle hint:

The shawl-maker's work is more than it seems;
The yarn is the stuff of wishes and dreams.
There's compassion and love in each delicate strand,
Touched by the shawl-maker's hand.

MMario, those patterns and those shawls you have made are lovely. You, sir, are a man who loves beauty. So cool to be able to produce it.

Have you ever entertained the thought of knitting with qiviut? (Note no 'u') "Qiviut is the warmest, lightest wool in the world and can be made into incomparably soft garments that can be worn next to the skin. So soft you won't believe it!" I'm quoting from a site because it says it better than I can.

Qiviut is the underwool from a muskox and its texture, weight and warmth are mindblowing. It's like holding a warm cloud.

I'm afraid it is also expensive but one could do a little shopping.

Qiviut? I was visiting a friend last weekend and she is a knitter. She brought out a small rectangular piece....a very short scarf kind of thing. She explained that it was made of qiviut, what that was and then wrapped it around my neck. I think Ebbie said it perfectly....it's like a warm cloud...SOOOOOOOOOOO soft and not even a tiny bit itchy.
